The Gosh! Authority 24/06/09

I have returned. Fun Fact! There are no comic shops in the wilderness but there are lots of sheep.

Queer Visitors from the Marvelous Land of Oz gets top spot this week because it’s enormous. Just like previous Sunday Press collections (Walt & Skeezix, Little Nemo – all in the shop at the mo) you could set sail on its hardcover table-sized newspaper format. The strip (illustrated by Walt McDougall) began in newspapers over a hundred years ago as L. Frank Baum’s way of promoting his second (Wizard of) Oz book. All of the Queer Visitors – Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, the Woggle-Bug, Jack Pumpkinhead and the Sawhorse - are here, plus Oz-illustrator W.W. Denslow’s Scarecrow and Tin-Man strip which ran simultaneously to the aforementioned after he and Baum had a falling out (cartoonists!). Sunday Press have written reams on it and have even posted a few preview pages on their site.

The Actress and the Bishop #1 reprints more classic (though considerably more recent) stuff by Brian Bolland. All of the previous appearances of the unlikely two are here waiting to offend and amuse so you’d best get amongst it. Said the actress.

The Ancient Book of Sex & Science is the second instalment of low-brow art after The Ancient Book of Myth & War of two years(ish) ago. All the illustrators are top-notch animators from Pixar - Lou Romano, Don Shank, Nate Wragg – and it looks like it’ll be quite a treat. Have a PDF preview, why don’t you!

On the subject of art and boobs you’ll find more of the same in our latest shipment of Dean Yeagle books which includes a couple of volumes of Scribblings, Mandy’s Shorts, and One Mandy Morning. Peruse his site but beware of naked ladies if you’re at work.

Harvey Kurtzman needs no introduction, but this is a bit of what Last Gasp have at the beginning of theirs:
Harvey Kurtzman discovered Robert Crumb…. Terry Gilliam also started at his side, met an unknown John Cleese in the process, and the genesis of Monty Python was formed. Art Spiegelman has stated on record that he owes his career to him…(and more)
…Which makes it a bit odd that The Art of Harvey Kurtzman: The Mad Genius of Comics HC is the first and only (authorised) celebration of the guy’s art. It’s full of stuff you won’t have seen before and all mostly in colour to boot – illustrations, paintings, pencil sketches, EC Comics layouts etc plus a bunch of photos dragged howling from the vaults. All this topped off with an introduction by Harry “Derek Smalls” Shearer.

There’s a couple of anthologies hitting the shelves that you should have a look at. If you like stuff like Deadwood and No Country For Old Men pick up Outlaw Territory Volume 1 for 240 pages of gritty old west America from the likes of Joe Kelly, Dean Motter, Greg Pak, Max Fiumara et al. Ol’ reliable CBR have a preview for you.

Then Top Shelf give you another dose of indie greatness with Awesome 2: Awesomer which features stuff from Chris Duffy, Sarah Glidden, Fred Van Lente, Ryan Dunlavey, Jeff Lemire, Alex Robinson, and more – plus a cover by Bone/Rasl’s Jeff Smith! If you buy it you can wear the smug smile of a London cyclist because you’re doing a vaguely good deed by partly funding a student scholarship to the Center for Cartoon Studies in Vermont.

The fifth volume of the incredibly popular Tezuka’s Black Jack is out this week in paperback. For some reason the lovely PX hardcover editions of the series only went up to Volume 3 and there are no plans to resume them so I’d grab this now instead of holding out. And if you look here you’ll see that someone’s put up an early review of this instalment of medical manga.

Also in trade-paperback is Kathryn/Stuart Immonen and David Lafuente’s Patsy Walker: Hellcat. Lafuente’s a very talented up-and-comer who’s about to be given his big break taking over from Immonen on Ultimate Spider-Man - get in on the ground floor here! This Patsy Walker has as much in common with Tank Girl as it does any previous incarnations of the character and is sure to appeal to Marvel fans who enjoyed stuff like Nextwave or X-Statix. This collection also features the Patsy Walker strips from Marvel Comics Presents, written by Kathryn Immonen and drawn by her extra talented husband Stuart.

In comics we’ve got Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-Men: Utopia one-shot which is the beginning of a 6-part crossover event (the first Avengers/X-Men in fifteen years!) bookended by a couple of specials (checklist here). Given how much Andrew liked Matt Fraction’s work on Uncanny X-Men he’ll probably be recommending this one come Thursday so I thought I’d get in first and save him the trouble. It’s illustrated by Marc Silvestri (X-Men: Messiah Complex, Civil War: The Initiative) which you can see here in a preview, and also a review.

If you’ve been following Dark Reign it’s going to be a big week for you with no less than five issues plus a trade-paperback to haul home! Nat’s pick of the bunch is Dark Reign: Zodiac #1 (of 3) by Joe Casey (Uncanny X-Men) and Nathan Fox. Fox’s illustrations in Pigeons From Hell and DMZ have been lauded by reviewers all over the place, and Timothy Callahan over at CbR couldn’t believe Marvel actually got him to do a superhero comic. Check out this preview if you don’t believe ‘em.

Now for the And Finally part of the news where we put death and war aside and talk about rescuing ducks from ledges and such. Over at Panel Borders Alex Fitch talks to Gosh-favourite Shaun Tan about his books The Arrival, Tales From Outer Suburbia, his life, the universe and everything. If you haven’t yet picked up one of our signed Shaun Tan books we’ve still got a few left. And while we’re boasting about signed books, have you heard about Darwyn Cooke’s The Hunter Gosh! Bookplate Edition? Well now you have.

And that’s it from me. I’ll be here as usual next week unless I’m beamed up or something.
-- Hayley

The Gosh! Authority 18/06/09

It’s a Hayley Holiday Week folks, so you’ve got me again for a quick whip through the week’s releases. Not exactly bursting at the seams this week, but there are a few notable bits and pieces so let’s get started!

Pick of the week for me? Well, I’m going to have to run with an oldie and go for the Sleeper Season One TP, by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. If you’ve never read this spiritual precursor to their excellent Criminal series then you really should make sure this is on your shopping list for the week. Wildstorm superheroes meet crime noir, as former black ops operative Holden Carver is stranded under deep cover within the criminal organisation of the enigmatic super-genius known as Tao. A decidedly adult tale of deception, betrayal and a guy who absorbs and redirects pain (and the immorality-powered woman who loves (and hates) him). I can’t recommend this enough.

Speaking of golden oldies, remember Hitman? Well at long last DC do and this week we see the first reissued volume of Garth Ennis and John McCrea’s much-missed series about metahuman assassin Tommy Monaghan. Like all good Ennis books, there’s plenty of time spent in the pub with an increasingly bizarre cast (Dog-Welder, anyone?) who never lose their humanity despite the escalating weirdness around them. An irreverent, action-packed classic.

One more for the reprint files is Robert Kirkman and Phil Hester’s Irredeemable Ant-Man, now collected into one handy proper-sized volume. Currently a member of the Thunderbolts, former low-level SHIELD operative and full-time heel Eric O’Grady started his super-sorta-hero life in these 12 issues, on the run from his employers in a stolen suit of Hank Pym’s armour. It’s a lot of fun as O’Grady uses his newly-acquired powers for less-than heroic purposes while occasionally saving folks. Something of an overlooked gem, also featuring art from Kirkman’s Invincible co-creator Corey Walker.

Okay, time for something new. Jamie Smart, clever-Brit creator of Bear, has the second volume of his Slave Labor anthology Fat Chunk out this week. He’s got a great line-up of creators, including Lew Stringer, Scott Wegener, Sonny Lieu and many more, including someone named Chunkysmurf, who surely must be the greatest artist of all time.

Fans of the Paul Dini / Dustin Nguyen Detective Comics run from the pre-RIP days will be happy to see the pair re-team for Batman Streets of Gotham #1. The new series promises a more street-level view of the new Batman, and the impact his presence has on the citizens of Gotham City. Oh, okay, here’s a preview.

Enough of that new stuff, you cry, give us more reprints of classic material! Well, the third Starman Omnibus hits the shelves this week, a darn sight more prompt than the second. This volume of (fun fact) former Gosh! employee James Robinson's excellent series features a team-up with Batman to fight against the always entertaining Solomon Grundy (married on a grey and grisly Wednesday), as well as the origins of the Shade, as related in the Shade mini-series illustrated by JH Williams III.

The first issue of Final Crisis Aftermath Dance was a pleasant surprise. Morrison’s Super Young Team are a perfect fit for the underrated Joe Casey, whose Intimates explored a similar theme of media-exploited teen heroes. ChrisCross does a great job on the art, creating a fast-paced, energetic feel that sits very well with the characters. Issue #2 is out this week, and I would be remiss not to recommend it, especially since we do still have some copies of #1 in stock so it’s not too late to catch up.

Argh! Running out of time! Here’s the round-up ticker:
- Penultimate issue of Captain Britain & MI 13 ships with absolutely beautiful cover. Really, check it out.
- Artist Christian Ward breathes sigh of relief to see Olympus #2 come out, complete with Frank Quitely variant cover. Still some sketched first issues in store!
- Goon Volume 7 collects best story arc from best series you’re probably not reading.
- Fourth volume of Wasteland released to cheers of post-apocalyptic junkies everywhere.
- Phonogram Vol 2 #3 released to cheers and frenzied creation of playlists.
- Seth’s George Sprott is a genius piece of comics and you really should read it.

So, Captain America #600 is out this week to much speculation and brouhaha, with an early release in the US helping to fill the internet with spoilers. If by some miracle you’ve managed to remain unsullied by the web I won’t ruin it for you here. Suffice it to say that Marvel have promised a BIG EVENT, so top secret that stores had to order it completely blind. Cheers for that, Big M. Anyway, all the hype aside, Brubaker has been writing a terrific arc on Captain America and so I’m fairly confident this won’t disappoint. One thing I will guarantee is that this issue won’t last long, so get in early! This cover is actually from Reborn #1, but I couldn't resist sharing my favourite quote regarding the issue, from Tom Spurgeon over in the comments on The Beat’s coverage:

Is the tiny, glowing, screaming skeleton going to be permanently embedded into the new Captain America’s abdomen and crotch? Because if so, I have a new favorite comic.

And that’s about that. Campbell is back next week, so expect normal service to resume then. Otherwise, have a good one!

Oh wait. Did someone say Darwyn Cooke Bookplate?

Hmm, guess I’d better look into that…

Andrew.

The Gosh! Authority 10/06/09

It’s not a huge one this week but I’m sure there’ll be something here to tickle your fancy. Perhaps it will even calm your screaming rage at the London Underground if you happen to make it in this Thursday.

With Leah Moore and John Reppion’s Sherlock Holmes #2, Sherlock Holmes & Kolchak #2 and the Ians Edginton & Culbard Hound of the Baskervilles out this week we should up and move to Baker Street for the day. You won’t be able to walk past the latter without having a peek at our exclusive Gosh! bookplate, the very first of the lot to be Victorian Gosh-themed. We blogged about this a month ago so go have a read if you haven’t already.

Another cracking creative duo unites for Will Eisner’s The Spirit #29Dean Motter and Paul Rivoche of Mister X fame! Newsarama have a preview of the story which somehow sees The Spirit wind up in the middle of a feud between an old tattooist and his hipster rival all because Ellen Dolan wants to get inked.

Then it’s a veritable trevor trove of creators in the Uncanny X-Men First Class Giant-Size Special #1 – a who’s who of comics, if you will. We’ve got Jeff Parker, Scott Gray (Fin Fang Four), and Roger Langridge (Fred the Clown) writing, with Dennis Calero (X-Men Noir), Sean “Cheeks” Galloway, Craig Rousseau (The Perhapanauts), Cameron Stewart (Seaguy, Transmetropolitan), David Williams, and Kevin Nowlan illustrating so it should be as giant as the name suggests. Speaking of Langridge, about a fortnight ago we got a pile of his mini-comic The Show Must Go On Chapter 1: Mackerel and then I promptly forgot to say something in the weekly mail-out because I’m rubbish. It’s the first collection of his webcomic which can be seen every Tuesday here, or at least that’s the way it used to be until he had to do stuff like Uncanny X-Men First Class Giant-Size Special #1 to ward off starvation and ruin and whatnot.

Jordan Crane is someone who should be far more famous than he is. I liked The Last Lonely Saturday and his new stuff in Uptight is great too – even Boing Boing thinks so! The long-awaited third issue is out this week (the last was seen mid-2007) and that BB post even has a couple of preview pages for your perusal. In a side note, while poking about I also noticed they’ve linked to the New Yorker preview of Robert Crumb’s Genesis. (It’s not out yet. I’m only showing you.)

If you haven’t had enough of Grant Morrison after last week’s Batman & Robin/Seaguy double-bill keep an eye out for the Final Crisis hardcover featuring the art of J.G. Jones (52 Covers, plus a brand new cover for this collection), Carlos Pacheco (Superman) and Doug Mahnke (Black Adam). At a whopping 352 pages, it collects not only the core series but also the Final Crisis: Submit one-shot and Superman Beyond #1 and #2.

Beta Ray Bill: Godhunter #1 (of 3) is the beginning of a new mini-series by Phonogram’s Kieron Gillen and sees Bill embark on an insane mission to hunt down and kill Galactus for scoffing the wrong planet. Gillen’s very excited about it as you can see on his blog. As well as the new material this issue also reprints Bill’s very first appearance from the pages of Thor #337 by Walter Simonson.

American McGee’s Grimm #2 looks to be another instalment of delightfully nuttiness. We’ve still got a few copies of #1 kicking about so you can pick ‘em both up at the same time and pretend you got there at the very beginning. The interior art’s rather wonderful and probably of interest to fans of Ben Templesmith (who did the cover for this one that Grant Bond didn’t do), and Eric Powell. Dwight L. MacPherson has some preview pages from the first issue up on his blog.

You’ll find more sinister doings in The Strange Adventures of HP Lovecraft #2 illustrated by the brilliant Tony Salmond who doesn’t really do comics anymore so it’s a rare treat.

This series is a bit like Lovecraft’s own short story Pickman’s Model in the sense that the monsters are real (and if you’ve not read that story I’ve ruined it for you now) but instead of just standing around posing they’re out killing innocent people and leading the trail right back to Lovecraft’s doorstep…

Apparently Ron Howard has signed on to do the movie already. It’s news to me. Check that link for preview pages from the first issue (which we’ve still got if you missed it).

In small press this week we’ve got a new one from Marc Ellerby, previously mentioned on this blog when This is a Souvenir: The Songs of Spearmint & Shirley came out. When he’s not drawing pictures of himself in the Kochalka-y, Scott Pilgrimy autobiographical Ellerbisms he’s working on Chloe Noonan: Monster Hunter which he plans to turn into a series. He says...

Chloe Noonan is a monster hunter (duh) but it's tough being one when you don't have any powers and you have to bring your friend along with you. She's not even that bothered about saving the world really, as running around gives her a stitch. It's a tongue in cheek look at fantasy and puts the b-list character in the foreground. It's less about hunting monsters and more about getting the bus.

Previews on his website.

And finally, Joel Meadows went along to the Alan Moore & Kevin O’Neill (them again) with Christopher Frayling talk at the ICA and writes about it here. By now he’s probably got more photos of Alan Moore than Alan Moore himself, but from all the ones I’ve seen I think I like this best:

And that’s that. I won’t be here next week as I’m going on holiday by mistake.

The Gosh! Authority 03/06/09

Like Cillit Bang I’ll cut through grease and get straight to the point: All-Star Superman team and Gosh! favourites Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s Batman & Robin is in this week! It’s big news. According to Morrison, this new series sees a shift in the duo’s dynamic – and with a ‘more light-hearted and spontaneous Batman and a scowling, badass Robin’ they might have to switch sides of the ampersand. This is the first issue of a 3-part arc (the first of 12 issues in total). Morrison describes it as poppy and colourful but creepier, like David Lynch doing the Batman TV show. If this page takes your fancy make sure it’s in your stack of stuff on Thursday.

Punisher MAX: Naked Kill is a one-shot written by Jonathan Mayberry (writer of the novel Patient Zero, a short story in Wolverine: The Anniversary, and ex-bodyguard) with art by yet another Gosh! favourite, Laurence Campbell. It sees Frank Castle infiltrate a building to stop the making of a snuff film with nothing but his wits, some pencils and a feather duster – sort of like MacGyver gone bad. This one’s worth picking up for the art alone. Point your mince pies at these!

You’ll find more lashings of ultraviolence in Wolverine: Revolver by Victor Gischler and Das Pastoras a.k.a. Julio Perez (Wolverine: Switchback). In Las Vegas Logan finds himself in a game of Russian Roulette with a bunch of mobsters. Gischler loves writing Wolverine and it’s not just because he likes to see a fellow shortie kicking arse:
“Wolverine has an animal cunning and temper that provides great material for a writer. I also love writing dialogue and narration in Logan's voice. I think if Philip Marlow were a bit more ill-tempered and had adamantium claws, he'd be Wolverine.” A Wolverine comic with Chandlerisms, maybe? We’ll see.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Tales of the Vampires is another one-shot out this week and sees indy artist Becky Cloonan (DEMO, Pixu) make her feature-length debut as a writer. Vasilis Lolos (also Pixu) illustrates the 40-page tale, while Gabriel Ba (Umbrella Academy) and Fabio Moon provide an alternative to the Jo Chen cover. Cloonan tells you all about it over at Newsarama.

There’s a pile of books worth a mention this week, and because I think Seth is brilliant I’ll blather about him first. Much like his Wimbledon Green, or for that matter It’s a Good Life If You Don’t Weaken, his latest offering is an account of the fictional life of George Sprott. It originally ran as one-pagers in the New York Times Magazine Funny Pages (previously occupied by the likes of Chris Ware’s Building Stories and Mister Wonderful) though Fantagraphics promises this to be a greatly expanded and re-mastered version of the thing. PDFs of the original pages still exist on the internet. This chap even reviews the book.

If you liked Bill Presing’s Bookplate Betties or Justin Coffee’s Cream & Sugar here’s another two for the shelf. Shane Glines is an animation character designer who has previously worked for Spümcø (of Ren & Stimpy fame), Batman: The Animated Series, Samurai Jack, and is also the founder of Cartoon Retro – the world’s largest online archive of vintage illustration, animation, comics and cartoons. Will Kane got in a bunch of Cartoon Retro: The Art of Shane Glines Volumes 1 and 2 which are full of amazing cartoon ladies. There are photos of the books on the publisher’s website. I wholeheartedly recommend you have a peek.

Speaking of animation, My Name is Dug is a hardcover kids books based on Pixar’s Up. Definitely one to grab if you like the look of the film – it’s written and illustrated by Ronnie Del Carmen who’s currently a story supervisor at Pixar and has also worked on various Batman things with Bruce Timm just like Shane Glines up there.

Let’s Do Nothing is a book by another Pixar/Disney animator, Tony Fucile. You’ll have seen his Jack-Jack Attack Little Golden Book on the counter here at Gosh! no doubt. This is another lovely looking kids book with huge illustrations of two hyperactive kids attempting to do absolutely nothing.

Fans of stuff like Tintin and Blake & Mortimer should keep an eye out for this one in August – The Rainbow Orchid by Garen Ewing. It’s the first of three volumes about the adventures of Julius Chancer and from the previews it looks amazing. He’s currently running a competition to win a cover proof he’s signed and sketched on. Head over to his website and log in to the members’ area where you’ll find the link to the competition.

And now for the ‘And finally’ bit of news: Shaun Tan is an amazing artist who has not only produced some of the most beautiful books in recent memory but has also worked as a concept artist for Horton Hears a Who and Pixar’s (them again) WALL-E. He’s over from Australia at the moment for the Hay Festival and popped into Gosh! last week to sign a bunch of books for us. But he didn’t just scribble on them with a black marker – he drew in them, stamped them, even drew designs over red inky thumbprints. And look – he drew us a picture!

If you haven’t yet nabbed a copy of The Arrival or Tales From Outer Suburbia come get a signed one before they’re all gone.
