The Gosh! Authority 30/12/09

As it's Christmas/New Year/Bedlam there are only two comics in this week and this is them:

Blackest Night #6 by Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis which means we're nearing the end of the series - only two more issues to go! Johns talks about life, the universe and everything over at Newsarama.

The other one is Origins Of Siege, the prologue to next month's Avengers event Siege. Preview pages galore over at Comicbook Resources.

And that's your lot! Next week is business as usual with (more than two) new comics hitting the shelves on Thursday despite the bank holiday.

Happy New Year!

Due To Arrive 31/12/09

No new comics next week apart from Blackest Night #6 and Origin of Siege, folks! The Gosh! Sale will start on the 28th of December so it’s still worth making the trip if you can - there’ll be loads of recent hardcovers going for half price and anything else we felt like throwing into the mix.

The Gosh! Authority 23/12/09

Considering New Comics Day is also Christmas Eve we were hoping those ol’ comics publishers would be gentle with us and make it a nice easy week. Unfortunately for us they were only thinking of you lot and have thus landed us with a huge truckload of stuff, so there’s no way you’re going to run out of things to read over Christmas and get stuck watching Showboat for the 47th time. You’ll also get to see the ghosts of Gosh! past and scoff the remaining chocolates on the counter so it’ll probably be a good day all round. Don’t forget we shut at 4pm so get in early if you’d like to see our cheery faces.

So here’s what we’ve got:

Eric Powell begins his first new creator-owned series since The Goon with Chimichanga #1 (of 3), a story about a bearded girl, a rubbish travelling circus (see Randy – the man with the strength of a slightly larger man or Esmerelda and her amazing two-eyed goat) and a pet monster. It’s a quirky tale with a Goon-like atmosphere, kid-safe but not just for kids, says Powell. Previews are non-existent for this one so you’ll just have to wait ‘til Thursday. Speaking of Powell, his original Goon graphic novel Chinatown & The Mystery Of Mr. Wicker is finally out in softcover this week.

The lovely Christian Ward and Nathan Edmondson’s Olympus is collected in trade-paperback so if you missed it the first time round you can give it a go over Christmas. Edmondson talks about it with CBR where you’ll also find a bunch of preview pages.

Rick Remender’s got a pile of stuff out including Last Days of American Crime #1, the first of a three part series about a terrifying not-too-distant future. “At its heart it's a classic heist story with touches of science fiction and socio-political business around the perimeter of it. The story takes place in America eight or nine years in the future where a few spats of domestic terrorism have caused a spike in public paranoia,” says Remender.

“In this climate the U.S. Government, in secret, has been developing a broadcast that neurochemically inhibits anybody within the range of the broadcast from doing anything they know to be unlawful. Their response is to seize every radio tower in the country, broadcast this beam and no more crime, no more illegal activity, no more jay-walking, no more anything.” But there are two weeks to go until that happens and it’s the last chance for everyone to get their yah-yahs out. There are loads of interviews for you to read and a preview too.

Garth Ennis’ war stories continue with Battlefields: Happy Valley #1, a three-parter about an Australian member of the British bomber crew in 1942. Ennis talks about it here and the artist Paul Jason “PJ” Holden gets his turn too.

Captain America: Who Will Wield the Shield? is a one-shot by Ed Brubaker which will see the shield returned to Steve Rogers or left with Bucky Barnes. Or maybe they’ll share it, with Bucky having it on weekends and every other Friday. Have a preview.

Andrew is very excited about the More Than Complete Action Philosophers! TP which is pretty much what it says on the tin plus four all-new stories that you won’t find anywhere else. Fred Van Lente talks about how it all began in this interview. Supergirl Cosmic Adventures in the Eighth Grade TP comes highly recommended by Andrew too. It was a six-issue all-ages miniseries and you can see a preview of #1 here. Ridiculously good fun.

Mike Mignola and Richard Corben give you another one-shot Hellboy collaboration a year after their Hellboy: The Crooked Man. Hellboy: Bride of Hell sees a nineteen-year-old girl kidnapped in order to be offered to Asmodeus, King of Demons. But Hellboy’s here to make it all better. Preview!

And finally, this week sees the release of the 300th issue of the Comics Journal! There’s loads of stuff in this one which is probably just as well because it’ll take you a week to read it and you won’t notice the lack of comics on New Year’s Eve (I’ll get to that in a second). It’s a collection of interviews by creators with creators – the idea is that an established, influential type talks with a rising-star type and they print the results. So you’ll get Kevin Huizenga/Art Spiegelman, Zak Sally/Jaime Hernandez, Frank Quitely/Dave Gibbons, Alison Bechdel/Danica Novgorodoff, Denny O’Neil/Matt Fraction, Hitchcock/Truffaut (maybe not) and more. David Mazzucchelli talks with Dash Shaw (Bottomless Belly Button) and you can read a bit of it here.

Right, so next week: No comics are shipping except for Blackest Night #6 and Origin of Siege. But there’s still a reason to get off your post-Christmas arse and that reason is the Gosh! sale! From the 28th of December you’ll find loads of recent hardcovers going for half price or more, plus a whole heap of other books we felt like throwing into the mix. No tat here, it’ll be worth the trip, with fresh stock added regularly. Look for the sale sign!

Probably won’t be a mail-out next week, what with there being no comics to talk about and all, so I’ll see you in two weeks.

Merry Christmas, Bedford Falls!

Fat Freddy's Cat Omnibus Bookplate Edition - Exclusive to Gosh!

That's right folks, it's another Gosh! Bookplate Edition! This time Fat Freddy's Cat gets the special treatment with a signed and numbered bookplate featuring all new art by Gilbert Shelton himself. There's only 200 of these around and they're already marching out the door so grab one while you still can. Keed Spills!

Fat Freddy’s Cat originally began as a footnote to the now iconic Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers misadventures but very quickly became enormously popular in his own right. Bringing feline logic to the tie-dyed, drug-flushin’ world of the Freak Brothers, the Cat can be seen sleeping on Fat Freddy’s head, battling endless armies of roaches, travelling to Mexico, saving the world from an alien invasion and (of course) the Hee Hee Hee drug.

“Gilbert Shelton is as near as comics have come to producing a natural comedic genius of the same stature as a Chaplin or a Tati. With the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers he has created a hilarious and unlikely sibling trio as timeless in their appeal as the Marx Brothers. He is truly one of the greatest and most sublimely funny talents that the comic medium has to offer.”
Alan Moore

The Gosh! Authority 16/12/09

Blimey! It’s snowing! It’s also a week ‘til Christmas and this one’s arrived just in time if you’ve blanked on what to get people and have decided to give them stuff you want so you can borrow it off them in January: The Rocketeer Complete Collection is the entire long out-of-print saga of Cliff Secord and his mysterious jet pack in one fancy definitive hardcover. It’s all re-coloured by Laura Martin who was chosen by Dave Stevens before he died (she talks about it over at Comicbook Resources) so the 1930s look extra shiny.

More classic stuff of a considerably grimmer variety is collected in the Tomb of Dracula Omnibus Volume 2. There’s over 800 pages of fang and Transylvanian demonic nonsense from the likes of Marv Wolfman, Steve Englehart, David Kraft, Gene Colan, Tom Palmer and Virgilio Redondo for you to peruse while scoffing your mince pies and waiting for a Morecambe & Wise special.

It’s an odd one to follow but I’ll stick it here anyway: Marc Ellerby popped in earlier this week to load our shelves with his self-published comics. We’ve now got more of the first issue of Chloe Noonan plus the brand-spanking #2 which is a few pennies more expensive than the last but considerably bigger and beefier. You’ll also find all three volumes of his autobiographical Ellerbisms which are about all sorts of things. All in all, they’re the best looking small press things around and more than worth their measly cover price. He’s redoing his website at the mo so it’s temporarily stripped down to the bare essentials but you’ll still find links to previews and stuff.

Mark Waid’s Incorruptible #1 is hot on the tails of his smash hit series Irredeemable, a study of caped morality at the end of the world. This series sees the irredeemable Max Damage attempt to turn over a new leaf after witnessing the Plutonian’s worldwide destruction and starts by changing his name to Max Danger. There’s a preview of it here.

The Next Issue Project is the series that sees top modern comics creators draw and write what they imagine would be the next issue of classic cancelled titles from the 1930s-1950s. You saw the first one in February of last year which featured Joe Casey, Erik Larsen, Mike Allred, Kyle Baker, Frank Cho, Bill Sienkiewicz, Howard Chaykin, Steve Niles, Phil Hester, Jay Faerber, Steve Gerber, and Jim Valentino. Pages from that one are still banging about on the web if you missed ‘em and there’s a review too. In the latest issue you’ll find Erik Larson (him again), Paul Grist, Steve Horton, and Michael T. Gilbert paying homage to the Golden Age greats. Comixology have five lovely looking preview pages for you.

It’s a smallish week so that’s about it comic-wise, but there is one last bit of news. Thunderbolts #139 is the first of a two-part story written by Jeff Parker starring Agents of Atlas. Parker’s taken over the Thunderbolts writing job so you can expect more from him.

Lastly, Alex Fitch has a few interesting bits in his bag of Panel Borders podcasts. First up you can find Reinhard Kleist talking about his graphic novel Johnny Cash: I See a Darkness (of which we still have a few bookplate editions if you’ve still got presents to buy for Cash fans), then you can hear Logicomix author Apostolos Doxiadis talking smart about all sorts of things, and finally you can catch the last in Fitch’s series on British Mavericks - graphic designer Rian Hughes. He’s on there talking about the early days of small press and beyond. Have a poke around on the Panel Borders site. I’m sure you’ll find lots of stuff I’ve missed.

Christmas Opening Times! Business as usual except for a few funny ones: Christmas Eve (which is also New Comics Day) we’re open 10-4pm. Closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. New Year’s Eve we’re open 10-4pm and closed on New Year’s Day.

That’s all folks.

The Gosh! Authority 09/12/09

We were already looking forward to the second instalment of Ian Edginton and Ian Culbard’s Sherlock Holmes series but its arrival is even more exciting because we’re the only ones* who have it. Well, until January at least when it gets a general release. In the meantime, if you want to read A Study in Scarlet over your Christmas break you’ll find it here in Gosh! right next to the Hound of the Baskervilles Bookplate Edition. They’re lovely looking books and you can see bits and pieces of art over at Culbard’s blog.

*Sort of. Just us and the Sherlock Holmes Museum on Baker Street.

The enigmatic Steve Ditko’s rarest stories and original art are presented in one neat package this week called The Art of Steve Ditko. It’s an oversized hardcover featuring little-known full colour stories and unpublished work, plus essays by the likes of P. Craig Russell (Sandman: The Dream Hunters), John Romita (who took on Amazing Spider-Man after Ditko abruptly left Marvel), and Jerry Robinson, along with an introduction by Stan Lee. Head over to editor Craig Yoe’s site for a few preview pages and whatnot. Looks like it’ll be a good’un.

James Kochalka (whose American Elf daily strip is astonishingly still going, free every day over at his site, bookmark it!) is not only a comicbook artist he’s a rock ‘n’ roll superstar too – which means that for the second week in a row we’re going to have something that isn’t a book on our new release shelf.

His previous albums – James Kochalka Superstar, Monkey Vs Robot, Don’t Trust Whitey, and more – would always find their way into the five-disc rotation on my family home’s CD player and stay there for months. They’re funny and rude and absurd and his new one probably even more so. All fifteen songs on Digital Elf are in an 8-bit chiptune style composed on his GameBoy Advance. You can hear some of it over here.

The second issue of No Brow has arrived. You remember #1: Gods & Monsters, don’t you?. The East London based publication chose the jungle as their theme this time round and it’s once again limited to a print run of only 3000. The line-up include the likes of Marc Boutavent, Henning Wagenbreth, Blexbolex, Pietari Posti, Paul Blow, Eda Akaltun, Jon Boam, Jack Teagle, Martin Ontiveros and Sroop Sunar. Preview pages and all sorts are over at No Brow’s new website because unlike us, they’ve outgrown Blogger. Fancy that.

Ctrl.Alt.Shift Unmasks Corruption is a limited edition comic book anthology that hopes to awake a new generation of political activists with their tales of social injustice by big name folk like Dave McKean.

They had an art exhibition recently as part of Comica (I mentioned it back when it was about to start) and interviewed Joe Sacco as part of their project too. Other creators in the book include Peter Kuper, Lee O'Connor, Pat Mills, V V Brown, Dan Goldman, Aleksandar Zograf, Bryan Talbot, Asia Alfasi, Dylan Horrocks and Marcus Bleasdale. It’s probably very limited so grab one while it’s here. Previews over at the Comica site.

A fancy-looking manga came in this week that we reckon is going to be pretty popular:

GoGo Monster by Taiyō Matsumoto (otherwise known as the bloke who did Tekkon Kinkreet) is about a young kid who can see and talk to the supernatural beings who are bringing chaos to the world around him – but no one believes him when he talks about it. Here’s a review of the book by someone who is as impressed with the presentation of it as we are: it’s a glorious slipcased hardcover thing with the pages dyed red on the edges just like those Twilight books everyone’s got their noses in on the tube.

There’s more magic, monsters and gods in Michael Avon Oeming’s God Complex #1 about a guy called Paul who’s actually Apollo, son of Zeus and god of all sorts of things. Oeming, who co-writes the series with Dan Berman and provides the cover art (innards illustrated by newbie John Broglia), is interviewed by CbR and says…

"Apollo, now calling himself Paul, has stepped down from the board of gods who run a giant corporation called KRONOS and he ends up washing dishes in Little Italy. Our plan is to complement traditional mythology but with new twists. Apollo/Paul is a great hero and, like Walker from Powers, has lived for a very, very long time, so defining this kind of hero will be lots of fun. The gods get pretty pissed at him for leaving the Pantheon and send a crap-load of curses at him, hoping he will revert to his godliness to save himself and those he loves."

Preview here.

There’s a new ten-part series starting this Thursday by the Eisner award-winning twins Gabriel Bá (Umbrella Academy) and Fábio Moon (Casanova) that’s shaping up to be something rather special:

Set in their native Brazil, it’s a comic about quiet moments and big questions. Moon says the central theme of the whole thing is that “…Any day can be the most important day of your life. Any given day, something can happen that will change your life. Any given day, you can meet someone and your life will never be the same. This is your life, one day at a time. Make it count.” More of that and preview pages over at CbR.

Tank Girl fans are in for a treat this week too. Tank Girl: Dark Nuggets is a one-shot collection of short stories that artist Rufus Dayglo says are slightly darker in tone than Visions of Booga or Tank Girl: Skidmarks. There’s an interview with him and preview pages galore over at the ever reliable CbR.

And last of all, if you’ve been following B.P.R.D War on Frogs you’ll get your conclusion in the fourth and final issue (preview) . And if you’re a Fred Van Lente fan make sure you grab yourself a copy of the new X-Men Noir series Mark of Cain #1, a four-parter illustrated by Dennis Calero. Preview’s this way.

That’s it for another week. Don’t forget about the Duncan Fegredo exhibition in the shop – it won’t be around for much longer so if you were thinking of bagging yourself some original Hellboy art do it now, fer chrissakes.

Feast your eyes on these!

However, there is hope: everything before #5 is with art dealer Mark Hay and everything after that is at home with Fegredo himself (who would like to hold on to some of it). The Gosh! Authority 02/12/09

Cold December hellos to you!

One of our favourites this week is Walt Disney’s Peter Pan HC as illustrated by the brilliant Mary Blair. Blair worked at Disney for over 34 years defining the look of what are now classic films like Alice in Wonderland and Cinderella. Her illustrations for those are already out in a hardcover picture book and we’ve got ‘em on the shelf in the shop if you missed them before. Unlike other artists whose work was transferred faithfully to the screen Blair’s served more as an inspiration than a final design. You can see what I mean in this Flickr set. It’s a great looking children’s book rather than a film making-of thing and it’s very nice indeed.

Another one that arrived earlier is Bob Dylan Revisited HC, a collection of thirteen graphic interpretations of Bob Dylan’s songs. Loads of artists pop up in here either interpreting his lyrics or illustrating them as they come. Dave McKean does Desolation Row and it’s weird, full-colour (as they all are) and very McKeany, and Lorenzo Mattotti does A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall.

For the first time in fifteen years you can bag yourself some brand new Beanworld. Larry Marder’s Beanworld HC Volume 3: Remember Here When You Are There! completes the Springtime stories in which Beanworld harmony is interrupted. Marder’s been keeping a blog of late and if you head over there you’ll see a page of his convention sketchbook scribbled on by Neil Gaiman who was told to draw something bean-related (enter Sandbean). Anyway, the new book’s here, undoubtedly peculiar and probably very funny. March doubletime to the preview, chow sol’jers!

On the subject of peculiar, read Binky Brown Meets the Holy Virgin Mary. Art Spiegelman said he would never have done the autobiographical, Pulitzer prize-winning Maus had Justin Green not done it first. In 1972 Green wrote and illustrated Binky Brown Meets the Holy Virgin Mary – the first long autobiographical work in underground comics – in which Binky Brown (Green’s alter ego) struggles with Catholic guilt, his then undiagnosed OCD and the crippling fear that rays of energy emanating from his nether regions will strike a picture of the Virgin Mary. It’s a classic of sorts and it goes without saying that Robert Crumb’s a fan. The original comic’s long out of print and for the last decade or so it has only been available as part of the Binky Brown Sampler from Last Gasp. Grab an oversized hardcover copy this week courtesy of McSweeney’s.

One Model Nation is a graphic novel written by actor/musician Donovan Leitch and Courtney Taylor-Taylor (or C. Allbritton Taylor as the cover would have it) of the Dandy Warhols about a made up band a bit like Kraftwerk. In this alternate version of late 70s Berlin One Model Nation kick started the revolution before mysteriously disappearing a few months later. There’s a long interview with Leitch over here where he explains it much better than I did along with a few preview pages illustrated by Jim Rugg (Street Angel).

In a rare occurrence this week we’ll have a DVD on our new release shelves:

Drawing Between the Lines
is a short documentary about Jeffrey Brown and his candid approach to storytelling. It’s only 20 minutes long but there’s 55 minutes of bonus material (whatever that may be) to make it seem like a proper DVD. What’d Brown think about it all? “It was weird. I mean, it’s weird enough reading about myself, but watching myself talk about myself drawing stories about myself is even weirder.” More of that here.

If you’ve been collecting the latest Popeye collections you’ll be hauling another big one home this week. Popeye HC Volume 4 Plunder Island collects the epic Sunday-continuity story that ran for a full eight months, featuring the horrible Sea Hag and her sidekick the Goon. As with the previous volumes it’s all reproduced in lovely full colour. Fantagraphics have provided you with a 15-page PDF preview but it’s a sizable 7MB so mind how you go.

Pope Hats #1 is a handsome looking debut from Ethan Riley and the most impressive debut in years according to Seth (It’s a Good Life if You Don’t Weaken). It’s one of those where young people sit around talking about nothing and everything and this reviewer reckons there’s plenty of room for another comic about whining, aimless youth.

In the other kind of comics this week you’ll see two new Blackest Night miniseries kick off with Blackest Night The Flash #1 (of 3) by Geoff Johns and Scott Kolins (preview here) and Blackest Night Wonder Woman #1 (of 3) by Greg Rucka and Nicola Scott (preview). The Fall of the Hulks begins with Fall of the Hulks: Alpha, a one-shot by Jeff Parker (Agents of Atlas) and Paul Pelletier (War of Kings). Here’s yer checklist – you can cross the first one off.

This week you’ll also get the first Dark Avengers Annual by Brian Michael Bendis who says all sorts of things about it over at CbR. It’s illustrated by Chris Bachalo and you can see preview pages here. BendisSiege: The Cabal One-Shot is out too, setting the stage for next month’s big Siege event. Don’t miss it if you’re planning on following that one.

Also on the racks is an Empowered One-Shot by Adam Warren that you might fancy. He talked about the series with CbR back in June but the only mention this one-shot got was a small maybe because it hadn’t happened yet. I’ll send you that way anyway as a recap or something but it’s probably old news to most of you.

Gosh! Favourite Darwyn Cooke illustrates the 50th issue of Jonah Hex – a double-sized anniversary extravaganza. He talks about it at his almost-blog here and from the preview pages it looks like it’s going to be a good’un.

And finally, Jason Pearson illustrates the X-Force Annual (preview here) so if you’re a Body Bags fan you’ll be wanting it.

In other news, if you’d like to win an autographed copy of Michael Kupperman’s Tales Designed to Thrizzle then get yourself over to the website of Patrick Wensink, author of Sex Dungeon For Sale! He’s holding a colouring contest in celebration of the release of said book and you can pick from three images to scribble on. Jesus toast?
