The Gosh! Authority 28/10/09
This just in! Really. I’m typing this only moments hauling dozens of boxes of Eddie Campbell’s Alec: The Years Have Pants down the precarious spiral staircase of Gosh! Campbell’s Pants are enormous and he hasn’t even seen them yet because he’s probably on a plane to Italy. Thicker than From Hell, they come in both hardcover and soft and are among the best designed books I’ve seen come through the door. The stuff inside’s pretty good too. Don’t forget he’s signing here next week and later that night you can see him in conversation at the ICA with comedian Arnold Brown.
R. Crumb’s epic Book of Genesis is finally sitting on our new release shelf after years of anticipation. All 50 chapters with ‘NOTHING LEFT OUT!’ make up the 244 pages, all painstakingly drawn in classic big-assed Crumb style. He originally began it as a satirical Adam and Eve story but quickly realised it was bizarre enough to be done unabridged and took it on as a straight illustration job.
"To take this as a sacred text, or the word of God or something to live by, is kind of crazy. So much of it makes no sense. To think of all the fighting and killing that's gone on over this book, it just became to me a colossal absurdity. That's probably the most profound moment I've had — the absurdity of it all."
It took him years. "I got totally sick of it by the end of it. I've come out exhausted. I may never draw again,” he says. Eddie Campbell (him again) picked up a copy recently and blogged about it, rounding up quotes from all over. A bad word can’t be found among them.
UK comic creators Glenn Dakin and Phil Elliot have a new collection out of The Rockpool Files: The Adventures of Mr. Crusht Acean and it’s delightful nutty. According to this thing on CbR it came about while Dakin and Elliot were walking along the beach at Folkstone...
They'd just finished eating a bowl of shrimp when Glenn suddenly screamed, "Oh, no! Do you realize that we've just eaten a bowl of sentient creatures, capable of deep and profound thoughts?"
"Shrimps are on the lowest rung of intelligent life," replied Phil. "Besides, crabs are far more perceptive, but that didn't stop you from tucking into that crab bisque you had at lunchtime. Why, I'd wager a crab could solve a crime as easily as Sherlock Holmes."
"That's it," said Glenn. "From now on I'm no longer going to eat crabs but will instead write mysterious, funny and downright odd stories about them." "And I'll draw them!" said Phil.
Incidentally, if you’ve never read Dakin’s Abe: Wrong for all the Right Reasons (now oddly out of print) track down a copy and read it. You’ll like it.
Danica Novgorodoff’s Slow Storm is a favourite here at Gosh! so we’re glad to see another one on the shelves. Her graphic novel Refresh Refresh is based on a short story by Benjamin Percy (still online at The Paris Review) about three boys in a small Oregon town whose fathers are off fighting the war in Iraq. CbR have an interview and a bunch of preview pages up, lovely colours and all. Novgorodoff pops up on the First Second blog, and Bookslut review it and love it.
P. Craig Russell’s Sandman: The Dream Hunters HC collects all four issues of the comics adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s 1999 novella about a young monk and a shape-changing fox. If you missed it as it was coming out go have a read of this interview with Russell and have a look at some of the pages from what this reviewer calls ‘one of the most beautiful comics you’ll see all year’.
In comics this week we’ve got a new Groo miniseries from Mark Evanier and Sergio Aragones which sees The Hogs of Horder control the villagers’ minds, bodies, and money – can the inept Groo save the day? Their last miniseries was nominated for an Eisner so chances are this’ll be pretty good. Preview here.
Another new series starting this week is The Talisman, a comicbook adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Straub’s 1984 bestseller adapted by Robin Furth (of the Dark Tower series) and illustrated by Tony Shasteen (Occult Crimes Taskforce). The Road of Trials is the first of four six-issue miniseries about teenager Jack Sawyer who tries to save his dying mother by retrieving a magical talisman. If that sounds like your cup of tea you can see twelve (!) preview pages over at Entertainment Weekly.
Norman Osborn’s power-mad nonsense continues in Marvel’s Dark Reign: The List this week with two one-shots by big name creators. Dark Reign: The List: Punisher is illustrated by John Romita Jr. and written by Rick Remender who talks to Newsarama about the whole thing and points out that regular readers of Punisher won’t want to miss it because various story arcs have been building up to this one-off story. Andrew’s favourite Jason Aaron (Wolverine, Scalped) writes Dark Reign: The List: Wolverine (another one) and talks about it here. Esad Ribic does the pictures!
Marvel’s big X-Necrosha thing starts with a big one-shot called appropriately enough X-Necrosha One-Shot, in which the writers of X-Force, X-Men Legacy, and New Mutants (Chris Yost, Craig Kyle, Mike Carey, and Zeb Wells respectively) tell three stories that will then spin-off into their own appropriate series. They’ll tell you about it here. Thursday’s New Mutants #6 is also involved in all this so don’t miss that.
In other news, London Libraries are running a competition to win £100 of books from us at Gosh! plus a pair of tickets for events at this year’s Comica Festival at the ICA. Events include talks from the likes of Kevin O’Neill, James Jean and loads more. All you have to do is answer one simple question on this page here.
And finally, the lovely Tom Gauld (Gigantic Robot) tweets excitedly about Chris Ware’s cover to The New Yorker! It looks cracking, as does the comic on the inside.
As a wee blog bonus, here's a page from the Campbell's new Alec collection, originally printed in The Dance of Lifey Death. (Each tier enlarges separately)

And I’m done. Go out there and get yer bawbaw.

The Gosh! Authority 21/10/09
There’s just one blog extra to round up before I get onto the comics so here it comes: Eddie Campbell (he of From Hell, Bacchus, Alec fame) is signing here in the Gosh! basement on the 7th of November and I for one can’t feckin’ wait. Mark it in your diaries and make sure you’re there because it probably won’t happen again for ages – he lives in Australia and if any of you have endured that godforsaken plane journey you’ll understand why he delights in avoiding such nonsense.
Inside Woody Allen was a comic strip syndicated daily by King Features around the time Woody Allen was still brilliant (circa Annie Hall, Manhattan). It was all about his neuroses, angst, life philosophy, frequent psychiatric treatment, the lot. Dread & Superficiality : Woody Allen as Comic Strip is a lovely looking hardcover book collecting the very best of the classic strip which was drawn by Joe Marthen for a year and then taken over by Stuart Hample (a self-diagnosed chronic self-doubter and multi-media failure), who continued until its end in ’84. The book has well over 200 strips reproduced from the original art, plus sketches, photographs, a new preface from Hample and all sorts of developmental miscellany.
After big hit gritty crime comics like like Brubaker’s Criminal or Cooke’s The Hunter it probably won’t surprise you that there are more private dicks and femmes fatales in store for noir fans.
This week Dark Horse release Noir, a trade-paperback crime anthology that’s been in the pipeline for a very long time – understandably so, when you see the list of creators that editor Diana Shutz had to wrangle: Brian Azzarello (100 Bullets), Ed Brubaker (Criminal, Sleeper, Incognito), David Lapham (doing a Stray Bullets story!), Rick Geary (Treasury of Victorian Murder), Chris Offutt (HBO’s True Blood), Paul Grist (doing a new Kane strip!), Jeff Lemire (Essex County Trilogy, Sweet Tooth), M.K. Perker (Cairo, Air), the Fillbäch Brothers (Maxwell Strangewell), Alex de Campi (Smoke), Sean Phillips (Criminal), Eduardo Barreto (Cobb), Gabriel Bá (Umbrella Academy) Fábio Moon (Sugarshock), and Dean Motter (Mister X). Here’s an early review from someone who hopes there’s another volume in the post, and over at Publishers Weekly there’s a preview of stories by Grist, Lemire and Motter.
Fabio Moon turns up again in the Joss Whedon penned Sugarshock, a one-shot Eisner-winning story that originally appeared in the online issues of MySpace Dark Horse Presents. Moon talks about it here where there are also a few preview pages too.
Garth Ennis’ acclaimed war stories from Dynamite are now strung together in one, big hardcover. The Night Witches, Dear Billy and Tankies are all here together with sketches from artists Russ Braun, Peter Snejbjerg, and Carlos Ezquerra, commentary from Ennis and a complete cover gallery from John Cassaday and Garry Leach. It’s a far cry from his recent Herogasm, I can tell you. He says “I can't deny that I write these stories largely because of my own fascination with the war genre, and hopefully some of my enjoyment will come through for the reader. I certainly feel like Battlefields represents my A-game right now, the very best that I'm capable of. But beyond that, I'm hoping to keep alive some stories that might otherwise fade from the world that might disappear along with the men and women who lived them. If nothing else, stories like The Tankies and The Night Witches are a chance to acknowledge the courage of some pretty exceptional people.” More of that year-old interview here.
Nexus: Space Opera by Steve Rude (The Dude) is the mini-series that heralded the return of the legendary character Rude co-created with writer Mike Baron in the 1980s. If you ask Nat he’ll tell you Nexus is cool and worthy of a return. This trade collects all four Space Opera books (that’s Nexus 99-102) plus the 11-page painted story from Nexus 100. There’s an interview with The Dude from years ago over at Newsarama in which he sounds like a lovely chap and talks about getting Space Opera off the ground. You should buy his comics.
Last bits before I’m off: A few of the Duncan Fegredo Hellboy pages have already sold so if you’ve got your eye on anything you should let us know! Also, this weekend is the Fred Van Lente signing so locate your Amazing Spider-Man issues, Action Philosophers, Incredible Hercules and make sure you’re here on Saturday.

Eddie Campbell Signing at Gosh! Comics - Saturday 7th November
These days Eddie Campbell successfully avoids the grim greyness of London despite having been stuck drawing the bloody place for ten long years (see the burglar-stunning brick that is From Hell). Instead he can be found in his sunny house in Australia with a cat asleep on each foot, spouting opinions on the internet and most recently finishing off the behemoth that is Alec: The Years Have Pants - A Life-Sized Omnibus. He told CbR all about it last week.
Campbell’s a well known Scottish raconteur whose work has been likened to Jack Kerouac and Henry Miller. He’s probably best known for his Eisner-award winning collaboration with Big Hairy Alan Moore on the enormous From Hell I mentioned above, and also his own wine-drenched Bacchus. Pants collects his groundbreaking autobiographical work (a list of all the books included can be found on the Top Shelf website) plus a whole new book: thirty-five pages you haven’t seen before (check his blog for teaser panels). Moore turns up in it, as does Neil Gaiman and various other comics folk so it’s probably just as well they like it:
"Alec is magic, and even if I knew how all of it was done I'd be doing you a disservice if I pointed out the wires and mirrors. ... It is written by someone who obviously finds being alive an endless source of novelty and conundrum."
– Alan Moore
"Do you need me to tell you how good Eddie Campbell is? Or that Alec is probably the best book-length comic about art and wine and midlife crises and families and friends and wine and love and art and saying goodbye and terror there is?"
– Neil Gaiman
Campbell will be in the Gosh! basement signing and sketching from 2pm to 4pm on November the 7th. Printing delays have meant that his new Pants aren’t going to be out in time – but fear not, we’re having them shipped in especially for the event. Weighing in at a whopping 640 pages at least one thing can be said about it: it’s big and it’s thick.

The Gosh! Authority 14/10/09
While you were looking the other way yesterday we posted lots of exciting things on the Gosh! Blog. You might have missed ‘em but it’s nothing a quick scroll of the mouse can’t fix. Here’s a round-up:
The next signing date to mark in your diary is the 24th of October. He of Action Philosophers! and Comic Book Comics fame, Fred Van Lente, will be making a rare UK appearance in the Gosh! basement. He also writes Amazing Spider-Man, Marvel Zombies, and Incredible Hercules so be sure to bring all that stuff along to get scribbled on.
Upstairs we’ve got a wall of original Duncan Fegredo art for sale. Some pages come with an extra page of pencils and all of ‘em are from the recent Hellboy: The Wild Hunt. I’ve put scans and prices up over in this post here. Even if you can barely afford a packet of chocolate hobnobs you should get to the shop and marvel at the lack of Tipp-Ex.
Our growing list of Exclusive Bookplate Editions has expanded once more: In late November you’ll be able to get your hands on a copy of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ Incognito trade-paperback, complete with a signed and numbered Gosh! bookplate. All details and lovely pictures up here.
Over the weekend Bryan Talbot sat downstairs and happily signed away the afternoon. If you weren’t able to make it you’ll be glad to know we’ve got loads of copies of his brand new hardcover graphic novel Grandville (which he promises is the first in a series of several) signed by the man himself. You’ll find them centre-stage when you next walk in the door.
Of course if you don’t know what I’m talking about you should watch this book trailer and pretend you did all along.
There’s something by almost everyone in this week’s delivery because of the overriding feeling of anthologyness.
Liberty Comics #2: A CBLDF Benefit Book has dozens of notable names on board and here are some of them: Neil Gaiman and Jim Lee (preview pages here), Jimmy Palmiotti and Jim Rugg, Mike Allred, Ray Fawkes and Cameron Stewart, Brian Wood (his first new Channel Zero story in several years! Preview at The Beat), Ben McCool and Ben Templesmith, Dave Gibbons doing a Martha Washington thing, Paul Pope, Jason Aaron and loads more. Editor Jamie S. Rich tells you all about it here.
Just like last time, all proceeds from this comic go to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. Speaking of which, we’ve just received a bunch of flyers for a play based on the whole Mike Diana fiasco. Busted Jesus Comix plays at London’s Above the Stag theatre in November.
The House of Mystery Halloween Annual has a regular story by the in-House team of Matthew Sturges, Luca Rossi and Jose Marzan Jr along with several other short stories crammed into its 48 pages by this lot: Peter Milligan (Hellblazer, Greek Street), Giuseppe Camunculi (doing a Hellblazer story), Stefano Landini, Matt Wagner, Bill Willingham (doing a Merv Pumpkinhead thing), Mark Buckingham, Kevin Nowlan and more. If that’s not enough to tempt you there’s also a thing about Chris Roberson and Mike Allred’s upcoming series I, Zombie.
ACT-I-VATE Primer HC is another anthology featuring never-before-seen stuff by Dean Haspiel, Nick Bertozzi, Michael Cavallaro, Mike Dawson, Simon Fraser, Michel Fiffe, Tim Hamilton, Ulises Farinas, Leland Purvis, Joe Infurnari, Molly Crabapple, John Leavitt, Pedro Camargo, Jim Dougan, Hyeondo Park, Maurice Fontenot, Jennifer Hayden, and Roger Langridge.
The reliably brilliant Langridge (Fred the Clown) pops up again in The Muppet Show (TP and HC) which for silly legal reasons we couldn’t get as it was coming out issue by issue but we can have as many as we like now it’s a collection. It’s pretty much what it says on the tin only better. Here’s a review of #1.
Same story goes for Mark Waid’s The Incredibles series which is now sitting on our new release shelf. Waid talks about it here and here. Talking of Pixar, go see Up. But don’t wear mascara like what I did.
You are There HC is a graphic novel by Jaques Tardi, last mentioned here on the eve of the release of West Coast Blues.
You are There is one of the first graphic novels to be published in Europe and this is the first time it’s been available in English.
Punisher Frank Castle MAX #75 is worth a look this week not only because it’s illustrated by Gosh! Favourite Laurence Campbell but also because it’s twice as big as usual. You’ll find stuff by (this post seems a lot like an incredibly long credit sequence but I’m going to do it anyway) Charlie Huston, Ken Lashley, Peter Milligan, Tomm Coker, Gregg Hurwitz, Das Pastoras, Thomas Piccirilli and of course Campbell, plus an 8-page preview of Jason Aaron and Steve Dillon’s PunisherMAX #1. The internets provide you with a preview.
Deadpool #900 is a whopping 104-page special commemorating Deadpool’s 900th issue (which it isn’t). Deep breath, another role call: Jason Aaron, Mike Benson, Charlie Huston, Joe Kelly, Duane Swierczynski, Fred Van Lente (that man again), Kyle Baker, Shawn Crystal, Sanford Green, Rob Liefeld, Chris Staggs, and Dalibor Talijic. And what makes it extra news worthy is the lovely-looking Dave Johnson cover who sadly doesn’t get to do great things on the cover of 100 Bullets anymore. Here’s a preview and here’s all the creators sitting around talking about Deadpool. “The guy’s got mad weapons coming out of his ass. C'mon on!” says Benson.
That’s it for this week but there’s yet more wisdom to impart. Big Hairy Alan Moore is launching a new national magazine – the first underground magazine of the 21st century, so they say – called Dodgem Logic, published by the same chaps who brought you the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers and Fat Freddy’s Cat Omnibuses. Published every other month, it’s a 40-page full colour wossname about all sorts of things. The first issue features Kevin O'Neill, Savage Pencil, Graham Linehan and Josie Long, as well as two new pages of Mustard comedy stuff. You can read all about it here.
And lastly, here’s three bits of news from DC that you should know:
- The final issue of Wednesday Comics came out a couple of weeks ago and they’ve already unveiled plans for an enormous collection.
- When the Josh Brolin/Megan Fox/John Malkovich Jonah Hex film comes out next year you’ll also have an original Justin Gray/Jimmy Palmiotti/Tony DeZuniga Hex graphic novel to pick up on the way home from the cinema.
- The writers of Blackest Night aren’t just sticking to dead characters – they’re now dredging up old, cancelled series. I wonder what Eddie Campbell would have to say about that.

Fred Van Lente signing at Gosh! Saturday 24th October
In what’s becoming something of a routine these days we’ve got another signing in our lovely wee Gosh! basement. This time it’s Fred Van Lente in a rare UK appearance on Saturday 24th October, from 3pm-5pm, and we’re very excited to have him.
Van Lente, the award-winning writer of Action Philosophers!, Comic Book Comics, Amazing Spider-Man, Marvel Zombies and Incredible Hercules, among numerous other excellent titles, is one of the most exciting writing talents to emerge in the last five years. This will be his only London signing, so take advantage of this rare opportunity to chat with him about his experiences, from making his name on the wonderful Action Philosophers!, through to his current work at Marvel, including his position as one the “Spidey Brain Trust”.
Maybe Andrew will even wear his Plato Smash! T-shirt and we can all look on in quiet envy.
If you can’t make it down, but would like to get a copy of something signed, drop us a line or let someone in the store know.

Incognito TP Bookplate Edition - Exclusive to Gosh!
Here at Gosh! we’re big fans of anything Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips do – chances are you’ve asked for a recommendation and we’ve pointed you towards Criminal, their incredibly popular hard-bitten crime series (and so we should! It’s very good). In December their cracking six-issue miniseries Incognito is coming out in trade-paperback. If you missed it despite the umpteen printings here’s how Ed Brubaker describes it:
Incognito is a dark exploration into the nature of good, if that makes any sense. It's about a completely amoral guy with super-powers forced to pretend he's a normal law-abiding citizen, because he's in Witness Protection, and how that shapes what he becomes. It's also a brutal noir twist on the super-hero/super-villain genre that delves more into their roots in the pulps, and it's pretty over-the-top and action-packed.
We’ll have 200 exclusive Gosh! Bookplate Editions signed by Brubaker and Phillips going for the cover price of £13.50. We’ll warn you now they won’t hang around for long so get your reservations in, stat! Due late November.
