As you all know, Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill’s new League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Century 1910 is out in the very near but somewhat vague future. We’ll be having a signing with both of them in late April/early May but the timing all depends on what day the books arrive. Don’t fret, you’ll get all the proper details as soon as we do. In the meantime, you'd best get down to the shop quick smart: we’ve got fifteen pages of original artwork from the book that we’ll display from this weekend! Come and have a look.
The third volume in the Ted McKeever Library is out, Metropol, which you can see a preview of here. You’ll recognise characters from the previous two books in this story about a devastated city and a killer plague causing sufferers to rise from the dead as an angels or demons. “The problem is, there are only a handful of angels, and thousands of demons,” says McKeever. “What sets it (somewhat) balanced, is the angels have skin of metal, and are heavily armed with assault weapons.”
I thought I’d write something about Maurice Vellekoop’s Pin-Ups and then I thought I might even stick up some pictures but as it turns out they’re far too rude and Nat would only tell me off because this book contains willies. His fashion illustrations have appeared in Time, Cosmopolitan, GQ, Vanity Fair and Vogue, and they didn’t have willies in them, but this book does.
Much like his infamous collection ABC: A Homoerotic Primer, this is a collection of pictures of young men along the same sort of lines of George Quaintance, Harry Bush, and the unforgettable Tom of Finland. Iconic artworks like Michelangelo’s David get an obscene makeover, as does Leonardo Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man which I think is rather timely given the current internet discussions about Dr Manhattan.
Showcase Presents Ambush Bug TP Volume 1 is a monumental 500 pages of hilarious insanity. Claiming to have gained his superpowers from a costume sent to Earth from a distant planet, Irwin Schwab proceeded to wind up every other proper hero he encountered during his own super-heroic career. There’s loads of stuff in this collection including Ambush Bug’s brilliantly named secret origin story, We Thought Him Up.
Also out this week is Cla$$war Series 1 in a collected hardcover. A political thriller with superheroes (as writer Rob Williams described it), this critically-acclaimed miniseries was voted Wizard’s Indie Superhero Comic of the Year 2002 so it’s probably worth a look if you missed it back then. If you did catch it and liked it, you’ll be wanting the exclusive new story by Williams with art by Trevor Hairsine they’ve added to the collection plus the usual bevy of big hardcover extras.
Mark Millar and Peter Gross’ 2004 3-issue miniseries Chosen has been renamed and repackaged like a Marathon bar and is now called American Jesus Volume 1: Chosen. Millar explains why in some bits of an interview I’ve once again purloined from Comic Book Resources, as is my wont:
"The whole thing was always planned as a nine-issue series, and it was going to be made up of three trilogies so I could get three #1s out of it. I've always got an eye on sales, so I wanted to get three #1s. Plus, with it being a biblical thing, a trilogy seemed to make sense. We even ended the first one on a cliffhanger."
We’ll be getting the follow-up miniseries The Second Coming at some point in the future. Also in the post is the final issue of Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso’s 100 Bullets! No, it’s not out this week, but I have word from DC that it has been expanded to a special 48-page issue hitting the shelves on April 16.
The Royal Academy currently has their own exhibition on and I’m willing you bet you a packet of crisps it’ll be bigger than our LoEG one. They’re showcasing the work of 19th century Japanese printmaker Utagawa Kuniyoshi until early June. Here’s what they’ve got to say about it:
Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797–1861) is considered one of the greatest Japanese print artists. Prolific and multi-talented, Kuniyoshi portrayed the historic heroes of Japan’s warrior past and through masterful storytelling kept alive the great myths and legends. His depictions of fashionable beauties and actors reveals another strand in his work, as do his prints of comical or satirical subjects, vivid reflections of his lively sense of humour. The exhibition will display Kuniyoshi’s most staggering imagery, from his innovative representations of tattooed Chinese heroes of the Suikoden, to his most successful applications of Western perspective, as well as good examples of his humorous designs. More here.
We’ve got a pair of tickets to give away so first person to claim ‘em in the comments or an email to the shop gets ‘em! You don’t even have to write a rubbish haiku or anything, promise.

The Gosh! Authority 18/03/09
This week there’s a couple of big art books worth a mention, the first of which is the second volume of Tara McPherson’s stuff, Lost Constellations. You probably saw her previous book Lonely Heart in the shop (so popular it’s already in its third printing), but if not you’ve undoubtedly seen her work somewhere even if it was just on someone’s arm. This volume’s a 112-page hardcover collection of her most recent work which you can see (some of) on the website for the Jonathan LeVine Gallery where she exhibited last year in her very first solo show.
The other one I was going to point at is the Reynold Brown: Life in Pictures hardcover which is a bit like the Norman Saunders book from a couple of weeks ago. Brown was an incredibly prolific American artist who painted everything from planes for North American Aviation to charming ladies such as this one. He did well over 300 movie posters in his lifetime which you will undoubtedly have seen: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Spartacus, and I was a Teenage Werewolf. This book covers his entire career (not just posters, though they’re in there too) and reproduces hundreds of illustrations in full colour as you can see here, sort of. There seems to be an abundance of tiny previews around today.
The long awaited and long delayed Trigan Empire Collection volumes 1 and 12 have arrived! The 12th volume collects five stories by Don Lawrence and Mike Butterworth previously published in Look and Learn in the ‘70s, which brings me conveniently to yet another huge new hardcover: The Bumper Book of Look and Learn. Lavishly illustrated, as you would expect, with loads of new material on top of the already staggering 1, 152 pages spanning the entire 48 issues run.
On the subject of classics, Joe Kubert revisits an iconic character in Tor: A Prehistoric Odyssey HC which collects the six-issue miniseries from last year. Also worth a look.
Garth Ennis’ Just a Pilgrim has long been out of print but this week it’s dragged out of comicbook limbo. Collected in hardcover are the original five issues along with the 2002 follow-up series, Just a Pilgrim: Garden of Eden, plus a cover gallery by Tim Bradstreet, JG Jones, Glenn Fabry and others. Illustrated by Judge Dredd artist Carlos Ezquerra, it’s a series set in a post-apocalyptic world where people eat each other instead of their greens.
"I wanted to push the idea of the classic Western or action anti-hero a little bit more than I normally would, and that is where the religious fanaticism came from and also where the cannibalism came from."
Says Ennis.
There are a couple of reviews which both seem to agree that despite being flawed and largely illogical it’s a lot of fun and madness.
One more book and then I’ll point at some comics:
When Tori Amos was pregnant she asked Neil Gaiman to write a poem for her unborn baby. They were calling her the Blueberry until they figured out who she actually was, so he wrote Blueberry Girl and years later Charles Vess (Stardust) somehow turned it into a picture book. Gaiman explains what it is here and there’s even a wee preview video with a reading too.
New comics this week include the sweary Bad Dog #2 written by Joe Kelly and illustrated by Diego Greco. There’s a preview of the next issue here, and several reviews of the last issue that agree it’s a howlin’ riot. We’ve still got a few of those if you missed it.
Groom Lake #1 is the beginning of a new four-part series written by Chris Ryall with art by Ben Templesmith who describes it as “a humour/quirky horror type sci-fi book about probings and crotch powah.” Newsarama interviewed the boys back in January where they talked about Close Encounters, Gold Key UFO comic reprints, and exploding crotches (again!). A couple of reviews are in already, and there’s another tiny pointless preview on Ryall’s blog (probably best to have a look in the shop).
Jamie Delano also starts a four-parter this week with Rawbone #1, a dark story of misery full of vicious roughneck pirates illustrated by Max Fiurama (Warren Ellis’ BlackGas).
None of your girlish Johnny Depp variety to be found here, I’d wager.
If you’ve ever wanted to own a copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962) – the very first appearance of Spider-Man – now’s yer chance! Jonathan Ross donated the comic to Comic Relief and you’ve got until the 28th to win it. Last I checked it was going for just over £3000. (Or if that fails horribly go here then click on the auctions bit.)
And finally, here’s something exciting for Goon fans – exclusive pictures from the upcoming animated movie produced by David Fincher.

The Gosh! Authority 11/03/09
When Jack “King” Kirby was done with his Fourth World stuff he did a number of strange projects for DC including the reinvention of the classic war series Our Fighting Forces in 1974. Created by Robert Kanigher and Russ Heath in 1969, it featured WWII heroes The Losers, a group made up of some of DC’s secondary characters - Johnny Cloud, Captain Storm, Gunner and Sarge – most of whom had their own series at some point. Kirby’s twelve issue run was so different from what had come before it that many fans of the series were none too pleased. Kirby fans, however, will love it. This hardcover’s in the same format as the other ones we’ve got (the Fourth World books and Demon Omnibus), and features an introduction by that other guy who’s sometimes brought in to reinvent stuff, Neil Gaiman.
“It seems to me that the Losers is a ‘people’ thing. A small squad of ‘everymen’ caught up in the crushing tide of events, pushing their ‘know-how’ to the limit in a wild effort to survive.”
Jack Kirby (1975)
Evil Nazis, eye-patches, and an attack on the Germans based on a strategy they found in a comicbook. That pretty much ticks every box, I think.
Also out this week is the Humbug hardcover. What’s that then? In biographies of Harvey Kurtzman the bit between leaving MAD and starting Playboy’s Little Annie Fanny is generally mumbled over – he created and edited three magazines, Trump, Humbug, and Help! which unlike MAD and Annie Fanny are not readily available these days or, for that matter, back then. It might have something to do with this:
"We won't write for morons. We won't do anything just to get laughs. We won't be dirty. We won't be grotesque. We won't be in bad taste. We won't sell magazines."
Without a publisher to reign them in, the artists (Will Elder, Jack Davis, Al Jaffee and Arnold Roth) could pretty much print whatever they pleased. So as you can probably imagine, it’s a far more cutting kind of satire than the stuff in MAD. Fantagraphics have restored the entire 11-issue run and talk about the process on their blog.
Here’s a magazine people do want to buy and not just in a retrospective way: Mustard #4! It’s got a huge interview with Big Hairy Alan Moore accompanied by a picture of him standing beside a plate of assorted biscuits and a cup of tea in the Gosh! basement. Half of the interview is stuff from 2005, but there’s a lot of new stuff too which makes it worth getting even if you got the previous Moore issue. There are preview pages here but they’re not big enough to actually read so you’ll just have to fork out the £2 for a copy.
If you picked up McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern #27 a while back you would have seen some of Art Spiegelman’s private sketchbooks. Or you can just click here and pretend you saw them ages ago. Now they’ve reproduced three more of them (1979, 1983 and 2007), ink spots, tea stains and all, for the first time ever in Be a Nose! They even made an animated book trailer that’s actually quite fun, unlike almost every book trailer I’ve ever seen. Spiegelman says...
“Since cartoonists are supposed to work for publication, I figured I would complete my private gesture by shaming myself in public.”
Another one you should see is the next instalment of Peanuts Volume 11 1971-1972 which sees Sally Brown make cover girl and Schulz makes gags about Bob Dylan and Women’s Lib. Telling you why you should read Peanuts seems like a pointless exercise, so I won’t. Instead I’ll point you to this.
The Perry Bible Almanack hardcover collects comics, lost comics, sketches and general misc in what is the second (and probably the final) book in the series. I say the second, but it actually spans the entire printrun of the strip rendering the previous collection somewhat obsolete. Nicolas Gurewitch counts Jim Woodring (Frank), Scott McCloud (Understanding Comics) and Tony Millionaire (Maakies) as fans and here’s an example of why:
You should also have a look at Tarzan: The Jesse Marsh Years Volume 1 hardcover., collecting the first four issues of the first post-Disney work by artist Marsh. It was the start of a long-lasting collaboration with another brilliant name in comics, Gaylord DuBois, and a highly influential series. Dark Horse plan to collect nineteen years worth of stuff so you’ll get Volume 2 at some point in June.
If you didn’t get enough Madman Atomic Comics last week you’ll be glad to know there’s trade-paperback in the post. There’s a big bonus section full of rare art and whatnot, plus an introduction by Eric Powell (The Goon). Preview!
And in new comics this week, the second issue of the relaunched Astonishing Tales hits the shelves (preview) complete with a Ted McKeever story, as well as the second issue of Soul Kiss by Steven T. Seagle (American Virgin) and Marco Cinello (Spongebob Squarepants Movie, Curious George)! If you look for ‘soul kiss’ previews on the internet you might accidentally watch an Olivia Newton-John video or something, so I’ve gone and done it for you. We’ve still got a few copies of the first issue kicking about so don’t worry if you missed it.
Amazon #1 is the first of a three-issue series of early work by Steven T. Seagle (that man again) and artist Tim Sale published again twenty years after its initial release. It’s completely remastered and recoloured, scanned from Sale’s original artwork, and even sports a brand new cover by Sale and Dave Stewart. Have a look at it here.
And finally, some Batman stuff. In June we’ll see Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely (the All-Star Superman team) do a new series, Batman & Robin! Calm down, it’s a while off yet. This week, Batman: Battle for the Cowl sees a bunch of characters do just that. If you haven’t been paying attention there’s a reader guide to fill you in. The Geeks of Doom present possible candidates, and Newsarama speak to writer/artist Tony Daniel. He says...
“Batman was much more than just a costume, you know; putting it on doesn’t make you Batman.”
Go and tell that to your wee brother and see what he says.

The Gosh! Authority 04/03/09
You might have noticed Watchmen is out this week. As far as we know, this is probably exactly what Big Hairy Alan ‘I’ll never watch this f***ing thing’ Moore is up to right this minute. But if you’re looking forward to it and fancy winning an Owl Ship watch or summat head over to Geek Syndicate and enter their competition.
Lots of Darwyn Cooke stuff this week, which is nice. He collaborates with writer J. Bone (Mutant Texas, Super Friends, go look at his blog) in Madman Atomic Comics #14 for an all-new story in which some Hollywood suits want to base a film on Frank Einstein’s life. Loosely, of course. Here’s what Allred says:
"Darwyn and I are like twins separated at birth. We dig all the same things and get ridiculously excited about whatever we're working on. We also throw fits whenever we're told 'no' by 'the Man', and, sometimes to our detriment, have a 'burned earth policy' when it comes to doing a project the way we want. Fortunately, we usually get the support needed to build our visions, and Madman Atomic Comics is a prime example of that. Image Comics could not be more supportive in their backing me up with all my crazed paper dreams in Madman Atomic Comics. They're just as jazzed as I am to invite Darwyn and mutual pal, and cool genius, J.Bone, on Madman Atomic Comics #14!"
The other Darwyn Cooke news is that he’s done the cover for the next issue of Jersey Gods, out this week! You may remember Allred did the last one (we’ve still got the first printing of issue one kicking about somewhere if you missed it). Glen Brunswick and Dan McDaid’s second issue sees things go horribly wrong when the Gods choose the Cherry Hill Mall as their battleground. There’s lots of lovely preview art from the incredibly talented McDaid which is well worth a look.
The second trade paperback of Gosh favourite Atomic Robo is new this week, and if you like the art in it you should pick up a copy of Killer of Demons #1 because it’s by the same bloke, Scott Wegener. Hell has invaded Earth and only Dave Sloan, junior account executive, and his collection of annoying co-workers can save the day. There’s an interview with writer Chris Yost and Wegener over at Comicbook Resources, plus lots of art here.
The Art of Pixar Short Films hardcover is in this week, which is a big coffee table thing directly tied into the Pixar Short Films Collection DVD – an in-depth history of the studio’s early shorts and whatnot. Here’s what the writer Amid Amidi’s got to say...
“Today we look at Pixar as the untouchable 800-pound gorilla of computer animation so it’s easy to forget that not so long ago, they were a struggling hardware company and their animation division was comprised of just a handful of folks working in a company of over one hundred people.” More here.
Speaking of nice art and stuff, Spider-Man and The Human Torch Bahia De Los Muertos! from the guys who brought you the weird Fantastic Four Isla De La Muerte! looks great, thanks to Juan Doe. They’re back in Puerto Rico but this time the Human Torch was allowed to bring his pal Spidey along.
Writer Tom Beland says, “They're, to me, the ultimate team-up. They're Butch and Sundance, and when you get the chance to put them together, you take it. You don't say 'No thank you, I'll have the Falcon, please.' No. You sit down and you demand your Torch to be served with a side of Spidey."
Eisner-nominated Jonathan Hickman’s (Nightly News) Dark Rein Fantastic Four #1 (of 5) starts this week which will give you a look at what Hickman’s FF will be like when he eventually takes over from Mark Millar. Sean Chen provides the art on this one, which can be seen in these previews.
Also starting this week is Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning’s (Nova) Secret Invasion aftermath mini-series War of Kings #1 (of 6), which promises to be a pivotal turning point in Marvel’s cosmic history. Paul Pelletier (Guardians of the Galaxy) did the art which you can see a bit of here.
You’ll probably be pleased to know that Damon Lindelof and Leinil Yu’s (Secret Invasion) Ultimate Wolverine Vs Hulk #3 is finally here! The first two issues are out of the way and as long as it doesn’t go the way of Lost, it’s time for the battle of the century. Preview!
The brilliant Brainiac story from recent Action Comics is collected in hardcover this week and they’ve creatively called it Superman Brainiac. Written by Geoff Johns with art by Gary Frank and Jon Sibal, this is the arc that set the stage for New Krypton.
Speaking of which, Superman: World of New Krypton #1 is the first part of 12 which follows New Krypton. It’s by James Robinson and Greg Rucka, out this Thursday, and will probably be sat comfortably beside the Superman Brainiac hardcover.
Lastly, the New Brighton Archeological Society from Mark Andrew Smith (Aqua Leung, The Amazing Joy Buzzards) and Matt Weldon is out – the graphic novel which found its beginning in his PopGun anthology contributions. They’re both interviewed here, and then there’s a bunch of preview pages here.
And finally, congratulations to Top Shelf’s Nate Powell on his LA Times Book Prize nomination for Swallow Me Whole, the first graphic novel since Maus to make the list.
That’s all I’ve got.
