Hello all,
This is just a wee post to say that thanks to Bank Holiday Monday we won't be seeing next week's comics until Friday. Have a lovely day off and if you come in on Thursday you can tell us all about it. You'll have no comics to talk about, after all.

The Gosh! Authority 26/08/09
It’s a short one this week so you can gulp it down in one and get straight back to poking about on Facebook or whatever it is you do these days. I’ll tell you about this week’s delivery in a mo, but first off - an announcement!
This Autumn several good things will be happening. Being cooler, London will have stopped smelling of wee and down in Lewes they’ll be exploding popes. Here in Gosh! there will be many, many signings. We’ve got signings coming out the wazoo and we expect you to be at all of them. Or some of them. If you like people such as Joe Sacco (Palestine), Bryan Talbot (Alice in Sunderland), Eddie “Pa” Campbell (Alec, From Hell), or Fred Van Lente (Amazing Spider-Man, Action Philosophers) you’ll want to make your way to the nice, cosy Gosh! basement where you last saw Big Hairy Alan Moore eating chocolate Digestives. We’ll do proper blog posts with all the necessary information in the coming weeks plus Facebook events and whatnot so we can electronically prod you with reminders. Watch this space.
The latest Sparrow collection (the 12th if you’re counting) is packed full of the weird and lovely art of Italian cartoonist Sergio Toppi. Having not seen it yet I can’t say which bits have made it in, but Google images will give you some idea of what he’s about. Ashley Wood can’t wait for this one to arrive and says on his blog:
“There are a handful of artists that truly inspire and me make feel like a kid on Christmas morning every time I see their art, Frazetta, Jones, and Sergio Toppi... his supernatural line-work and his masterful compositions never fail to inspire and kick me in the ass and make me try harder.”
Wood’s also put up a few Toppi pages including one of those up there I’ve lazily purloined. I’ll admit it.
There’ll be more weird art in the best-named book on the shelf this week: Songs of the Black Worm Gism, an anthology of fiction and art inspired by HP Lovecraft. It’s a second volume of sorts following on from The Starry Wisdom by editor D.M. Mitchell. There’s stuff by Alan Moore (that cover you see to the side there), Grant Morrison, John Coulthart, David Britton and more. I call it an ‘anthology’ but Mitchell calls it“an illustrated brainstorm of visceral deep-sea dream currents, aberrant trans-species sex visions and frenzied ophidian entropy.” Blimey.
Andrew’s probable pick of the week would be the Ghost Rider: Trials & Tribulations trade-paperback which gives you more Jason Aaron/Tan Eng Huat craziness (but it’s doubtful there’ll be any trans-species sex). There’s a preview here of #33, the first issue in the book (it also collects #34, #35 and Annual #2), plus a review of the same.
Ever read Brandon Graham’s King City? Image are borrowing it off TokyoPop to re-release it in monthly issues – comic-sized, not manga-sized this time round, which Graham considers far preferable. They’ll be reprinting chapters of King City Vol 1 first and then move on to new stuff later on. Graham’s very excited by the idea of paying rent with money he’s made from comics, and who wouldn’t be? Check here for a preview.
Speaking of money from comics, Jonathan Cape and Comica have joined up with The Observer for a graphic short story competition.
If the judges – Joe Sacco (him again), Simone Lia (Fluffy), Rachel Cooke (The Observer), Dan Franklin (Publisher, Jonathan Cape), Paul Gravett (Man at the Crossroads, Comica), and Suzanne Dean (Random House’s Creative Director) – like your stuff, you could win a thousand quid and see your story in The Observer Magazine. Here are all the details you need.
And last of all, we’ve just received a bunch of Moebius books that aren’t usually available in the UK – Inside Moebius Volumes 2, 3, and 4. We’ve only got a couple of each so you’d better get in quick! We don’t know if we’ll be able to get them again.
That’s it for another week. See you Thursday.

The Gosh! Authority 19/08/09
Greetings Earthlings. I’m back for another instalment of Stuff We Think You’d Like. It’s somewhat slim pickings this week but as always there are a few bits worthy of a mention, like Jeff Lemire’s (The Nobody) Essex County Trilogy – that’s Tales From the Farm, Ghost Stories, and The Country Nurse – which are collected in both soft and hardcover this week. They’re two lovely-looking editions from Top Shelf which not only have the stuff you’ve seen before but added bonus material like sketches, promo art and two new stories Lemire had previously done as 15-page mini-comics. If you like his old stuff you’ll want to make sure his new series from Vertigo is on your order too: Sweet Tooth isn’t out until September but you can read all about it at Newsarama in the meantime.
Speaking of Vertigo, their new Vertigo Crime line launches this Thursday! Each original graphic novel in the series will be a black and white, digest-sized hardback with a cover by Joker artist Lee Bermejo. Bermejo’s partner in Joker crime Brian Azzarello (of the late 100 Bullets) teams up with Victor Santos (Young Ronin) for Filthy Rich, a pulp noir tale about a former sports hero with a gambling problem mixing with the wrong crowd and the wrong girl. If it sounds like old hat cliche to you, you might agree with this reviewer who said “You can not over-state the smug stupidity of this graphic novel.” Or, you might lean towards a more favourable take on it: “...reading Filthy Rich probably won't open any new doors for you, but then, isn't that why noir is its own genre to begin with? Azzarello provides all the facets of a great noir tale, and excels at them. Fans will likely be able to guess who betrays who, and in what order, but ultimately, that winds up being part of the fun.”
The other of the two is Ian Rankin’s Dark Entries featuring ol’ John Constantine. Rankin’s foray into comics caused something of a slinging match over at the Eddie Campbell blogspot some time back, but despite all that Bookslut think it’s an enjoyable read. If you’re in Edinburgh this week you can see Rankin on stage with Neil Gaiman where they’ll be discussing comics and themselves.
Punisher’s also jumping on the noir bandwagon this week with Punisher Noir #1, the first of four issues by Frank Tieri and Paul Azaceta which sees Punisher kicking arse and taking names in the Roaring Twenties. There’s an interview with Tieri at Newsarama and a few preview pages courtesy of Fanboy.com.
If you’re an Alan Moore fan you’ll want to get your mitts on DC’s latest Absolute Edition V For Vendetta. Having been around for twenty-odd years we all know what it’s about so I’ll spare you the recap. This heavy block of a book sports the colouring previously seen in the 2005 hardcover edition only it’s bigger which does indeed make it better. “On the subject of big hardcovers,” says a blogger struggling for a segue, the second volume of Eerie Archives has also arrived on our busy doorstep and will probably be found somewhere near V on account of its size. It’s a year’s worth of 1960s eerie classics from Gene Colan, Steve Ditko, Gray Morror, Neal Adams, and Frank Frazetta.
Andrew’s very excited to see Guy Davis’ (BPRD) late ‘90s series Marquis collected in trade paperback. The first volume Inferno is out this Thursday collecting the first two major stories Danse Macabre and Intermezzo along with an expanded sketchbook section and full-colour cover gallery by Matt Wagner, Mike Mignola, Teddy Kristensen, Kelly Jones, Charles Vess and Michael Gaydos. Davis talks about it at CbR and there’s a preview here if you’ve never seen this thing before.
If you were drawn in by the freebie Viking #1 piggybacked by Walking Dead #64 last week you can pick up the third coloured issue on Thursday. And if you’re a rabid Jason Aaron fan like Andrew you’ll no doubt be excited to know that Wolverine Weapon X #4 is out, giving you another dose of Adamantium Men. In our Blackest Night range we’ve got more grim doings in Blackest Night Superman #1 (of 3) which has something to do with Pa Kent’s grave. And in Daredevil #500, Ed Brubaker and Michael Lark end their popular run on the series. It’ll be interesting to see how they leave it for the next creative team of Andy Diggle and Roberto De La Torre who’ll be doing #501 some time in October. Click here for a preview.
And apart from Ross Campbell’s Wet Moon Volume 5 (preview!) there’s not much else to add.
See you Thursday!
-- Hayley.

The Gosh! Authority 12/08/09
Hello campers!
Hayley is feeling a wee bit poorly this week, so you’ve got me to jaw on a bit this week. Don’t worry, I’ll make it quick and painless.
As you’re no doubt aware by now, our Darwyn Cooke bookplates have arrived! The fully assembled, signed, limited bookplate editions of Parker: The Hunter are now on our shelves and selling fast. Seriously, as of writing there are only around 50 left, so get in quick! If it helps at all: the book is bloody great.
Locas is the name of Jaime Hernandez’ (aka “The Instantly Accessible One”) world of stories revolving around ex-mechanic Maggie, punk rocker Hopey and an eclectic, ever-expanding cast of Los Angelenos. Following from the finale of the first Locas volume, Locas Volume 2: Maggie, Hopey & Ray collects the post L&R Vol 1 stories, including the sublime one-two of “Ghost of Hoppers” and “Frogmouth”. Unfortunately, like the second Luba volume, they seem to have ditched the great format of the first bumper hardcover. Still, it’s classic, must-have work, whatever way you package it.
David Tischman returns to comics with a new series from Wildstorm this week. Red Herring is a conspiracy-driven satire, as erstwhile shopaholic Maggie MacGuffin (yes, really) is drawn into the world of Red Herring, an obsessive nutcase. Or is he? Highjinks would appear to ensue as a secret organisation in Washington DC tries to cover up an imminent alien invasion. Or does it? (Yes, it probably does.) Anyway, it looks fairly entertaining but the real drawcard is the presence of none other than Phillip Bond, up near the top of the Gosh list of Artists Who Should Really Do More. Do yourself a favour and check it out.
Speaking of things to give a chance, fans of cosmic weirdness, most especially that epitomised by the wonderful Godland, should pick up the first Charlatan Ball trade paperback by Joe Casey and animator Andy Suriano. The titular character is a low-rent stage magician who is sucked into another dimension, and a tournament of battling wizards. What at first seems like a case of mistaken identity turns out instead to be a nefarious plan hatched by evil genius Demon Empty. Insane fun.
A few big trades out this week. First up is Fables Vol 12: The Dark Age. Really, it’s Fables: The Post-War Years, as we examine the aftermath of the previous volume. Deals are made, unwelcome visitors and shown about, the messy aftermath of war is addressed and two characters whom Fritz Leiber may have recognised unearth an ancient power that sets us up for the new direction of the series.
Meanwhile, in Walking Dead Vol 10: Everybody’s Happy, Rick and Carl have a lovely picnic out in a sunny meadow, while Dale & Andrea have a simply delightful wedding with delicious canapes. The volume concludes with a party, at which Sophia plays an hilarious practical joke on Michonne, who laughs and laughs and laughs. Oh, okay, it’s called What We Become, and people die. Like, a few people. And not nicely. As always, it’s brilliant.
Invincible has a new collection out as well, number 11 to be precise. It is actually called Happy Days, and it’s all about dating and romance and beating up the Astounding Wolf-Man. Also brilliant, if you like that kind of thing.
Last thing Kirkman: similar to his classy decision last month to include a B&W version of Chew #1 as a flipbook to Walking Dead #63 at no extra charge (which we still have a couple of copies of), this month he’s done the same with Viking #1. That’s a black and white, slightly shrunk down version of the excellent new series’ first issue at no extra cost! Not bad, eh?
Speaking of death and misery: Geoff Johns.
That is to say, Geoff Johns is back to his tricks this week, with Blackest Night #2 lurching onto the shelves. I rather enjoyed the first issue, despite its excesses. The art was excellent and Johns can really shine as a writer when he wants to, even through some of the po-faced ultra-violence. Just a shame we never got any of those ginchy promo rings.
Meanwhile, over in Blackest Night Batman #1, it’s not what you probably think! Dick Grayson teams up with Deadman to take on the Black Lantern Flying Graysons. Recruited for their super-acrobatics, presumably. Anyway, it’s written by the underrated Peter Tomasi and drawn by apparently “hot new talent” Adrian Saef.
Oh, and if I could jump back to Geoff Johns for a moment, Adventure Comics makes its debut this week. Originally touted as the replacement Legion of Superheroes book, it was revealed in the wake of Legion of 3 Worlds #4 that it is in fact a showcase book for the returned Superboy. The Legion still feature, but more in the ongoing back-up features. Nice art by former Legion penciller Francis Manapul.
DC continues its mission to collect the entirety of Jack Kirby’s DC output with Sandman by Joe Simon & Jack Kirby HC. Simon & Kirby, the Lee & Kirby of their day, took the Sandman from his pulpy roots and made a true-blue superhero out of him, complete with youthful sidekick “Sandy the Golden Boy”. This volume collects their complete run, comprising of World's Finest Comics #6-7, Adventure Comics #72-97, #100-102 (1942-1946) and Sandman #1 (1974).
Dominic Fortune was always an odd fit for Marvel. A pulpy costumed adventurer created in the 70’s by Howard Chaykin, they never seemed to know quite what to do with him. The last we saw of him was a new version of the character, teaming up with Silver Sable in a Modesty Blaise-style spy thriller. Well, the original Depression-era character is back in brand new mini-series starting this week, with none other than Howard Chaykin back at the helm, handling writing and art chores. It’s a MAX affair, so not for the kiddies. Expect stockings, handguns and…smoking!
Okay, a quick roundup:
- Surprised I didn’t mention it sooner? So am I! Ultimate Comics Avengers #1 is out this week, with the triumphant return of Mark Millar to the characters that helped make his name. The art is by Carlos Pacheco, so it’ll certainly look good and Millar really did shine on the first two volumes of Ultimates. Well worth a look. Hey, it has be better than vol 3, right?
- Speaking of Ultimate relaunches, Ultimate Comics Spider-Man is also out this week, with writer Bendis still incumbent, but new artist David Lafuente bringing his distinctive (and very well suited) style to the mix.
- BPRD 1947 #2 and Hellboy The Wild Hunt #5 both grace us this week. Honestly, is there a comics universe that offers such reliable quality as this one? Mike Mignola has a great eye for talent and the work Joshua Dysart and the brothers Ba & Moon are doing on this BPRD mini is outstanding. As for Mignola & Fegredo, well, what would you expect?
- A reprint with some pedigree, Starstruck #1 begins a 13-part remastered representation of the classic Elaine Lee & Michael Kaluta space opera. Originally published variously by Heavy Metal, Epic Comics and Dark Horse, the series has been recoloured and also features Galactic Girl Guides backups by Lee, Kaluta & Charles Vess.
And that’s about it! Hopefully Hayley will be back on fine form next week, so until next time, au revoir!
Andrew.

The Gosh! Authority 05/08/09
Having just seen The Iron Giant for the very first time last week I’ve now got a thing for big robots. Gigantic ones. Like the one in Gosh! favourite Tom Gauld’s new book The Gigantic Robot. It’s a 32-page board book about the character he initially designed for the ZXZW festival poster in The Netherlands, a cross between something out of a computer game and a Hogarth engraving. Given Tom’s previous work it’s bound to be funny, sad and undoubtedly brilliant. You can see a couple of preview pages along with the original poster here, and if you’ve not been buying the Guardian every Saturday you can see some of his strips on his flickr page along with sketchbook stuff and other bits. I suspect we’ve sold out of Tom’s mini-comics at the moment but we’ve still got signed copies of Both, his collaboration with Simone Lia (Fluffy) if you fancy it.
Three volumes of Dave Stevens’ Selected Sketches & Studies are out this week. That’s volumes 2-4 if you’re counting (though we got shortchanged on Vol 2 so we won’t have any for the shelf. Give it another week or so and we’ll have some more). These volumes have been unavailable for some time so if you want sketches of Bettie Page, Vampirella and other lovely ladies done by a master pin-up artist you’d best get in before they disappear again. I’m not saying they will, but who knows what publishers are thinking.
Jerry Moriarty’s slice-of-life strip Jack Survives was central to Art Spiegelman’s 1980s RAW magazine, and Spiegelman still thinks so highly of him that he curated a Moriarty exhibition in New York back in 2004. This week his most famous strip is collected for the very first time in an oversized full-colour hardcover, including not just the comics but a selection of various Jack-themed Ed Hopper-y oil paintings too. Chris Ware even sings his praises in the introduction.
In The Saga of Solomon Kane Dark Horse collects all of Kane’s Savage Sword of Conan short stories from the 1970s in one handy trade. There’s loads of Robert E. Howard’s original stuff adapted into comics along with other stories by Roy Thomas (Conan the Barbarian) and Don Glut (Kull the Destroyer). I thought I’d announce its arrival because everyone has been asking for it. If you’ve been collecting the Savage Sword of Conan omnibus series (another Gosh! Favourite we highly recommend) consider this a companion of sorts.
Duncan Rouleau’s (Ben 10) 8-issue hit mini-series Metal Men is out in trade paperback this week. Nat liked it so much he almost bought it in hardcover (fact). While it’s not set in the 60s like the original Robert Kanigher Showcase stuff Rouleau says it’s very Atomic Age-y – a goofy, light-hearted, scientific-romp. He talks at length about with with CbR here, just before the series started.
In new comics this week we’ve got Dark Reign Zodiac #2 (of 3) which you should have a look at because Nathan Fox’s artwork is great. Here’s a review of the first issue which you can still find on our new release shelf. We’ll also have Glen Brunswick and Dan McDaid’s Jersey Gods #6 sitting right next to the first Jersey Gods trade of last week, which conveniently collects everything up to and including #5.
In issue #1s we’ve got Jason Aaron’s (Scalped, Wolverine) new six-part mini-series Ghost Riders: Heaven’s on Fire illustrated by Roland Boschi. It’s the climax to the story he’s been building for a whole year of issues – the battle at the gates of Heaven. It’s also a good jumping-on point if you haven’t been reading it previously thanks to the ‘Previously, on Ghost Rider…’ recap on page one. Aaron tells you all about it here. And, of course, a preview.
Another biggie is the beginning of Ed Brubaker’s eight-part Marvels Project on which he reunites with his Captain America collaborator, Steve Epting. Brubaker describes is as “a giant espionage story that really tells the story of the origin of Marvel. It's a story that has been touched upon here and there, especially in the first issue of Marvels, which showed things from an outsider's perspective. But this is an insider's point of view of how superheroes began in the Marvel world. I hesitate to use the term "universe" too much because, as yet, there hasn't been anything extra-terrestrial involved in it, but who's to say?” More of that here, plus a preview.
J. Michael Straczynski’s latest is Red Circle The Hangman, a one-shot illustrated by Tom Derenick and Bill Sienkiewicz (Reign in Hell). There’s a preview over at DC’s blog and over at CbR they explain who, what, why and talk to JMS himself.
Last week a couple of things came in that I failed to mention. Tozo the Public Servant arrived an hour too late to go on the weekly mail-out but we won’t think anything less of him for his tardiness. If you’re a fan of very nice Herge-looking comics about intrigue and conspiracy, this is the very fellow for you. Head on over to the website if you don’t believe me.
Also a feature in last week’s swag is Batman: The Brave and the Bold #7 illustrated by Darwyn Cooke’s pal J. Bone, pages of which can be seen on writer J. Torres’ blog. Also, Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam #6 sports a J. Bone cover and the innards are by Stephen DeStefano who is rather good too.
According to J. Bone’s blog there’s a Draw Parker competition going on in honour of the release of Cooke’s new book. If it’s not clear who the pictures are by I’d go have a look through the Almost Darwyn Cooke Blog (But Not Quite) because they’re talked about as they arrive.
On the subject of Cooke, there’s still no sign of the bookplates but I’m sure we’ll have them very soon. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow…
