Due To Arrive 06/05/10
The Gosh! Authority 28/04/10
The volcano has not beaten us. Not only do we have last week’s comics safe and sound and on the shelves, we’ve also got this week’s comics here on time making for a great big bumper edition of How Late?! So unless something else strange and catastrophic happens, everything should be relatively back to normal from here on.
There were quite a few things worth waiting for in those waylaid boxes like Dan Clowes’ new graphic novel Wilson for starters. I’ve not read it yet but everything I’ve heard says it’s most definitely a good’un which is just as well because we’ve got the bloke responsible for it signing here next month. Over at the signing post you can see some preview panels, reviews, etc.Dan Nadel follows up his groundbreaking Art Out of Time with Art In Time: Unknown Comic Book Adventures 1940 – 1980 HC. The Comics Journal compares the two in typical Comic Journal detail so head that way and I’ll spare you the hurriedly abridged version.
Then there’s Jeffrey Brown’s latest Undeleted Scenes which is a huge compendium of his shorter works. You will have seen most of it before (there are bits from Minisulk, Every Girl is the End of the World for Me, Feeble Attempts, various anthologies, etc) but there are also dozens of pages of brand new stuff so it’s kind of a best-of and it kind of isn’t. Brown talks about the book and the nature of autobiography in this interview here. Preview pages there too.
In comics we’ve got Captain America: Who Won’t Wield the Shield (preview) a special comedic one-shot by Matt Fraction, Brian Miguel Bendis, Jason Aaron, Stuart Moore, and Brendan McCarthy that actually made a Comic Book Resources reviewer laugh. “It’s been a while, good sir, but I’m happy to say that Who Won’t Wield the Shield is an irreverent and gloriously inane book that is actually funny,” they said. IGN were equally impressed.Garth Ennis and Jacen Burrows’ Crossed gets collected in trade paperback this week as the gruesome reigns are handed over to David Lapham (Stray Bullets) for a brand new series. Crossed: Family Values is a six-parter illustrated by Javier Barreno which Comics Bulletin reckons has everything the original had and a considerable lot more. Here’s their review and here’s a preview too.
The latest character to join DC’s First Wave pulp universe is The Spirit and you can catch the first glimpse of it this week in The Spirit #1. As with previous Spirit comics the joy of the book lies in the art so it’s little wonder they got Bill Siekiewicz on board along with Moritart. Written by Mark Schultz and Denny O’Neil, this review reckons the series has more to do with Frank Miller’s cinematic Spirit than Will Eisner’s original blue-suited character. CbR have a review of it too.Fan-favourite Warren Ellis series DV8 is back with an eight-parter written by the Eisner-nominated Brian Wood (DMZ) and illustrated by up-and-comer Rebekah Isaacs (Drafted, Ms Marvel). “My DV8 is a lot like my Demo and like Local and probably a little like Supermarket - hitting themes of identity and friendships, family and loss. It's a very character-driven book, eight characters each getting the spotlight in this eight-issue series. On top of that, I bring a lot of the stuff I've been researching for Northlanders into the mix, the clash of old vs. new and history and paganism and myth,” says Wood in an interview with CbR. Followers of the original Warren Ellis series will no doubt want to see what Woods does with the morally bankrupt teens; Geeks of Doom already have.
Alan Moore’s Dodgem Logic #3 has landed and if I attempted to sum up what’s in the thing myself you’d all be missing out on this chunk of amusing text:
While the popular primates that we promised you last issue have receded back into the mist, we’ve tried hard to alleviate your sense of cheated rage and disappointment by enlisting laugh-along Luddites-for-Literature supremo Robin Ince to smooth the gentle gradient of your furrowed brow. We also tracked down Josie Long through credit-card transactions in her brave but ultimately doomed Shawshank Redemption bid for freedom, so she’s back with us and doing what she likes best, if that’s being handcuffed to a radiator.
As for the thick wedge of extra pages that you’re paying through the nose for in this bumper issue, they contain a rare compendium of delights. We’ve got confessions of calamitous careers in the constabulary, step-by-step instructions for do-it-yourself diabolism and the rigorous recriminatory ruminations of a rogue town planner. We’ve got divine decadence and sultry San Francisco nights along with the exploits of troubled everyman Johnny Viable, some glamorous graffiti, and a tantalising T-shirt transfer from the crayon box of Dodgem Logic’s vendor of voluptuousness Melinda Gebbie.
You can see the Gebbie t-shirt transfer over at Bleeding Cool. There’s also a weird wraparound fairground cover by the Bearded One himself. It’s on the Gosh! counter right now. You can’t miss it.
Only a couple of bits to go and then you’re dismissed. The latest Lucky Luke has arrived. X-Factor #204 (a Second Coming Revelations tie-in) and X-Men Legacy #235 (Second Coming: Chapter Four) also arrived in the batch of delayed comics. We’ve still got copies but Marvel has sold out of them completely and is doing a second printing. Probably best to grab them now if you fancy it – we won’t be able to get any more of the first print.
And finally, this week’s a Previews week but there was a cock-up at the warehouse which means that we didn’t receive any Marvel Previews. So what we’re gonna do is sell the regular Previews minus the cost of the Marvel Previews. We should have the Marvel one next week so you can pick up the missing bit then.
And that’s your lot. Volcano or no volcano, they’ll be on the shelf tomorrow.
-- Hayley

The Gosh! Authority 21/04/10
Greetings, Gosh fans, or as they say in Iceland, “Komdu sæll!” Now you must be aware, of course, of the volcanic ash currently drifting through our upper atmosphere, grounding all flights in and out of the UK (not to mention many of our Friends on the Continent). Unfortunately, as Hayley informed you earlier in the week, this means there will be no new comics shipping to us this week. We’ll let you know as soon as we have any more information on when titles might be arriving, but we’re looking down the barrel of some serious delays here. Even though flights have now resumed, the backlog of cargo will take some clearing, and alas, periodicals aren’t the highest priority. Fingers crossed for next week, but stay tuned for updates.
Meanwhile, we’d like you to think of this not as the Volcanic Death Cloud, but rather more as the Ashen Cloud of Opportunity. Yes, there’s not much new coming through the door, but there are plenty of great recent books out on our shelves, and now’s your chance to give ‘em a try!First up, let’s go down the road of tights’n’capes, kicking off with one of the best recent Marvel titles we’ve had in: Spider-Man Fever #1 (AKA Brendan McCarthy’s Dr Strange: Fever, guest starring Spider-Man). It’s no secret that Brendan McCarthy is a master of surrealist narrative, and so a perfect fit for the weird astral worlds of Dr Strange. In this first issue, the good Doctor inadvertently unleashes an invasion of spider-demons, who nab the soul of Spider-Man for their greedy king. “A human soul? Prepare it immediately. I shall have it with custard!”
Marvel Zombies 5 started last week, and is much better than you might think. The MZ series have now basically become vehicles for D-list characters, including Machine Man, in full flesh-hating Nextwave mode, and have really regained the humour that made the first mini-series so much fun. This series promises to jump through different times in the Marvel Universe, starting here with the Old West, and next issue moving to the post-War of the Worlds Killraven era.Geoff Johns’ new Flash series started last week, and we still have a limited number of copies on the shelf. Johns’ previous work in the Flash-verse remains a high-watermark for the title, and he’s off to a good start with this issue, helped along ably by the art of Francis Manapul, who actually got really good sometime in the last few years while I wasn’t looking. Lovely colouring to boot.
If you’re more of a Marvel kinda reader, might I recommend the X-Men Second Coming crossover. We’ve still got the first three chapters, and it’s the most focused X-story I’ve seen in quite some time. Reminiscent of the good old Mutant Massacre days, it’s primarily just a big, fun action story, interspersed with soapy character beats. And really, what more do you want from the X-Men?
Finally, a great segue title, the Strange Tales HC. It’s the Marvel heroes as imagined by some of the top indie creators working today. Talents include Paul Pope, Michael Kupperman, Peter Bagge, James Kochalka, Jason, Dash Shaw, Stan Sakai, Tony Millionaire, Jhonen Vasquez, Jeffrey Brown and many more! My favourite from the whole book? …AND CALL MY LOVER MODOK! by Nick Bertozzi. It’s as mental as it sounds. “Oh Modie…don’t think about killing—just KISSING.”Meanwhile, have you seen McSweeney’s #33? It’s a whacking great San Franciscan newspaper, with everything you might expect from the weekend papers. And in amongst those supplements, including articles and stories from the likes of Junot Diaz, Michael Chabon, Stephen King, Roddy Doyle and more, is an amazing 16-page comics paper. It’s a veritable who’s who of great talent: Art Spiegelman, Chris Ware, Dan Clowes, Jessica Abel, Adrian Tomine, Alison Bechdel & Gabrielle Bell, to name a few. At £11.50 this thing is a snap, offering amazing value for money. I guarantee you’ll be reading your way through this for some time to come.
Afrodisiac, Brian Maruca & Jim Rugg’s love letter to blaxploitation comics. The book is an amazingly realised anthology of snippets from throughout the fictional career of the titular character, adopting all manner of different styles to show his depiction throughout the years. Rather than being a collection of full stories, it’s a make-believe archive of snapshots, as though Chip Kidd had fallen in love with a comics version of Shaft and wanted to show you his favourite splash pages, covers, pieces of ephemera and so on. Pure genius.
Speaking of genius, the first volume of Torpedo is still available, featuring the work of none other than Alex Toth, as well as the always impressive Jordi Bernet. Written by Enrique Sanchez Abuli, Torpedo is one of comics’ great bastards. A precursor to and indelible influence on the crime comics of Frank Miller, Brian Azzarello and others, Torpedo is still a blackly humourous treat with jaw-dropping art.
We’ve had two new bookplate editions in store in the last month or so: first up was the new collection of Phonogram by Kieron Gillen & Jamie McKelvie, a highly enjoyable collection of short stories meditating on love, sex, magic and music. While it’s enhanced by a reading of the first collection, this volume can be enjoyed on its own, so don’t be afraid to dip your toes (eyes?) into one of the great critical successes the UK has produced this past year. Our second recent bookplate is the lush, exciting collaboration by Ben Haggarty & Adam Brockbank, Mezolith. On the one hand it’s a high-falutin’ consideration of the power of stories and the manner in which they shape our lives, comparable to the best bits of Sandman, and on the other it’s also a collection of blood-chilling, exciting adventures: all witches, spears and swan-ladies. Not badly drawn, either, if I may massively understate.
Am I done? Am I heck. There’s more!
How about Mysterious the Unfathomable? The critically lauded but sadly low-selling series is now available in one handy collection. Jeff Parker and Tom Fowler have produced a little gem in this story of a jaded, slightly morally questionable magician and his good-natured sidekick, as they battle a rogues gallery ranging from a coven of naked witches, to a demonic Dr Seuss. It’s a fun treat, and completely unique. And there’s Witchfinder, the newest addition to the Hellboy universe. Written by Mike Mignola and featuring lovely art by up and comer Ben Stenbeck, Witchfinder sees occasional flashback guest star Sir Edward Grey take centre stage in this tale of Victorian horror. Not only does the story stand well on its own, but it also offers important background to the world of Hellboy and the BPRD. The collection also features two short stories and a sketchbook section at the back.
Don’t forget Black Blizzard, Yoshihiro Tatsumi’s pulpy tale of two prisoners handcuffed together and on the run in a snow storm. Almost an antidote to the considered humanism of Tatsumi’s other works currently available in English, this is pure genre schlock, and a great deal of fun for that.
Did you pick up Turf #1? We’ve still got copies of Jonathan Ross’ sell-out, big-time comics debut, with lovely art by Tommy Lee Edwards. It’s 1920’s gangsters vs vampires vs aliens, and it promises to be some goofy fun as it develops. It’s also only £2.20 for a solid, enjoyable read, so well worth checking out.
Something else that came out a while back that we’ve still got some copies of is the Beasts of Burden mini-series by Evan Dorkin and Jill Thompson. Each issue is a stand-alone story of the heroic dogs (and occasional cat) of Burden Hill, a small American town beset by all manner of supernatural beasties. They’re great stories, filled with humour, horror and drama. Grab ‘em now while we still have some left.If you fancy trying out some older issues, then don’t forget that we have thousands of back issues downstairs, many of which are £1 or less. An inexpensive way to try out new things.
And there’s plenty more, like Batman and Robin Volume 1 Deluxe Hardcover by Grant Morrison/Frank Quitely, Other Lives HC by Pete Bagge, Peter Milligan's Bronx Kill HC, and Excalibur Visionaries: Warren Ellis TP, all of which came out in the last fortnight or so. Honestly, if you’re suffering from withdrawal this week, do feel free to pop on in and check out the shelves. We’re always happy to give you suggestions based on what you’d normally read, or recommend things a little out of the ordinary if you’d like to take a chance. Otherwise, keep watching the skies, and we’ll let you know as soon as we find out when the next new shipment is due to arrive.
Alex Fitch of Panel Borders fame is chairing a couple of great panels at this year's Sci-Fi London. On Saturday the 1st of May you can see Dez Skinn, Dan Abnett, Gary Erskine, John Freeman, and Simon Furman discuss the history of Marvel UK, and on the following Monday you can catch Woodrow Phoenix, Howard Webster, and Cyriak Harris talking comics and film. All details are over at the Sci-Fi London website.
Last bit of news and then we're off: the great Gene Colan (Howard the Duck) has broken his shoulder and can't work for the next three months (at least!). Because it's America there'll be a pile of medical bills to take care of and he needs our help. Over at Clifford Meth's blog you'll find all the details on the benefit auction which includes work by Mike Deodato, Harlan Ellison, Mark Evanier, Mike Henderson, Stan Lee, “Handsome Dick” Manitoba, Bill Messner-Loebs, Tom Palmer, Mike Pascale, Paul Ryan, Joe Rubenstein, Bill Sienkiewicz, Walter Simonson, Marv Wolfman and more.Bæbæ! (As they say in Volcanic Doomland)
Andrew.
Armageddon
Due to VOLCANIC ASH (!) there will be NO COMICS this week because they're stuck in the States just like people. We're hoping to see them next week, volcano gods permitting.

The Gosh! Authority 14/04/10
Greetings on this disappointingly dreary day! We’d all be very happy with it if it was February but our standards have gone up considerably since then, fickle creatures that we are. As usual we’ve got some stuff that’ll make it better so here goes:
Dash Shaw’s sci-fi comedy webcomic BodyWorld is now out in a rather handsome hardcover. He originally started the thing on his website after becoming impatient with the world of book publishing – sending out endless copies of his then unpublished comic and hearing nothing back. It was a year between Fantagraphics agreeing to release Bottomless Belly Button (the book that would make Dash Shaw, Dash “Bottomless Belly Button” Shaw) and the book actually seeing print, so in the meantime he busied himself with this. Publishers Weekly call it “a raging torrent of ideas, characters, and plot” and interview the man responsible for it here. There are two reviews floating about and some pictures of the book hot off the press over at Shaw’s website. The Comics of Chris Ware: Drawing is a Way of Thinking is a collection of essays by scholars none of whom I’ve ever heard of but they’re all very impressive academic types whose essays on other things have appeared in very impressive academic places. Contributor Jeet Heer has put a list of contents up on Comics Comics along with a fair chunk of his own bit in the book so head that way for a taster. What a convenient excuse this is to remind you all of our upcoming Chris Ware and Dan Clowes signing in May! It’s kind of a big deal.
The ever-reliable comics historian Craig Yoe has been at it again and this time he’s dug up Jetta, the cute space girl from the ‘60s by famous Archie artist Don DeCarlo. It’s a gorgeous full-colour hardback containing all three issues of the rare short-lived series. DeCarlo was both a fan and a master of pin-up art so Yoe has also rounded up thirty-seven of the best artists around to do a Jetta pin-up; a DeCarlo homage: Alan Gutierrez, Andrew Pepoy, Becky Dreistadt, Ben Tan, Bill Morrison, Colleen Coover, Clizia Gussoni, Craig McCracken, Danny Hellman, David Reddick, Dominic Marco, Fabrizio Pasini, Jay Stephens, Jenny Lerew, Joakim Gunnarsson, Hedvig Häggman-Sund, Justin Ridge, Kali Fontecchio, Katie Rice, Leslie & Anna Cabarga, Luke McDonnell, Mark Frauenfelder, Mike Maihack, Molly Crabapple, Paul Guinan, Robert Ullman, Ryan Hungerford, Scott Tolleson, Stephanie Gladden, Stephen Silver, The Savanella Sisters, Tracy Mark Lee, and even Gosh! Favourites Brandon Ragnar and Bill Presing. Presing blogs about it here and gives you some images too, while Frauenfelder has some more over at Boing Boing.
For the second week running we’ve got something by Pete Bagge (Hate) on the new shelf:
Other Lives HC has three certified geeks in it – a self-loathing journalist, a conspiracy theorist, and an unemployed gamer – and it looks like it’ll be very funny. The Vertigo blog has a few preview pages but these guys have more than that. Unfortunately they’ve turned it into one of those drag-the-corner-of-the-page-across-the-screen deals that I hate so much which is why I didn’t link to them first.
Then we’ve got Warren Ellis’ most notable early Marvel work collected in a spruced up Excalibur Visionaries trade paperback. Ellis began writing the series in 1994 after Scott Lobdell’s fill-in months following the departure of Chris Claremont and Alan Davis, and famously helped the series regain its sense of humour after Lobdell’s widely considered “depressing” run in which several characters were grimly dispatched. This trade doesn’t collect all of Ellis’ Excalibur run but a fairly hefty chunk of the beginning of it.In comics this week we’ve got the Siege: Loki One-Shot by Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie. “Siege is such a tight four issue storyline that a lot of the character's motivations are touched on softly. It's not a book where people sit down and talk about their motivations for pages. This is a chance to explore Siege's subtleties. So there's room to take a look and find out what it is that Loki is really up to, and that's something I totally want to write about," says Gillen in an interview about the trickster god. Incidentally, if you like what these guys do be sure you grab a signed Phonogram bookplate edition soon! They won’t last long I can assure you.
Blackest Night is done and dusted but its effects will be felt for years to come in the DC Universe so you better know what’s what. Brightest Day #0 is out this week and sets the stage for the upcoming biweekly series by Geoff Johns who talks about it here. “It's definitely an epic, year-long story.”Star Wars artist Lucas Marangon’s Hellcyon #1 is the first of a four-part creator-owned project; a sci-fi series about a brutal place called Halcyon on the verge of a civil war. “When I was a kid I always felt attracted to science fiction because of the form: the new worlds, the societies of the future, the technology. As I grew up I also discovered the content: the depth, the thematic variety, the complexity and the social role of the good science fiction. As John W. Campbell once said: 'Science fiction should tell us what we don't want to know.'" More of that in his interview with CbR.
Other than that we’ve got the Savage Axe of Ares, a black-and-white story set in the ancient days of Ares, heavily inspired by the old Conan stories. Over at Marvel John Barber talks about influences for the one-shot. There’s four stories all up including one written and illustrated by the great Ted McKeever. CbR have a preview. Then there’s the highly anticipated launch of the Man of Bronze’s very own series which spins off Brian Azzarello’s pulpy First Wave. Doc Savage #1 is written by novelist Paul Malmont and illustrated by Howard Porter (Magog). Comic Book Resources interviewed him back in February and he sounds like he knows his stuff.
And that’s about it. Apart from Jeff Parker (Mysterius the Unfathomable) and Humberto Ramos’ (Spectacular Spider-Man) World War Hulks: Hulked Out Heroes #1, of course. Preview here.

The Gosh! Authority 08/04/10
Right then. Another post snuck in over the week which I’ll duly point out: The Mezolith Gosh! Exclusive Bookplate Edition Hardcover. Yep, we gone done it again. If you’ve not heard of Mezolith before Andrew describes it thusly:
“At its heart, Mezolith is about stories... Through the eyes of Poika, a boy of the cusp of manhood, we see the harsh life of the Kansa, a Mezolithic tribe who reside on the Western shores of the North Sea Basin, and hear the folk tales and myths that shape their understanding of the world.”
It looks lovely and if you head over to the Bookplate Edition post you’ll see pages some pages from it too. Only 200 of ‘em about so grab one soon if it takes your fancy. Those of you holding off on Grant Morrison’s Batman & Robin so as to get the collection instead – this is your week. Batman & Robin Deluxe Hardcover Volume 1: Batman Reborn has landed. It collects the first six issues of the series so you’ll be getting three illustrated by Frank Quitely and another three by Philip Tan. I linked to a Morrison interview back when issue #1 was imminent so you can head back that way for a refresher.
Also in this week’s hardcover swag is the first volume of Viking, a series described as a crime book for the 9th century. In an interview with CbR writer Ivan Brandon says of the first book...
“Remember Christopher Moltisanti trying to get ‘made’ in The Sopranos? Well, the first arc of Viking is about two young criminal brothers and the levels they'll go to make their way up the criminal food chain. And more importantly, the mistakes they make and the consequences of being overzealous. But you know, all of the above with spears instead of bullets.”
Nic Klein’s art is cracking and you’ll see some pages of it in amongst Brandon’s interview.
Then there’s Witchfinder: In the Service of Angels TP which is all about Ed Grey, a character Mignola says is set to become very important in the Hellboy series. This was Mignola’s “ham-handed, very American attempt” at pulling off English Victorian supernatural literature, something he’s always been a huge fan of.“It's fun, it's got seances, it's got Jack-the-Ripper-like murders, it's got cops in those helmets with the little bull's-eye lanterns running around through gas-lit alleys. It's probably informed more by old movies about that kind of stuff. Even the color treatment has almost a black-and-white feel to it. I wanted something that was so atmospheric and touched on all the peculiarities of Victorian-era stuff because there isn't a plan to do another one of these Ed Grey stories in London, so I wanted to make sure we got all that stuff, all that feel, clearly established as an Englishman in London.”
More of that interview and funny American spellings this way.
The other notable trade this week is the fifth Gødland collection, Far Beyond the Bang. It begins with #25 – the beginning of the final year of the series by Joe Casey and Tom Scioli. Also by Casey is Avengers: The Origin #1, the first of a five-part miniseries that promises to reveal previously untold details of their historic meeting. Here’s a preview of Phil Noto’s pages.Somewhere next to that on the new shelf will be New Avengers: Luke Cage #1 (of 3) by John Arcudi and Eric Canete, set in the seedier side of the Marvel Universe. Arcudi talks about it here, there’s a review here, and a preview too.
In other comics we’ll see the debut of Jonathan Ross’ and Tommy Lee Edwards’ Turf. It’s a hard boiled crime thriller set in Prohibition-era New York only there’s vampires and aliens added to the usual mix of booze, broads and bullets. You can see Ross yapping about it here, and a preview of it there.
From Pete Bagge you’ll get a brand new Hate Annual (that’s #8 if you’re counting, and not in the least bit annual). It’s got twenty brand new Buddy Bradley pages plus a motley collection of stuff from all over. CbR have a preview and detail its innards.
Marvel’s helpfully titled S.H.I.E.L.D. also debuts, which is not to be confused with DC’s Shield, an entirely other thing obviously. America didn’t have a Bank Holiday Monday so they got their comics on time, the result being a wealth of reviews all over the internet already. This one says “after only one issue I'm already comfortable calling S.H.I.E.L.D. the boldest, most creative and exciting Marvel comic on the stands.” So there you go. Writer Jonathan Hickman (interviewed by Newsarama) said:“It primarily takes place in the 1950s, but it’s not that kind of story – it’s not a nostalgic fifties story. If anything, all the nostalgic bits are way back in time – the Renaissance, Egypt, Ancient Rome, and the Middle East at its intellectual height; Ancient China as well.
Time hopping is kind of an understatement – but the narrative is really tight. We’re telling the stories of a lot of different characters – really important men in the history of the world. We’re bringing them into the Marvel Universe and sprinkling our Jack Kirby/Stan Lee fairy dust over them and making it bigger.”
Preview pages to be found there as well.
And finally, the highly anticipated Brendan McCarthy Spider-Man/Dr Strange miniseries Fever has arrived. Comics Alliance have an exclusive preview of it here which looks completely brilliant and a bit mental too. McCarthy says he’s paying homage to Steve Ditko while trying not to be too slavish about it. He talks more about it on his website. (And hey! Look! A review!)Last bit of news and then I’m off: There’s a Jonah Hex illustrated by Darwyn Cooke in the post. Exciting, no?

Mezolith Bookplate Edition - Exclusive to Gosh!
Hot on the heels of our Phonogram Bookplate Edition, we’re pleased as punch to have Ben Haggarty and Adam Brockbank work with us to produce a Bookplate Edition of their excellent new book, Mezolith.
Originally serialised in the sadly defunct DFC, a weekly, subscription-only title that produced a wealth of great, kid-friendly material in all-too short a time, the title is among the first wave of titles in the newly launched DFC Library line (alongside Dave Shelton’s Good Dog, Bad Dog and Kate Brown’s Spider Moon).
At its heart, Mezolith is about stories; no surprise given that Haggarty is a professional storyteller by trade. Through the eyes of Poika, a boy of the cusp of manhood, we see the harsh life of the Kansa, a Mezolithic tribe who reside on the Western shores of the North Sea Basin, and hear the folk tales and myths that shape their understanding of the world.
Haggarty’s work is matched superbly by the lush realism of artist Brockbank, showcased in the album-sized format of the book. Brockbank, a production designer on, among many other things, the Harry Potter films, does an amazing job of not only conveying the hardships of Poika and his tribe, but also the fantastic, mythical aspects of the story. From black-eyed swan maidens, to ravening demonic babies, Brockbank creates a seamless visual world where the transition from eerie folk tale to brutal reality feels completely natural.
The Gosh-exclusive Mezolith Bookplate Edition is limited to 200 copies, featuring a numbered illustrative plate signed by the writer and the artist. At the standard retail price of £9.99, this is a wonderful opportunity to see two master storytellers at work. If you'd like to reserve one or arrange a mail order, drop us a line at info@goshlondon.com.
