The Gosh! Authority 28/01/09

Hello! Me again, here with your weekly infodump. There’s bad news, good news, and news of upcoming projects in this ‘ere post. I even tell you what to do on your weekend. Disappointingly, I don’t get to mention Bong Dazo. So I’ll just do it there for fun.

On the shelves this week is the newest and final Bone colour edition Crown of Horns which sees Jeff Smith’s Bone saga takes its darkest turn yet. If you’ve not had a look at these Scholastic editions (available in soft and hardcover) you’re in for a treat. Apparently it took Steve Hamaker five years to colour all nine volumes and from the looks of things it was well worth it. You can see some of his lovely work over at the Boneville site.

Neil Gaiman’s Coraline has been adapted into a stop-motion feature film by the astonishingly talented Henry Selick (he of Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach fame) and this week we’ve got the book to tell you all about it! Stephen Jones, a friend of Gaiman’s and winner of dozens of fiction awards, compiles hundreds of rare and exclusive tidbits including photographs (family and otherwise), illustrations, production designs, concept drawings, and interviews with the cast and crew. It even features a foreword by Scary Trousers himself, who recently said on his blog that this was the first Coraline trailer that he really liked. The film’s out in the States next month, but the UK has to wait until May.

Fan-favourite Jonathan Hickman’s (The Nightly News, Pax Romana, A Red Mass From Mars) Transhuman is collected in its first trade paperback this week. It’s been said by fans that ‘if the next watershed-type comic - the next Watchmen or Dark Knight - is going to come from anyone it’ll be Jonathan Hickman’. This trade collects issues #1-#4 of the series about superhuman genetic engineering, the first of which was reviewed by Valerie D’Orazio (of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger) on her blog back in 2008. And she rather liked it.

If you’ve been following Garth Ennis’ Battlefields: Night Witches you’ll be pleased to know his next one’s in the post. Dear Billy #1 is a three-issue mini-series about wartime and such, but I’ll let Ennis himself tell you all about that, before you pop over here for a preview.

Lots of DC news this week! Showcase Presents House of Mystery Volume 3 gives you another dollop of classic horror from the likes of Jack Oleck, Steve Skeates, Sheldon Mayer, Michael Fleisher, Alex Niño, Ruben Yandoc, Nestor Redondo, Gerry Talaoc and Bernie Wrightson. Then Final Crisis concludes in issue #7 of the Grant Morrison epic! You may have heard that this one’s not illustrated by J. G. Jones like the rest of the series, but Doug Mahnke (Batman) instead. See what you think of his take on the series in this ‘ere preview. Speaking of Grant Morrison, Flash: Emergency Stop came out in trade-paperback last week (another of those I should have mentioned at the time and didn’t) which collects his and Mark Millar’s (Civil War) entire Flash run, with art by Paul Ryan and John Nyberg. It’s a 1990s fast-paced epic, don’t you know. You have to say epic if it’s Morrison, according to the internet.

Also out in trade-paperback is Ed Brubaker and Doug Mahnke’s (that bloke again) Batman: The Man Who Laughs, telling the story of Batman’s very first encounter with the villainous Joker. It’s reviewed here by Comics Bulletin.

So that’s what’s out and here’s what’s coming: DC Comics have announced the creative teams for the Origins and Omens stories in February. I was going to copy it from their email and stick it up here, but as usual Newsarama got there first.

Other things of interest on the web include Alex Fitch’s Panel Borders which is broadcast as part of the show Strip! on Resonance 104.4 FM. This month Alex spoke to artist and writer Marc Ellerby, who’s done a lot of autobiographical small press stuff as well as a back-up strip for the latest issue of Kieron Gillen’s Phonogram. You can hear the entire extended podcast here and if you like the sound of him you can go see his stuff in an exhibition called Drawn! which is on until the 8th of February. There are loads of people involved, as well as a couple of little known Hergé illustrations. (Speaking of which, anyone seen this?) Alex also had a chat with my favourite Raymond Briggs (as opposed to the other one, obviously. What a stupid thing to say.) which can be heard here. Incidentally, if you’ve not read Gentleman Jim it was re-released a while back and we’ve got copies in the shop. It’s heartbreakingly lovely and very, very funny.

Then if you’re after something small pressy, head over to the Alternative Press Fair for comics, zines, and delightful misc on Sunday the 1st of February (that’s this weekend, folks) at the St. Aloysius Social Club. It promises to ‘bring together the worlds of alternative comics, zines, self-produced art-books, poetry and DIY/punk culture for one amazing day, like a great colourful blancmange that you can’t eat.’

Our own Will Bingley interviewed Adrian Tomine in the lead-up to his upcoming visit, and the results can be seen here on Don’t Panic! Remember to stop by the shop on Tuesday the 3rd of February from 12:30pm to 2pm to get your books signed by the man himself.

And finally, we’re sorry to say it’s finally happened – Woolworths has gone belly-up taking their pick n mix with them, a two minute tube ride costs a year’s wages and the price of comics has gone up. We’ll be sure to have a proper list of new prices up by next week’s post, scout’s honour.

But not to end on a downer, we’ve got an A3-ish print of the lovely Jill Thompson Magic Trixie artwork (seen here) to give away! We had it on our wall for a bit but need the space for something else. If you’d like it for your wall send an email to info@goshlondon.com telling us exactly why you would be the perfect recipient. You’ve got until Sunday to come up with a good reason, so get writin’!

Goodbye!
-- Hayley, who can’t say ‘Goodbye!’ without thinking of Laurel & Hardy.

The Gosh! Authority 21/01/09

If Chris Ware has taught us specky gits anything it’s that the good bits are in the tiny details. But Charles M. Schulz was doing it all along.

When Schroeder pounded on his piano, his eyes clenched in a trance, the notes floating above his head were no random ink spots dropped into the key of G. Schulz carefully chose each snatch of music he drew and transcribed the notes from the score. More than an illustration, the music was a soundtrack to the strip, introducing the characters’ state of emotion, prompting one of them to ask a question or punctuating an interaction.

You should read that. It’s a good article complete with pictures of gallery-types leaning on walls and wearing Snoopy jumpers and such. And you’ll probably find yourself wanting macaroni cheese for tea because it was cited as Beeth-oven’s favourite in an interesting aside.

So that was my interesting aside. Now, funnybooks!

Because I like the cover, the second volume in the Ted McKeever Library gets top billing this week. The first, Transit, was released not so long ago and if you’re a fan of McKeever’s Metropol world you’ll be after Eddy Current too. Collected for the first time since its debut in 1987, this is a darkly funny story about an asylum escapee obsessed with a superhero known as The Amazing Broccoli. So much so in fact, he buys a mail-order battery-powered Dynamic Fusion Suit and decides to save the world. Well you would, wouldn’t you. McKeever talks about it here.

Next we’ve got something Nat’s been rabbiting on about for a while – Angora Napkin by Troy Little. You’ve probably seen Little’s work before in Chiaroscuro, a series of graphic novels about an angst-ridden twentysomething artist whose life of drinking and whingeing changes forever after a case of mistaken identity. Angora Napkin’s very different. It’s about an all-girl pop group called who take a short cut on Halloween and run into one of the walking dead. So they bring him along to a secret underground party, naturally, and accidentally convince him to get rid of all life on earth. The art’s great (Little talks about it on his blog) and it’s soon to be a cartoon on the telly. Buy the book and pretend you got there first.

Another offbeat release this week is Mysterius the Unfathomable #1 by Jeff Parker (X-Men: The First Class, Agents of Atlas) and Tom Fowler (Green Arrow, Caper), a six-issue miniseries about a rude, cowardly, manipulative, lecherous, middle-aged and dangerously bored magician who looks a bit like Geoffrey Rush. Jeff Parker is interviewed about the series here and talks about how he got together with MAD artist Tom Fowler

“In [the proposal], I had talked about wanting to capture some of the quality of Douglas Adam's Dirk Gently novels. Lo and behold, what was Tom reading just as this arrived in his inbox, but Long Dark Teatime of the Soul! Synchronicity like that can't be ignored, especially with this kind of subject matter.”

Then it’s writer versus artist here, when Parker interviews Fowler in amongst some preliminary sketches. It’s very funny. If they’re as much fun in Mysterius the Unfathomable it’s going to be a great series. Keep track of it on their blog!

Long time collaborators and malcontents Kathryn (Hellcat) and Stuart Immonen (Ultimate Spider-Man) see their year-long web project Never As Bad As You Think published in limited edition hardcover this week. Fifty-two full colour strips about paranoid urbanites and their pitiful failures, scorned waiters, cats, dogs, cake and everything in between. Boom! have some preview pictures put up by a very excitable Ross Richie who says this ‘ere book is ‘THE AWESOME’. In capitals.

So what are the proper superheroes up to this week? Dark Avengers #1 promises to be the dawning of a new era by Brian Michael Bendis and Mike Deodato Jr. Newsarama have a preview for you!

And in what is quickly becoming a weekly fixture, Here Are Some Things I Forgot Last Week That Are Good:

If you’ve been in the shop you will no doubt have seen Shaun Tan’s (The Lost Thing, The Red Tree) beautiful book, The Arrival. His new one Tales From Outer Suburbia was out last week in hardcover, and it’s already flying off the shelves. I’ll leave the reviewers to tell you all about it (ignore their Australian edition covers!), but be sure to have a look at selected pages from the book on Shaun Tan’s website.

Also missed last week was Joe R. Lansdale’s four-issue mini-series Pigeons From Hell: a fresh take on Robert E. Howard’s 1938 Weird Tales short story about an abandoned house where pigeons gather after dark, now collected in trade-paperback. Nathan Fox (DMZ) and Dave Stewart (Conan, The Umbrella Academy) provided the art and it’s well worth a read. There are some preview pages and babble from Lansdale on Newsarama from when it was shiny and new.

Another good’un was Parade (With Fireworks) in trade-paperback – an Eisner-nominated true story about loyalty and betrayal in cartoonist Michael Cavallaro’s family in the years between wars. Definitely worth a look and I would have said so last week if I wasn’t looking the other way when it came in.

So that’s yer lot! But I’ve got more news. If you’ve looked at your diary and found your February 3rd sadly empty, then here’s what you can do: Come to Gosh! between 12:30pm and 2pm to get your favourite Adrian Tomine book signed, then head on over to the ICA at 7pm to see him in conversation with Toby Litt as part of Paul Gravett’s ComICA festival. More details here!

But wait, there’s more! London-based artist and friend of Gosh! Jason Atomic unofficially broke a world record by painting 42 full-length portraits in the time it takes you to eat a sandwich and arse about on Facebook. Unofficial because no one’s willing to define what makes a portrait. See the video here and if you’re in Berlin on February 14th you can see him do it again.

And lastly, here’s something so desperately exciting that a customer almost exploded Mr Creosote-style when I told him. A Scott Pilgrim Gosh! Exclusive.

-- Hayley

Adrian Tomine Signing at Gosh! Comics

We’re thrilled to announce that Adrian Tomine, the supremely talented creator behind Optic Nerve, will be visiting Gosh! for his first ever UK appearance on Tuesday 3rd Februrary, 12.30 til 2pm. The indy superstar will be taking a long lunch to sign books and answer any questions you can throw at him.

A veteran of the underground scene Tomine kick started his career aged 16, self-publishing his ongoing series Optic Nerve. The quality of these early works quickly caught the attention of Drawn and Quarterly, and saw Tomine heralded internationally as a cult sensation. Drawing on a host of influences that include Jaime Hernandez and his buddy Daniel Clowes, he’s gone on to produce work that has won him a Harvey Award and a spot alongside Chris Ware as illustrator of choice at the New Yorker. Combining great visual flair with an unflinching eye for the human condition, he stands as one of the leading lights of the current breakout crop of creators. A position cemented by his most recent work, Shortcomings, collecting Optic Nerve Issues #9 to #11.

Praise for Shortcomings:

“Easily the most prodigious talent to burst on the alternative scene in several years”

Comics Journal

“Tomine's genius is to strip his medium of every possible type of grandiosity or indulgence, and the result is that life itself floods in. His mise-en-scene rivals Eric Rohmer's in its gentle precision, and his mastery of narrative time suggests Alice Munro. Shortcomings, as near as he'd get to a grand statement, is as deceptively relaxed and perfect as a comic book gets.”
- Jonathan Lethem
After the signing why not head over to ComICA to see him in conversation with Toby Litt? More information here!

The Gosh! Authority 14/01/09

Top of the muffin to you! Nothing quite as gobsmackingly horrific as Bono’s musical has come to my attention this week so I’ll spare you the sarky intro and head straight to the comics. And if you stick around I might even tell you about the incredibly under-publicised and little-known comic Amazing Spider-Man #583 wot’s got Barack Obama in it (and occasionally on it).

But first of all, here’s something you might have missed in Previews. Hidden way at the back and probably half in the crease (no respect, these young’uns) was James Jean’s XOXO Hugs and Kisses Postcard Book. It was released at San Diego Comicon in very small quantities and now the collection of 30 lovely looking postcards is finally in shops. Ours, specifically. Jean’s work has graced the covers of Fables (all of them recently collected in a big blue hardcover), Time Magazine, Rolling Stone, Atlantic Records and stacks more. Here are some preview pictures from Jean’s blog. Why not do what I do and stick them on your wall to cover up the gaping holes where you put your elbow through the plaster? I reckon Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen probably does it too.

In a similar arty vein, Sparrow has previously collected the likes of Ashley Wood and Rick Berry, but this latest volume is all about William Wray – the fine-art work of a cartoonist you might also know as Bill Wray whose series ‘Monro’ ran in MAD for 100 issues or so.
Have a poke about on his website where you can see examples of his work. Best known for his urban landscapes, he also paints women with their yaps out. Wahey!

Also out this week is MOME Volume 13 featuring the first of three parts of an all-new book by Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers creator Gilbert Shelton! Be a dear and don’t forget about these. There’s also brand new pages by Bottomless Belly Button’s Dash Shaw, as well as Thomas Ott (The Number), Josh Simmons (House), David Greenberger (Duplex Planet) to name but a few. Fantagraphics have put up some preview pictures on their Flickr site. Let’s hope no one goes on vacation and neglects to colour the cat’s leg.

There’s more great artwork in Jules Verne’s 20 000 Leagues Under the Sea hardcover by Gary Gianni. His previous work includes Batman: Black & White, Kidnapped, Moby Dick, Savage Tales of Solomon Kane, and Michael Chabon’s Gentlemen of the Road but he most recently popped up in this blog for his work in Hal Foster’s Prince Valiant. Here he retells the classic tale of Nemo and it looks rather brilliant, unlike the tiny rubbish previews available on the web. They’re postage-stamp sized so I won’t bother linking. Just come have a look in the shop. You’ll be glad you did.

Gosh-favourite Robert Kirkman’s Walking Dead reaches its 9th trade-paperback collection, Here We Remain, this week. Collecting issues #49-54, it sees Rick and Carl staggering on despite everything being irretrievably FUBAR. ('FUBAR' is an Andrew addition. I had to look it up on the bloody internet to figure out what he meant. Turns out it's from the army. Who knew?)

Gary Northfield’s Derek the Sheep strip has been running in The Beano since 2003 and if you’ve not seen it you’re in for a treat. This hardcover collects thirteen very funny stories. Here’s a lovely interview with the man himself. Andrew shouts ‘Tell ‘em it’s fab!’

And finally, here’s some stuff I didn’t mention last week that actually turned out to be worthy of it:

Wolverine Switchback (one-shot) has a great cover by Das Pastoras, and the innards by Pastoras, Joseph Clark, Gregg Hurwitz and Juan Doe are quite good too. We think so, and so do Comicbook Resources. Here! Have some belated preview pages.

Then there’s H.P Lovecraft’s Nyarlathotep, a wee hardcover that’s not comics but actual Lovecraft prose poetry with illustrations by Eisner winning Chuck BB (Black Metal).

Beasts 1 (a softcover after two sell-out hardcover editions) and Beasts 2 (a brand new hardcover) will be of interest to fans of contemporary art. They’re mythological menageries featuring beasties that were once thought to actually exist, depicted by the likes of (deep breath) Tony Millionaire, Souther Salazar, Jeff Soto, Dave Cooper, Tim Biskup, Seonna Hong, Jeremy Fish, James Jean (that guy again), Jay Ryan, Amanda Visell, Anders Nilsen, Andrew Brandou, Art Chantry, Brian Ralph, Bwana Spoons, Dave Cooper, Deth P. Sun, Esther Pearl Watson, Jason, Jesse LeDoux, Johnny Ryan, Jordan Crane, Keith Shore, Little Friends of Printmaking, Marc Bell, Martin Cendreda, Martin Ontiveros, Mat Brinkman, R. Kikuo Johnson, Richard Sala, Sammy Harkham, Seonna Hong, Stan Sakai, S. britt, Stella Im Hultberg, Steven Weissman, Tom Gauld, Tyler Stout… and that’s just the first volume.
Incidentally, Kyle Baker’s Nat Turner was also out in softcover last week. Read it! Gosh approved. Everybody likes Nat Turner.

Don’t forget the sale is still chugging along, with some great deals to be had and new stuff going out all the time. A couple of noteworthy additions this week are the hyperkinetic White Trash trade-paperback, written by Gordon Rennie with amazing art by the late Martin Emond for only £2 (imagine Tank Girl with Axl Rose as the lead), and crime thriller Manhattan 1957 by the father/son team of Yves & Hermann at £4. The latter is a wonderful little noir tale that fans of Ed Brubaker will love.

Alright, since you’ve no doubt knackered your finger in a swift scroll to the bottom, here it is: In celebration of a big nerd hanging his hat in the White House hallway (Joe Quesada said so not me, Mr Obama!), Marvel Comics have not only put Barack Obama on the front of the new issue of Amazing Spider-Man #583, they’ve also had him team up with Peter Parker! Wired tells you all about it here, and there’s a tiny preview here. We’re not going to have any spares of the Obama variant cover but we should have a few of the standard cover left for those who get in quick. We’ll be sure to get in the second printing with The Big O on the cover when it happens, probably a couple of weeks from now.

And that’s that.

The Gosh! Authority 07/01/09

Why, hello! Happy new year and all that. Thankfully I didn’t cark it over the holidays and am here to blog another day. The most exciting (I say exciting) thing to be brought to my attention today is something that won’t be news to you unless you’re as happily oblivious as Nat and me: a Spider-Man musical by Bono. Costing millions, it will take roughly 8000 years to break even according to some chap on the internet. What?

That aside, it’s a fairly small week to ease you gently into the new year – OR SO WE THOUGHT! It’s actually quite a big’un. Before I do the comics round-up hear ye this! Jeff Smith’s RASL hits the shelves today in its first oversized trade-paperback collection, Drift. This sci-fi series is already hugely popular even though it’s only up to issue #3, if you’ve missed it so far here’s your chance to catch up. Smith was interviewed by the PULSE in preparation for its release.

Another exciting and oddly oversized release this week is the highly anticipated Kramer’s Ergot Volume 7! A bit pricey perhaps at £95, but this hardcover’s big enough to set sail on. From an interview with Sammy Harkham, the man in charge of this epic anthology:
“You’ve seen that Little Nemo book?” he asks, hands spreading reflexively to encompass the famous, full-page scope of Winsor McKay’s early-20th-century newspaper strip. “Issue number seven is going to be like that. Big—big—16 by 21! Every artist gets three pages. That’s it. But with that assignment, an artist is going to make work that wouldn’t exist otherwise. I’m so excited.” And so he should be.

DC’s next big comics event Faces of Evil starts Thursday in Detective Comics #852 by Paul Dini and Dustin Nguyen. Following the events of Heart of Hush, this first of two parts sees Catwoman trying to settle the score – will she become a face of evil again? This one concludes at the end of the month in Batman #685. Then there’s Faces of Evil: Grundy, a one-shot origin story by Scott Kolins (Brave and the Bold) and Geoff Johns (Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds) about the man who would become marsh monster Solomon Grundy. Here’s a checklist for you to peruse and stick in yer handbag.

There’s another woman scorned in Kull #3 (of 6) by Arvid Nelson (Rex Mundi), in which Kull faces the wrath of his ex-wifey. Preview! First preview of the year, in fact.

Then Mike Mignola gives you part two of his Hellboy: The Wild Hunt eight-part miniseries which sees Hellboy contend with all manner of terrifying beasties during his journey through England. But he’s probably having an easier time of it than Kull. As a special bonus feature, this issue also includes a story written by Mignola and illustrated by B.P.R.D. artist Guy Davis! Have a look.

Secret Invasion War of Kings is the next Annihilation-styled cosmic event by Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning (both Nova), Paul Pelletier (Guardians of the Galaxy) and the best-named man in comics, Bong Dazo. The Inhumans are still reeling from the Skrulls invasion – so what happens next? See a bit of it here.

Speaking of Skrulls, the Punisher’s got his mitts on a high-powered Skrull rifle but who’s he aiming it at? Fear Agent team Rick Remender and Jerome Opena reunite for Punisher #1 Dark Reign and Comics Bulletin reckon it’s a solid start to a new series. Check that review for preview pages.

Fred Van Lente pops his head up in Marvel Zombies 3 #4 (of 4) which reaches its gory blood-soaked climax this week! Here’s a sneak peek of what’s in store. The Marvel Universe is mere seconds away from being totally and utterly &*$%ed. And if you want more zombies don’t forget to pick up Walking Dead #57 Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard’s cult-hit now celebrating its 5th year.

There’s been arse-kicking in everything mentioned so far so how about something comparably soft and fluffy? Sandman Dream Hunters #3 (of 4) by Gaiman and P. Craig Russell sees the monk make the brown-pants journey to the Palace of Dreams to have a word with the Dream King himself. One more issue to go!

So that’s the round-up. But enough of that. If you’ve not had a poke through the Gosh! Sale you’re a fool, a damn fool. Don’t buy socks in the sales – buy comics! Any time there’s a gap we shove something else in there so there’s new stuff all the time. We’ve got Brian Talbot’s Naked Artist for a mere 4 quid, the Top Shelf all-ages favourite Owly for £4, and even deluxe Ultimate Spider-Man hardcovers at £10 a piece. You’re bound to find something you like.

And finally, Andrew here with a bit of a shame-faced apology! Last week I touted Final Crisis Secret Files as a bit of a must-have, written by Morrison & Tomasi with art by Quitely and others, revealing the inner secrets of Final Crisis. In doing so, I was using the solicitation information DC had given right up until the week of the comics’ release which promised just such a comic. Thinking it was an important issue with work by the ever-popular Morrison & Quitely, we put it aside for Final Crisis subscribers. Of course, those who picked the issue up will know that Quitely only drew one of the covers, Morrison did one page of text and Peter J Tomasi was not actually anywhere to be seen. Instead we had a Libra origin story written by Len Wein and drawn by Tony Shasteen. Fair play to them, it wasn’t a bad read, but it wasn’t what we were promised and it wasn’t what I promised you. I hate to think that a recommendation I have made on this blog has in any way misled you, so with that in mind:

We would like to offer any of our customers who purchased Final Crisis Secret Files from us last week the opportunity to return the issue to us for a full refund on the price of purchase (£2.65).

Just bring it back in and mention to whoever is on the till that you’d like to return it, either as a credit against your purchases or a full refund.

Okay, that’s enough from me. Say goodbye, Hayley!

Goodbye,
Hayley.
