Due To Arrive 04/02/10
The Gosh! Authority 27/01/10
Like buses they’ve all arrived at once. This week you’ll find these chaps jostling for top spot on the new shelf:
Gosh! Favourite Ragnar’s new hardcover Big City is ‘160 f***ing pages of pure creative bliss!’ says Alberto Ruiz, who has also put up loads of preview pages and said something about his mother-in-law’s beard. Ragnar himself tracked the progress of the book over at his blog. A highly recommended lovely looking thing that you can’t miss because it’ll be in front of your face.
Shane Glines of Cartoon Retro fame (warning – high likelihood of retro boobs) gives you Lily & Flinch, another drool-worthy addition to our collection of painfully stylish sketchbooks.
It’s a deluxe hardcover edition of something that was originally only available as a print-on-demand softcover from Lulu but is somehow inexplicably cheaper than that original edition. As an extra bonus this one features a new cover and a few more images than the last. Glines was previously mentioned on the Gosh! Blog back when we got his Cartoon Retro Volumes 1 and 2, still available here in the shop and we still reckon you’d like ‘em.
In Shag’s latest offering it looks like he’s channelling Hieronymus Bosch and his sombre tones. “Something happened to me in the last year - call it an unexpected change of hear, if you like, but a lot of the unfettered hedonism my artwork espoused has begun to catch up with me,” says he. See what he means in these photos from the show’s opening in Los Angeles. Dark and weird.
Sam Hiti’s strange and brilliant inky manifestations are back in Ghoulash 2 which is - you’ll be happy to know - a really, truly bizarre little book. Have a look at the cover and nowt else needs saying. Beside it you’ll find his Death Day Prologue which is the prologue to his upcoming graphic novel Death Day. Like it says on the tin.
Jim Rugg and Brian Maruca (the blokes responsible for Street Angel) want you to funk it up hard style in their new book Afrodisiac, in which the hero has (yep, you guessed it) an afro as well as aphrodisiac superpowers over all women. He originally appeared in the now out-of-print anthology Project: Superior in a story that’s reprinted here along with a load of brand new stuff in one blaxploitation hardcover package. You can have a PDF preview and a thoroughly informative review, but if you want funky music and taglines I wholeheartedly recommend you watch this thing.
45 is an ambitious new superhero thing written by one guy called Andi Ewington and drawn by forty-five others all doing a page each – John Higgins, Sean Phillips, Gary Erksine, and 42 (count ‘em) others. It’s a bunch of interviews with superheroes conducted by father-to-be James Stanley who wants to know what’s in store for his unborn child if it ends up having superpowers. Ewington talks about the book, the people and the process in this interview. You’ll find lots more stuff over at the 45 blog. The third volume of Fantagraphics’ Harvey and Eisner nominated Hotwire has arrived and it looks great. In it you’ll find stuff by Johnny Ryan (Angry Youth Comix), Sam Henderson, Michael Kupperman (Tales Designed to Thrizzle) and loads more. Because we’re living in the future you now have a choice: PDF preview (old hat) or our new favourite thing – a video of a man flipping (rather roughly if you ask me) through the book in question. Nat watched it a few times and reckons they should stick this stuff on telly.
Nat also thinks you should read Dennis the Menace and said so ages ago. Given that the latest volume will be on the shelf this afternoon it’s as good a time as any to refer you back to his enthusiastic review which I happily swiped when the previous volume came out and fully intend to do again:
“In some ways it baffles me that these Dennis the Menace collections don’t sell nearly as well as the Peanuts equivalents. Like Peanuts the strips themselves are gently comic, rather than laugh out loud funny, although this often doesn’t prepare for the occasional really funny, dark or even borderline sinister gag that can take you quite by surprise. Like Peanuts it’s also steeped in that lovely 50s Americana that gives you that wonderful feeling you can only usually achieve by watching a live action Disney movie on a wet Bank Holiday Monday while enjoying some hot tea and toast.”
The Complete Dennis the Menace 1961 – 1962 by Hank Ketcham. Read it.
But enough of books. They’re too heavy to carry home anyway. How about some comics? The latest in Robert Kirkman’s Pilot Season is Demonic #1 about a possessed man who will do anything the demon asks as long as it promises not to make him kill his wife and daughter. As usual, whichever of the Top Cow Pilot Season one-shots gets the most votes is destined to become an ongoing series. Choose wisely.
Brian Michael Bendis co-founder of the Ultimate Universe adds another branch to the tree and introduces a powerful new villain in Ultimate Comics Enemy #1 (Of 4). There’s a preview here and a full rundown on what to expect here.
And finally, if you’ve been following DC’s one-issue resurrections you’ll want to pick up Atom & Hawkman #46 by Geoff Johns and Ryan Sook. Preview here. After this one there’s only one more to come – Greg Rucka’s The Question #37 illustrated by the original Question artists Denys Cowan and Bill Sienkiewicz. You can expect that next week.
And I’m done. See you Thursday.

The Gosh! Authority 20/01/10
Twenty-ten, two thousand and ten or whatever you want to call it (2K-10?) is definitely taking its time getting off the ground, comics-wise. Yep, it’s another small one this week but as you’ll see in a minute it’s still worth hauling yourself into the shop for a few noteworthy arrivals.
One such newbie is the latest creator-owned miniseries from everyone’s favourite bald magician, Grant Morrison. It’s called Joe the Barbarian, it’s eight issues long (the first only 75p!) and it’s about a kid with a overactive imagination, Type 1 diabetes and a whole house between him and his life-saving meds. Insulin deprivation transports him Narnia-style to a world inhabited by his toys, making for a story described as a cross between Home Alone and Lord of the Rings. Here’s a preview and here’s what Morrison has to say:
“Joe the Barbarian is about a Boy and his House. It's about a modern kid's journey to Death's Door and what he finds there. Joe's the son of a soldier, like all of us in the military-industrial society of spectacle and denial, and a kid literally facing Death.”
More of that here. It’s illustrated by Sean Murphy (Year One: Batman/Scarecrow, Hellblazer) who also has a few things to say over there. Apparently Joe the Barbarian comes after a long period of Murphy feeling as if he was blacklisted at DC, his picture hung at the front desk to notify the staff if he ever came pleading.
The latest in Drawn & Quarterly’s John Stanley Library is Thirteen Going On Eighteen and it can be all yours this week. The series turned up in the mid-sixties along with Melvin Monster, when Stanley had stopped writing and drawing for already established titles such as Little Lulu and started doing his own stuff. It’s about two female teenage friends and the rivalry and nonsense that comes with being just that. As usual it’s designed by Seth so it’s bound to look bloomin’ lovely on the shelf.
There’s more nice reprinted stuff in the Barry Windsor-Smith Conan Archives Volume 1 HC. Dark Horse have split his seminal 1970s run on the title into two remastered/recoloured hardcover books. Looky here for a preview.
Other than that we’ve got a new four-parter series from Jeff Parker called Avengers Vs Agents of Atlas (preview here) and the next in DC’s line of Blackest Night resurrected titles: Starman #81. Written by James Robinson with art by Fernando Dagnino and Bill Sienkiewicz, it’s one more issue of a series long dead. Robinson tweets "Just so everyone knows now, Blackest Night Starman will feature a Black Lantern Starman. It will feature Opal and characters therein. But It will not have Jack Knight. He is happily in SF like me. And if he ever came back, it should be something bigger then a single issue. But I am very happy with the issue I've written. I think you'll dig it." You probably will.
And that’s about it! Short, sweet and ended while we still think fondly of each other.
G’bye!

The Gosh! Authority 13/01/10
Hello! Despite this morning’s surprise snow you’ll be glad to know that your comics will be waiting for you in their usual places on Thursday. They all arrived on time so there’s no need to worry about anything other than tomorrow’s slippery journey into town. Hooray for everything that isn’t snow.
It’s a tiny one this week so I won’t keep you long. Stuff to look out for includes the first volume of Sanchez Abuli and Jordi Bernet’s masterpiece Torpedo, the very stylish hardboiled crime comic about the underbelly of Noo Yok City in the ‘30s. Bernet’s art is cracking (as is Alex Toth’s who illustrated the first two Torpedo stories) and full of squinty-eyed gangsters, good hats and the occasional boob or two. Jimmy Palmiotti provides the new translation and if you’re wondering why it’s such a lovely looking book (see the end papers) it’s because it’s designed by that old Gosh! favourite of ours, Mr Darwyn Cooke. How d’ya like them credits.
Peter Milligan’s (Greek Street) Human Target: Chance Meetings is released in trade-paperback this week – just in time for the (American) premiere of the TV show. This trade collects for original four-issue Vertigo series from 1999 along with the standalone 96-page graphic novel that followed it. If you’re wondering what the TV show’s going to be like you can head thataway for a trailer.
Alan Moore’s Neonomicon Hornbook is bound to confuse people (read: it confused us) so here’s what it is: it’s the preview book of a sequel series to The Courtyard featuring some completed pages from the first issue, bits of Moore’s original script, design sketches and an interview with the artist Jacen Burrows. The series (in which Moore continues his reinvention of the Lovecraft mythos) was supposed to have launched in the Autumn just gone so I’m guessing we’ll see it pretty soon.
Aliens Vs Predator: Three World War is a new six-parter by John Arcudi with lots of aliens, lots of predators and probably lots of killings too. #1 is out this week and editor Chris Warner tells you all about it here. It’s worth pointing out because Rick Leonardi of the recent Vigilante is doing the art. Have a preview.
And finally (I told you it was a wee’un), there was a minor misprint in last week’s Siege #1. It’s somewhere in the Ares War Plan transcript but don’t ask me exactly where it lurks. If it bothers you, Marvel have put up an online cock-up free version for you.
That’s it! See you Thursday.

The Gosh! Authority 06/01/10
Theoretically this was going to be the week when everything went back to normal but thanks to the snow (thanks, snow!) it won’t be doing that. This week’s delivery will be delayed because the deliveryman doesn’t want to be stranded in Narnia and then forced to eat your comics in order to survive – and rightly so! So basically we don’t know when they’ll arrive. It’s possible they’ll be in tomorrow as long as nothing goes horribly wrong on the motorway. As soon as they arrive I’ll announce it on Facebook, Twitter and the blog so watch this space.
First up in our collection of books currently snowed in up north is a new one from indie star Dash Shaw, author of Bottomless Belly Button and numerous other bits and bobs you’ll have seen in MOME. In fact it’s mostly his MOME stuff that makes up the bulk of this collection along with a new 20-page story and other lesser-known stories from all over. Fantagraphics have a 10-page PDF preview for you and over at Comics Alliance Shaw talks manga, telepathy, artschool – the usual stuff and junk.
Then there’s the second hardcover instalment of Last Gasp’s Art of Herge: Inventor of Tintin series. The previous volume covered Herge’s first thirty years by reprinting schoolboy sketches, his first published drawings and his earliest comics. This one picks up where the last left off in 1937 when Herge was thirty years old and the world was on the brink of war. It’s loaded with high quality reproductions of illustrations which you’ll be happy to know are all presented in chronological order (top marks) and accompanied by various natterings by Tintinologists Phillipe Goddin and Michael Farr.
The Troublemakers is a hardcover graphic novel by Gilbert Hernandez about greedy low-lifes chasing a pile of money. Comicbook Resources placed it in the L&R universe thusly: “The Troublemakers is billed as the second comic adaptation of a film starring Love and Rockets' Luba's half-sister, Rosalba “Fritz” Martinez, and the Dark Horse miniseries Speak of the Devil was an account of "actual events" that inspired a movie--although these events and all of Fritz's films, of course, only exist within the Love and Rockets universe.” You get the idea. Hernandez talks about it over here where you can also read a bunch of pages and there’s already a review kicking about over on iFanboy.
If you’re a fan of dinosaurs you’ll probably want to get your mitts on two new ones from William Stout, the illustrator whose name is in the credits of almost every film that’s got a dinosaur in it: The Land Before Time, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park, Pan’s Labyrinth, and Walt Disney’s Dinosaur to name only a few. He’s got two new books out this week and this is them: Dinosaur Discoveries comes in both hardcover and soft and contains 65 full colour illustrations of new dinosaurs discovered within the last twenty years. Dinosaur Discoveries A-Z is the same stuff in a reduced-size kid-friendly format much like the Little Golden Book series. If you’ve not seen his stuff before go and look now.
Town of Evening Calm, Country of Cherry Blossoms is a top notch manga by Fumiyo Kouno that has for whatever reason been unavailable for some time. It’s about the after effects of the Hiroshima bombing and there’s not a shred of cringe-worthy sentimentality to be found. Here’s a review. Highly recommended.
In comics we’ve got the second issue of Greg Rucka’s (Detective Comics, Queen & Country) Stumptown, previously mentioned back on the Gosh! Blog when the first bit arrived. If you head back to that post there’s an interview with Rucka about the series which is shaping up to be something rather special.
Jeff Parker (Agents of Atlas, Thunderbolts) looks back on one of Marvel’s first heroes in Marvel Boy: The Uranian #1 (of 3) which is all about Bob Grayson/Marvel Boy in his pre-Uranian days. There’s already a review of it as well as some promising preview pages over here.
And finally, here’s something kind of odd.
Remember that horrible/excellent Brian Yuzna film Society starring Days of Our Lives star Billy Warlock and a whole lot of gloopy alien sex? If not, skip this and I’ll see you in the next paragraph. Colin Barr, Shelby Robertson and Neill Cameron mark the 20th anniversary of the cult horror film by re-issuing their comics sequel Party Animal in lieu of an actual film sequel. There are two issues of it and I have no idea if they’re any good but if the line “I really am a butthead” means anything to you, you might want to pick this up.
Before I sign off there’s a few other bits of interest. F’rinstance, Image have put up a preview for the cover of Jonathan Ross’ new comic Turf. Just below that is the cover to upcoming Free Comic Book Day book Fractured Fairytales which I’m told has stuff in it by the lovely Christian Ward (Olympus). Also in my bag of blog-end delights is this two-day event in London called Tokyo Day (misleading, it’s two) during which you can experience the various faces of Tokyo. They’ll be screening anime such as Astro Boy so if you fancy it you can get all the details you need at their website.
In the potential absence on comics on Thursday you can console yourself with this week’s Strip! show on Resonance 104.4 FM. Just before Fred Van Lente signed comics for Gosh! customers last year (last year!) he sat out the back and recorded an interview with Alex Fitch. You can hear it at 5pm tomorrow but I’m sure the recording will turn up on the net soon so no tears if you miss it.
And that’s it! Again, NO COMICS TODAY, MAYBE COMICS TOMORROW if you’re lucky. Keep checking the Blog/Twitter/Facebook for updates because you’ll get ‘em as soon as we do.
