The Gosh! Authority 30/07/10

It’s a big’un this week so excuse me if I vaguely bunch stuff together for ease of whatevers. I’m aiming for a sort of biological grouping only less scientific and more stupid: Things That Could Be Pets, People, Vampires, Demons, Bats, Pigs, and Miscellaneous Leftover Bits. Watch this:

Things that could be pets:
Krazy Kat: A Celebration of Sundays is my numero uno this week because everything Sunday Press do is amazing and you know it. You can set sail on their books they’re so big. Patrick McDonnell (whose Mutts is a favourite of mine too, oh yesh!) provides the introduction and quite rightly points out that it’s nearing an astonishing hundred years since Krazy Kat first copped a brick (ZIP!) POW! right in the kisser. This hardcover collects the lovingly restored Sundays in their original size and colour, except for the ones they’ve embiggened a bit for size consistency. Particulars for the particular over at the Sunday Press site.

People, mostly:
Alan Moore’s Dodgem Logic #4 arrived late last week and it’s their best looking one yet thanks to the reliably brilliant Mr John Coulthart who provided the psychedelic Art Nouveau cover. If you don’t believe me you can compare ‘em – we’ve got issues #1, 2 and 3 lined up next to it on the counter. Coulthart talks about the artwork and the long running history of provocative cover art on 1960s underground magazines on his blog.

Moore appeared recently on stage talking about multiple dimensions, alternate universes and the astounding weirdness of science fact versus Hollywood/science fiction. He was joined by Brian Green, Brian Cox, Robin Ince and Jonathan Ross who coincidentally pops up on our new shelves this week with Turf #2. You can catch the recorded show Infinite Monkey Cage on BBC iPlayer until Monday afternoon.

Vampires:
As for Turf, the Sunday Times have exclusive images from tomorrow’s new issue, and over at Newsarama Ross discusses vampires, gangsters and nine-foot tall aliens.

Victor Gischler and Giuseppe Camuncoli set the ball rolling for some of the biggest changes in the Marvel Universe since Civil War by having one of the most dangerous villains whacked in Death of Dracula #1. Lots of things ARE AT STAKE, geddit? Preview.

Tomb of Dracula TP Volume 1 collects the first twelve issues of the Marv Wolfman/Gene Colan Marvel series from 1972, featuring the very first appearance of the now-synonymous-with-Wesley-Snipes character, Blade. Snipes is now somewhat inexplicably writing comics, though I’d reckon it’s probably more down to Peter Milligan (Greek Street, Hellblazer) making a concept work as an actual thing. He talks about After Dark #0 (preview) with Broken Frontier. It’s a post-apocalyptic science fiction miniseries and this issue’s only 75p so give it a go. Also it has demons/evil in it which, conveniently, so do these:

Gosh! Favourite Jill Thompson and Evan Dorkin’s Beasts of Burden is out in hardcover, featuring a bunch of extras that Thompson will tell you all about over here. If you missed the series entirely here’s the both of them discussing it before it all began.

John Arcudi and Peter Snejbjerg begin a new two-parter with Abe Sapien: Abyssal Plain #1 which has resulted in Newsarama and me learning a brand new word. The abyssal plain is a “flat or very gently sloping area of the deep ocean basic floor” and mostly unexplored, making for a cracking title and interesting premise to boot.

“The Abyssal Plain has long fascinated me for the same reason it fascinates anybody. It's part of the world, our world, about which so little is known, and each new discovery it relinquishes is surprising and loaded with information. And as I said before, a hell of a metaphor. "What lies beneath the surface," and all that, but there is actually another reason I chose the title which won't be clear until the end of the series. Keep 'em guessing, that's what I say.”

More of that interview over here, and a preview too.

The Strange Adventures of HP Lovecraft was a four-part series that’s been mentioned on the Gosh! Blog previously because it features the increasingly rare art of the brilliant Tony Salmons. It’s out in trade paperback this week and if you missed the boat entirely on this one you can read the first issue free on the internet. Writer Mac Carter talks with CbR and says of Salmons:

“Can we all just acknowledge, for the record, that Tony is one of the greatest comic book artists alive? In short, his work is [A RUDE WORD] awesome. Google some of his pin-ups – they'll blow you away. So many great artists of today cite him as an influence. The storytelling and images that come out of his head are nothing short of inspired and I can't wait for everyone to see his crazy cool stuff.”
Neither can we. Highly recommended.

Bats! Two things doing the batty-bat this week. Batwoman: Elegy Deluxe Edition Prem HC collects the Greg Rucka/J.H. Williams III run of Detective Comics. Rucka talks about it with CbR where there are pages and pages of glorious Williams III art. Kelley Jones provides the illustrations in this week’s instalment of the month-long Joker’s Asylum series – this time it’s the shape-shifting Clayface’s turn. Preview!

Pigs! Spider-Ham: 25th Anniversary Special #1 has a synopsis so eye-crossingly pig-punned that I’m not even going to bother making sense of it. Go forth, ye, to Marvel News where writers Tom DeFalco and Tom Peyer explain themselves. Preview. Theoretically pigs can be pets too. I’m a failed scientist. Anyway, without further ado, the Miscellaneous Leftover Bits:

Ultimate Comics Avengers Prem HC Next Generation collects Mark Millar’s Ultimate Avengers #1 – 6. Earlier this month Newsarama spoke with him here where they all say the word ‘ultimate’ a lot. Then Captain America pops up again in the Karl Kesel helmed Captain America: 1940s Newspaper Strip #1 (of 3) which he (Kesel, not Cap) talks about here. Preview.

Dynamite have added yet another comic to the already unwieldy octopus that is their Green Hornet line, Green Hornet: Parallel Lives #1 (of 5). It’s the prelude to the upcoming Seth Rogen film and gives you the origin of the Green Hornet/Kato team. Preview.

And finally, something strange and pretty from Sonja Ahlers to end on. Selves, a new book from Drawn & Quarterly, can be previewed here.

The Gosh! Authority 23/06/10

Sweaty Summery greetings to you, Gosh gang! If you missed our heartfelt rendition of Sumer Is Icumen In the other day then weep bitter tears my friend, it was excellent.

Strange doings on our new shelves this week courtesy of Fantagraphics! Tony Millionaire’s special brand of Odd abounds in a second instalment of the Billy Hazelnuts saga, Billy Hazelnuts & Crazy Bird HC. If you’ve not read the Eisner Award-winning first volume yet then fer chrissakes skip this paragraph because there’ll be spoilers comin’ at you like a flannel. In this volume Hazelnuts is all about family life with its household chores and daily cat avoidance until he’s landed with a baby owl after a scrap with its mother.

"... He has this sort of disgust with the corporeal reality of life, his own 'flesh' as well as the flesh of all these hideous, smelly farm animals around him,” says Millionaire. “Billy rebels against the whole animal stink, the horrible stench of being alive. But when he fights the owl, he is suddenly thrust into a position of responsibility; he has to bring this baby owl back to its mother who has flown off after the fight... The baby owl loves Billy, as he is made of suet and other leftover baking doughs which the rats found in the garbage. So with this loving creature eating him alive, swallowing everything about Billy, including his flesh and his time, [he] runs to his duty, and the adventure unfolds."

More Millionaire over at Comicbook Resources and a nice big PDF preview from Fantagraphics. It’s been a while since we’ve had one of those manhandling videos so as a special Wednesday afternoon treat you can have one of those too as long as you promise to eat your dinner.
The other offering from Fantagraphics is Temperance, an original hardcover graphic novel by Cathy Malkasian who previously brought you the very strange and somewhat Orwellian Percy Gloom (video). Temperance is a similarly gloomy tale of violence and control in which a battle-wounded man wakes up with no memory of his prior life.

Word is Malkasian’s now working on a comedic graphic novel for a change of scenery, but in the meantime this sounds like a hefty, rewarding read. She talks to Newsarama here, and there’s a PDF preview and a video too.

Archie: The Best of Dan DeCarlo HC Volume 1 collects the best work of the man who would define the iconic look of Riverdale and its inhabitants forever. It’s a fully recoloured, high quality affair collecting strips from the beginning of his career at Archie in the mid-1950s right up to the early ‘70s. Considering the man worked for the company for nearly 50 years there’s plenty more to come so keep an eye out.

I Thought You Would Be Funnier SC is a collection of stuff The New Yorker rejected, thinking it was not the best work of renowned cartoonist Shannon Wheeler. Wheeler, mostly known for his syndicated cartoon Too Much Coffee Man thinks otherwise and has stuck ‘em in a book for you. Reviews and previews from people who think similarly.

Cover Run: The DC Art of Adam Hughes HC pretty much does what it says on the tin along with commentary from the man himself plus a bunch of rarely seem preliminary stuff.

Expect lots of ladies; it’s Adam Hughes.

Last week I mentioned Rian Hughes’ Lifestyle Illustration of the 60s and I would have also mentioned his Custom Lettering of the 60s & 70s had it arrived half an hour earlier than it did. In the pre-computer days the strict rules of lasting practicality didn’t apply to custom-made, hand-drawn type and thus the designers were allowed and duly did to go a bit mental. Hughes has compiled a brick-sized wodge of one-off designs all carefully categorised in an influence family tree. It’s a great looking book and makes me hate bad computer lettering even more than I already do. Check it out at the publisher’s website.

As for comics this week here’s a quick round-up of mentionables:

Jam! Tales From the World of Roller Derby, an anthology one-shot with art from the likes of Eric Powell (The Goon) and Ray Fawkes (The Apocalipstix, Mnemovore). Preview of that one over here.

The Schizophrenic One-Shot written by the relatively new and unknown entity (comics-wise) Josh Frankel but deserves a mention because it’s illustrated by the brilliant Toby Cypress of Brian Wood’s The Tourist, and Glen Brunswick’s (Jersey Gods) Killing Girl.

Regular 20-something Sam is the titular schizophrenic whose hallucinations become real and manifest in the form of a different comics genre every episode; superhero, horror, romance, sci-fi, etc. Preview! Also, follow Cypressblog. There’s a good lad.

Bullet to the Head #1 by Matz (The Killer) and illustrated by Colin Wilson (Brubaker’s Point Blank) is a thing that already existed elsewhere but this is the first time we’ve seen it in English. It’s described as a crime saga with buddy cops and buddy crooks with one unlikely official in the middle with a target on his head. Preview.

And lastly, the big comic this week is undoubtedly Superman #700, the weighty 56-page extravaganza with all sorts of stuff going on. Dan “the man who killed Superman” Jurgens is here, James Robinson concludes his epic New Krypton run on the series, and you get a preview of the all-new ongoing Superman creative team of J. Michael Straczynski (Thor) and Eddy Barrows (Birds of Prey, Action Comics). It’ll be a good jumping on point for new readers, says JMS, in an essay on a lifetime of Superman that he wrote for DC’s The Source:

“We plan to bring Superman back to his roots, to really explore who he is…how he sees us, and how we see him, in a much more personal way than we’ve seen in a while. This is part of a larger effort that will have national ramifications, but I can’t say much more about it than that for now.... let’s just say that Superman may be a lot closer in proximity to you, the reader, than you ever guessed.”

It’s the big anniversary milestone (obviously) so Jeff Lemire reminisces too. Aw.

In other news, our very own Barnaby Richards (whose series of Things minicomics are proving very popular with people called Eddie Campbell and otherwise) has been quietly popping up in the Observer Magazine every Sunday illustrating Mariella Frostrup’s relationship column. If you’ve been missing out you can catch up over at his blog where you’ll also find the beginning of a new piece of ongoing work, Postcards From Cosmo. The series is Barney’s addition to a collaborative blog run by various children’s authors called Trapped By Monsters. We have no idea where it’s going and Barney’s certainly not letting on which makes it all the more exciting.

Having briefly mentioned Eddie Campbell, drawer of yesterweek’s boobs, I can neatly segue into something fantastically cool and strange happening on the other side of the world from where I currently sit. Listen up, Syd-a-ney, you’re in for a treat! As part of their Graphic program in August, Neil Gaiman will be appearing at the Sydney Opera House to read a previously unpublished story. Eddie Campbell’s fully painted illustrations will be projected onto the stage possibly outstripping the size of the artist’s ego in length and breadth but maybe not. While that’s going on Australian electric string quartet FourPlay – whose covers of songs by the Velvet Underground, Depeche Mode, Charles Mingus, and Radiohead made them somewhat famous among the Triple J crowd but who are now, I’m told, much more famous (and deservedly so!) than they were when I left the country years ago – will be performing an entirely new score. If you don’t know who FourPlay are this is them and they are good. I am unspeakably envious of you people. Go boldly and report back immediately. But first you need tickets.

And I’m out.

The Gosh! Authority 16/06/10

It’s a small-ish week but we’ve got plenty of boobs drawn by Eddie Campbell to make up for it. The Playwright is the yellow-est thing in town and a glorious looking thing on the inside too. Campbell (Alec: The Years Have Pants) says “[It’s] the most colourful, sexiest thing likely to ever come from my hand. And if that sentence sounds like one of the Playwright's own double entendres, so let it remain.”

It’s a comedy about the sex life of a celibate middle-aged man written by fellow British ex-pat Daren White who is no stranger to a Campbellian collaboration (see weird Elseworlds book Batman: The Order of Beasts). The character first appeared in White’s own anthology series DeeVee, in a – if I remember rightly – two or three pager black and white story. The new book is fully painted in the brightest of bright colours which somehow makes the Marks-&-Spencers-underpants-Englishness of it all the more funny. The whole thing is so cringeingly English it could only have been deliberate and “aimed to exaggerate the stuffy, self conscious embarrassment that underpins a certain type of Englishman,” says White.

Comicbook Resources have an interview with the both of ‘em and a preview of the first chapter. Campbell was putting up bits and pieces as he worked on his now somewhat defunct blog; they’re still there if you know where to look. As books go I’ve seen bigger: This is an object of joy and misery you can fit in the palm of your hand. Highly recommended. And rude.

As for the rest of the week’s swag there’s considerably less onanism about. But there are plenty of lovely young ladies in the new Rian Hughes edited Lifestyle Illustration of the 60s. Just saying.

Check out the review in the Independent and preview bits here.

We’ve got Neil Young’s Greendale, his critically acclaimed album from 2003 adapted into a graphic novel by Joshua Dysart (Unknown Soldier) and Cliff Chiang (Human Target). The ten song rock opera had themes of environmentalism and corruption running through it, all seen through the eyes of Green family and other folk in the seaside town. But Dysart isn’t merely trudging over the same ground as Young.

“There’s a lot of mysticism, a lot of magic in the Green female line that hadn’t really made itself known on the album. And Karen [Berger] and I both figured, this is Vertigo and Vertigo has a strong tradition of using magic as a narrative device. Why not go in that direction?”

Newsarama
have an interview and over at CbR there’s already a review kicking about. Preview pages and a chunk more interview over here too.

Grant Morrison’s Seven Soldiers of Victory is collected in hardcover for the first time. Never read it before? It’s about “…grass-roots super-people,” said Morrison, “- the ones who don't have amazing cars or secret headquarters, really, so the whole thing explores what it would actually be like to be a C-list hero on the margins, in a world where Superman and the Green Lantern get all the attention. Our characters are puritan Goths, freaks, monsters, losers and wannabes all clamouring for a place in the spotlight.”

Each mini-series (of which there were seven, y’see) focuses on a different character but everything interweaves and connects in the end because it’s Morrison at the helm. In this book you’ll get The Guardian, Klarion, Zatanna and The Shining Knight but for the other soldiers you’ll have to wait for collection number two. J.H. Williams III, Cameron Stewart, Frazer Irving, Simone Bianchi, Ryan Sook and Mick Gray provide the art.

Criminal: The Sinners TP hits the shelves this Thursday in which Brubaker brings back his favourite character, Special Forces soldier Tracy Lawless who you might remember from such Criminal books as Lawless (it’s on the shelf; we can hook you up with one if you’re lacking). That said, everything you need to know about the guy is contained in the first issue of The Sinners, weaved into the narrative rather than a Previously, on… scenario. Which is nice.

We’re always foisting Criminal books on people here at Gosh! because we like ‘em so much so if you’ve yet to read one we can’t understand what’s keeping you. As ever it’s illustrated by the ridiculously talented Mr Sean Phillips (of Incognito and owner of Gosh! approved hairstyle) whose artwork you can see alongside this interview with Brubaker from way back in 2009.

There’s a new Hellblazer trade out too. Hooked collects the second arc of Peter Milligan’s (Greek Street) run on the series in which Constantine goes to great and ridiculous lengths to get back the girl after she dumps him, as you do. Here’s a review of the first issue in the book. Shape-shifting demons and love potions abound.

If you’re after a spot of ultra-violence this week you can’t go wrong with Jason Aaron’s (Scalped) PunisherMAX HC Kingpin illustrated by Steve Dillon (Punisher: Welcome Back Frank) in which Aaron mixes some regular Marvel characters into the soup. Wilson Fisk isn’t the Kingpin yet but have you ever wondered how the Punisher helped him get that way? Aaron talks to CbR here.

As for your regular floppy comics we’ve got New Avengers #1 by Brian Michael Bendis and Stuart Immonen whose Moving Pictures graphic novel from last week is well worth a look. New Avengers #1 ties into the whole Heroic Age thing and you can preview it here. Amazing Spider-Man Presents Black Cat #1 (of 4) is something you’ll want to pick up if you’re following regular Amazing Spider-Man because it’s knee-deep in Grim Hunt. For the full run-down on that you can poke your nose in at IGN, but if you just want a preview of this week’s thing with artwork by the fantastic Javier Pulido here you go.

And finally, the McCloonan jam print is going great guns so if you’re still after a copy speak now or forever hold your peace. Only available here at Gosh! Now! Limited time! Etc etc! While we’re talking Gosh! exclusives we’ve got more exciting Bookplate Edition news in the post (quite literally in the post) so keep an eye on the blog. One of them might just be by the very excellent and very tall Sarah McIntyre who drew yours truly earlier this week. I’ll keep you in the loop. It’s my job after all.

The Gosh! Authority 09/06/10

Something we always get asked for that inevitably elicits a disappointing response is the long out of print Spanish/French comic Blacksad by Juan Diaz Canales and Juanjo Guarnido. An English translation collection has been in the works for years but never materialised until Dark Horse picked up the reigns after a previous publisher bottomed out. It collects the first three books in the series, the final one in English for the very first time.

It’s a beautifully illustrated thing, a 1950s trenchcoat-and-cigarettes detective story about murders, child abductions and the like starring anthropomorphic private investigator John Blacksad. As this sceptical reviewer pointed out there’s many a furry character devoid of facial expression – not so in the case of Blacksad and its brilliantly rendered cast courtesy of ex-Disney artist Guarnido. Dark Horse have an extended flipbook preview for you.

Kathryn and Stuart Immonen’s second webcomic is a completely different beast to their Never As Bad As You Think. Moving Pictures, collected this week in a great looking book from Top Shelf, is set during WWII when the Nazis were pocketing much of Europe’s great art. But that’s not the point of it all.

“The history is just a backdrop to tell a f*cked up love story that's about how we assign value to things and people, how we behave when not everyone is playing by the same rules… in the end, maybe it's all about the fundamentally perverse nature of desire, about not being to help wanting what you want even if you don't know why. And how, from the outside, we really don't know anything about someone else's intimacies.”

More of that interview here along with preview pages too.

Two books on the making of Pixar’s Toy Story have arrived on our shelves, which means we’re not far off the release date for the third instalment. Us lot in the UK won’t be getting it ‘til time in late July, so in the meantime you’ll have to make do with these lovely things. The first is Toy Story: The Art and Making of the Animated Film which isn’t technically a new book but one that has fallen in and out of print over the last fifteen years. There are a lot of photos of its innards alongside this painfully ploddy review but worth having a look if you’re thinking about picking up a copy before it disappears again.

The other is the Art of Toy Story 3 which gets a cracking review over at Pixar Planet. Everyone who’s said anything about it on the web is pretty adamant that this is not something to read before the film if you’re the kind of person who gets stroppy around spoilers, consider yourself warned. Buy it and hide it from yourself for a month.

Next to that you’ll find the latest Harker book, The Woman in Black, by Roger Gibson and Vince Danks. This time they find themselves up north in time to witness the murder of mystery novelist Agatha Fletcher and the annual Whitby Goth Weekend. This trade collects issues 7 to 12 so it’ll bring you bang up to date. Preview pages, annotations and more over at Gibson’s blog.

The latest Hellboy trade paperback you’ll be requiring is Hellboy Volume 10: The Crooked Man & Others, which includes (obviously) The Crooked Man, Mignola and Corben’s Eisner Award-winning miniseries of two years ago. Ex-Gosh! Tom told you why you’d like it back then and I don’t see why I shouldn’t have him tell you again since he does it so eloquently. Preview.

The biggest comic out this week is undoubtedly Batman #700, one prong of Grant Morrison’s three-pronged Batman attack. Morrison has said that all his Bat books ultimately connect and interweave so if you’re following Batman & Robin you should probably be picking up Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne and his run on the regular Batman comic too. As for this week’s offering…

#700 is my version of a traditional anniversary issue, so it's a kind of done-in-one story. Tony Daniel is doing the Batman of the past, which is Bruce Wayne, Frank Quitely is doing Batman & Robin of the present, with Dick Grayson, and Andy Kubert is doing Batman of the future, which is Damian. And there's also a final section with David Finch doing the Batman of the far future, right up to Batman 1,000,000. It's three Batman, one impossible crime, and there's a time-travel story involving Professor Nichols, who vanished from Batman around 1964, and it's got the Neal Adams Batman and the Carmine Infantino Batman... it's a mindbreaker of a story. It took me two months to write this monster. I hope it works. It's a stand-alone celebration issue--it's got a bunch of pin-ups in the back as well, I think.”

More of that at Techland. Batman #701 and #702 are also by Morrison so stick ‘em on your standing order if you haven’t done already.

The mysterious undead sheriff Buzzard in Eric Powell’s The Goon has landed his very own three-issue miniseries with the first instalment out this week. It’s not a reveal-all origin story and if anything the series merely adds to the guy’s mystery, according to Powell. "He begins to discover new things about himself. It's like going through puberty for a 100 year old ghoul who eats dead people." More of that interview here. As usual the art’s amazing and you can see it in this preview.

Dream Logic #1 is a new thing from David Mack (Kabuki), a 48-page art book full of sketches, step-by-step art techniques, commentaries, figure drawings, a tarot card set, paintings and scripts – all new stuff. I’ve been trying to find more information on it and failing. There’s a thing on Newsarama about it but for some reason their server ain’t working. Keep trying, it’ll wake up eventually. You can expect #2 some time in August.

Alan Moore’s fan-favourite pulp action hero returns this week in Tom Strong and the Robots of Doom #1 (of 6) as written by 2000AD veteran Peter Hogan and illustrated by Tom Strong co-creator Chris Sprouse. Over at Newsarama Hogan talks about the character, writing Nazi speeches and how Tom Strong and the Robots of Doom may well be the best gig in comics.

Finally, big thank yous to everyone who came along to the Becky Cloonan, Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie signing on Saturday. It’s lovely to see you twooting happily about the free prints you scored. If you didn’t make it on Saturday but would like a copy of the McCloonan jam print we’re now selling a limited number of them here at Gosh! for a tenner each. Overseas? We can do that too. Here it is again:

And here are their cheery faces:

Follow ‘em!: @kierongillen, @beckycloonan and @McKelvie.

The Gosh! Authority 03/06/10

Greetings on this fine sunny Thursday. You should all be sitting in a beer garden going pink but on the off chance you still fancy huddling inside reading comics there’s a hefty load to carry home tomorrow. That’s right, tomorrow meaning Friday. Your typically wet Bank Holiday Monday has pushed everything outta whack which is a far less exciting statement than one involving volcanoes.

This week you’ve got the penultimate issue of new Demo on offer, which is a convenient excuse for me to remind you that we’ll have the shockingly talented Becky Cloonan signing in the shop this Saturday. She’ll be joined by Phonogram duo Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie and if you’re one of the first 100 attendees you’ll go away with a free jam print by the two-headed beast McCloonan. Full details in this post, and that's the final artwork at the top of this post.

Marking the imminent release of the Jonah Hex movie, Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti have gone done written an all new Hex graphic novel illustrated by the legendary Tony DeZuniga who co-created the character with John Albano back in the 70s. The story is one thought up by the original creators long ago but for whatever reason never happened. “This is Hex as he was imagined decades ago,” says Gray in an interview with Newsarama. If you’ve never read Jonah Hex this will probably be a good jumping on point for the monthly series. Loads of reviews on the web if you have a poke about. Like this one.

Another original graphic novel out this week is A God Somewhere, already making something of a rumble on the internet with brilliant review after brilliant review.

Written by John Arcudi (B.P.R.D, Wednesday Comics) and illustrated by Peter Snejberg (Starman, The Light Brigade) it’s the story of a man who develops superheroic powers after a mysterious accident all told from the point of view of his still very human best friend. Mike Mignola says A God Somewhere is "the most human take on the superhero story I have ever seen.” Arcudi and Snejberg talk about it with Comicbook Resources but they’re heavy on the spoilers so perhaps you’d better save it for afters.

Hot Rock is an adaptation of one of Donald Westlake’s novels entirely separate from Darwyn Cooke’s Parker series. This time it’s illustrated by bande desinĂ©e artist Christian “LAX” Lacroix and it looks bloomin’ marvellous. It’s not the first time this particular novel has be adapted (remember that Robert Redford film?) and it’s little wonder – this is a classic Westlake crime caper, full of black humour and style. Here are some of its innards:

Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess (Blueberry Girl) team-up again for Instructions, a hardcover illustrated poem on how to survive a fairytale. Over at Green Man Press Vess talks about the art and shows pencil to painting evolutions. It’s a cracking poem (if you’ve not read it you can read it here) brought to life by a fairytale master. Go see the book trailer narrated by Gaiman himself, then touch the wooden gate in the wall you never saw before.

That’s it for books but I should point out that Grant Morrison’s Batman R.I.P. is now available in trade paperback, as is Final Crisis. About time too.

The weirdest thing on the shelf this week is without doubt the first issue of the new six-part series by David Hine (Spider-Man Noir, The Brave and the Bold) and Shaky Kane (2000AD), Bulletproof Coffin. Hine turns up in a lot of DC/Marvel stuff these days but Kane’s Jack Kirby-esque illustration’s a rarer treat. We haven’t anything from him in years but from the buzz on the internet it looks like Bulletproof Coffin will make up for it. They’ve revived a bunch of forgotten Golden Age superheroes (Coffin Fly!) and it looks completely mental.

“This comic is the book Shaky and myself have always wanted to buy, but no one was really doing it. It’s a satire of all the comics we love from the last 60 years, including the post modern comics of the 90’s. We mock but we do it with deep affection. It’s like taking the piss out of your Grandad. He may be old and smelly but you still love him,” says Hine.

“It’s about dead superheroes, stone-age girls in chamois leather bikinis, eyeball-headed psychics, bulletproof coffins with spiked tires, spirit walkers, secret attic rooms full of comic book collections, and resurrected GI’s!” says Kane.

More of that nonsense over at Newsarama and a preview of #1 at CbR. Bleeding Cool got their mitts on some images from later issues so you can have them too.

Steve Niles (30 Days of Night) and Ashley Wood’s latest creation also stems from a love of old comics, as well as vintage films and long phone conversations about Leonard Nimoy’s In Search Of. Mystery Society #1 is about a pair of esoteric adventurers investigating occult conspiracies and government cover-ups, Area 51, etc. Niles talks (very) excitedly about it over at CbR and raves about the interior art by Fiona Staples (North 40). Plus it’s already sold out at the publishers and going to a second printing. Preview.

It’s almost unheard of for a G.I. Joe comic to get a mention on the Gosh! Blog but this one’s written by Max Brooks (Zombie Survival Guide, World War Z) and illustrated by Howard Chaykin (Dominic Fortune) and Antonio Fuso so it’s bloody well getting a mention. G.I. Joe Hearts and Minds #1 spotlights two different G.I. Joe and Cobra members every issue and first off the block is Spirit and Major Bludd. Review and preview.

In other comics news Hawkeye & Mockingbird get their very own ongoing series (preview) and there’s a the Serenity one-shot you might fancy. Called Float Out, it’s by writer/actor/comedian Patton Oswalt (The Goon, Batman, JLA, Dollhouse, Rattatouille) with art by Patric Reynolds who talks to Newsarama about it. Preview.

We’ve got a brand new issue of Martin Eden’s Spandex on the shelves in all its big gay glory and Eden tells us he’s also running an online gallery of Japan-related art with a Spandex twist. Loads of indie artists are involved so go see what’s doing over at the Spandex website.

Here we are at the end of the post and as a cherry on top you can have two pictures of two of my favourite comic creators signing in our basement last week. Eagle-eyed Goshers might even recognise three others in the frame. Could they be Rian Hughes, Sean Phillips and Duncan Fegredo at the front of the line?

I reckon so.
