The Gosh! Authority 25/02/09
Hello and welcome to Obama Week! That bloke’s everywhere this Thursday: New Avengers #50, Savage Dragon #145, Thunderbolts #129 and Youngblood #8. But he’s not in My Mommy Is In America And She Met Buffalo Bill which is a great-looking Obama-free graphic novel by Emile Bravo who you would have seen in MOME if nothing else.
This is the first English edition of the award-winning French book about a 5-year-old growing up in rural France in the 70s. His mother has died but his neighbours give him postcards ‘from his mother’ to keep up the pretence that she’s only away on holiday. There are several preview pages here which will give you an idea of why Bart Beatty was so keen to shake the man’s hand in Angouleme.
Hurk’s Urgent Telex isn’t as colourful nor as award-winning as the above but it is out this week and far too good for something that’s supposedly small press. He last appeared on the Gosh! Blog when his mini-comic Minder came out in October of last year. (We’ve just got some more of those, incidentally, and you’ll want one now because the new series is on the telly. Won’t you.) Anyway, here’s what Hurk says about his latest offering:
[It’s] 40 pages thick and includes my 'Glass Chops' strip that I entered for the last Observer competition along with a longer previously unpublished story and some other bits and pieces all wrapped up in a hap-hazard 2-colour screen-printed cover. Limited edition of 50 numbered copies. Instead of a full list of stats, I'll summarise by rating this comic 92 (1 being 'I made no effort' and 100 being 'this was the best comic I could have made to my ability at this time and with my limited means').
Trade-paperback Number Four of the comic Newsarama’s Jeff Marsick said is "consistently worth every cent thrown across the counter” is out now! I’m talking about Criminal, of course, one of the best comics of 2008. In Bad Night Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips give you another tale of sex, obsession, greed and insanity, all under one of the most striking covers I’ve seen in ages. Of the many reviews I could link to I choose this one. Four lines long, it ends with “if you're not reading Criminal then f*** you.”
Also out in trade paperback is Garth Ennis’ Battlefields: Night Witches. Quick, eh? If you missed it in floppy-form here’s a preview of the first issue, which begins the story of the 599th Night Bomb Regiment, all women, who fly lethal night missions over German lines in wooden biplanes. Newsarama review the trade here, which collects all three issues, a cover gallery by John Cassaday and Gary Leach (Dan Dare), plus a making-of thing with artist Russ Braun.
Another Garth Ennis offering is the Dan Dare Omnibus Volume 1 hardcover with art by Gary Erskine. Colonel Dare, the quintessentially British hero from the pages of Eagle Comic, is now retired and in self-imposed exile. The original cast are here, including Digby, Professor Peabody, The Mekon, and a bunch of baddies; all in a lovely edition featuring a complete cover gallery and a cover by Dave Gibbons.
If you were impressed by Dark Horse’s Creepy Archives you’ll probably be wanting this one too: Eerie collected for the first time ever in the very same format as its Creepy kin! Here Cousin Eerie introduces 240 pages of gruesome terror and spookiness
from the likes of Gray Morrow, Frank Frazetta, Alex Toth, Neal Adams, Joe Orlando and a bunch of others too.
Last week I forgot to point out Vigilante: City Lights, Prairie Justice when I should have. It’s a trade-paperback collecting the four-issue 1995 mini-series by James Robinson with art by the amazing Tony Salmons. Greg Saunders, better known as The Vigilante, and is off to Hollywood to star in a Western but gets sidetracked when his sidekick gets into trouble with some gangsters. It’s old West justice meets big city glamour and you should probably give it a look ‘cos it’s rather good.
And finally, given the look of astonishment on the faces of those who’ve already picked one up I thought I should mention this: Comics International has actually arrived! In this issue Joshua Dysart and Alberto Ponticelli talk about Vertigo’s Unknown Soldier, Jason Wilson discusses his controversial Smuggling Vacation, Peter Milligan on Sub-Mariner: The Depths, Jai Nitz and Phil Hester talk El Diablo, and lots of other stuff you should have read in October but is probably just as interesting now.
And that’s it for another week.

The Gosh! Authority 18/02/09
Hello! If you’ve got nothing better to do I suggest you go and get yourself a cup of tea and a biscuit then cheerily send Lewis Trondheim’s wee alien bouncing to his bloody and painful death.
It’s a fairly uneventful week but there are still a few things worth mentioning. The incredibly late second issue of Four Eyes, for instance. If you’ve come in and demanded ‘Where the deuce is Four Eyes?’ listen up:
“Here's the scoop,” says writer Joe Kelly, “Max [Fiumara] and I knew from the start that we wanted to take our time on Four eyes and really do it right. That means more than 4 weeks for Max to draw an issue, plain and simple. However, we thought we'd built in enough lead time to get the first four issues out monthly. Guess what? We were wrong. The summer cons, vacations, business trips, etc. all conspired against us, so we're a little behind. But do not fear! 2 is finished and on its way to the printer, and #3 is being drawn now...and they kick ass. Once we make it through #4, the rest of the books will be solicited on a more reliable schedule, probably bi-monthly, but certainly with the intention of hitting all our dates...no doubt, you'll let me know when we don't!”
There’s a preview over at Comicbook Resources.
Speaking of late comics, Gødland #26 was originally slated for an August ’08 release but it’s only now we see it stumble gasping through the door. Joe Casey talks about the series here which seems to be thriving in a world where a new creator-owned ongoing line doesn’t tend to survive all that long. See what awaits Commander Adam Archer on the edge of the universe this Thursday!
Andrew goes weak at the knees whenever Jason Aaron’s name is on the cover, so he’ll most likely be recommending Ghost Rider #32 on your next visit. But it’s not just Andrew who likes him – Aaron was named Best Comic Book Writer of 2008 by Wizard
Magazine for his work on Wolverine, Black Panther, Ghost Rider, Hellblazer and Scalped. So you should probably check him out if you haven’t already. Exactly a year after he began on Ghost Rider, he talks about the series on Newsarama and issue #32 hits the shelves – the final chapter in The Last Stand of the Spirits of Vengeance. There’s a preview here.
The incredibly popular creative team of Matt Fraction and Terry Dodson are doing very good things at the moment in Uncanny X-Men. This week Part 3 (of 4) of Lovelorn sees the story come to a head. There’s preview pages here.
There’s also a couple of Secret Invasion trade paperbacks worth a look. Captain Britain and the MI 13 Volume 1 by Paul Cornell and Leonard Kirk sees the Skrull Invasion hit England! There’s a preview of #1 from April last year here, which also got loads of good reviews. Then there’s Secret Invasion: Incredible Hercules by Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente with art by Rafa Sandoval in which the Greek Goliath assembles a super-team – The God Squad (nice) – to battle the Skrull gods.
And finally, Zombies That Ate the World #1 by Jerry Frissen and Guy Davis (B.P.R.D.) promises to sate your zombie cravings! It’s 2064 and the U.S. government brings in a new policy allowing the undead to dwell amongst the living because it’s easier than getting rid of them. European publisher Humanoids interviews Frissen and Davis here. Oddly, this comic was adapted into a cartoon that was subsequently scrapped. Should it have been? Have a look and then perhaps answer that chap’s question. Is it still necrophilia if they’re undead?
As promised, Eagle Award winning writer and artist Tom Humberstone’s interview with Adrian Tomine on Alex Fitch’s Panel Borders is now up.
So that’s it for this week. Small but perfectly formed.

Hello!
Hank Ketcham’s Complete Dennis the Menace Volume 5 is a lovely hardcover from Fantagraphics and my pick of the week. This instalment collects everything from 1959-60, the end of the Postwar Era. Nat’s a big fan and you may remember he wrote about the series mid-last year on this very blog. Here’s a chunk of what he had to say:
“In some ways it baffles me that these Dennis the Menace collections don’t sell nearly as well as the Peanuts equivalents. Like Peanuts the strips themselves are gently comic, rather than laugh out loud funny, although this often doesn’t prepare for the occasional really funny, dark or even borderline sinister gag that can take you quite by surprise. Like Peanuts it’s also steeped in that lovely 50s Americana that gives you that wonderful feeling you can only usually achieve by watching a live action Disney movie on a wet Bank Holiday Monday while enjoying some hot tea and toast.”
Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing is also published in hardcover for the very first time, including the never-before-reprinted #20 and the seven issues thereafter. It’s this chunk of Swamp Thing that first put Moore on the map and even if you’ve got all the trades this is worth having a look at.
Everything else is Batman this week so I’m going to link to The Count’s Batty Bat under the pretence that it’s relevant, which it isn’t. Batman RIP concluded not that long ago but it’s already out in hardcover! You may have heard Grant Morrison (Final Crisis) had Batman whacked in the final issue. It seemed to divide fans – some loved it and others were annoyed in the same way Ned Beauman was annoyed which I’m directing you to not entirely for the article but more for the amusing fight on the message board beneath it. If you’re old enough for a beard you’re too old for comics, apparently. For what it’s worth: Be warned, there be spoilers in them thar hills.
Speaking of Morrison, the last half of his and Frank Quitely’s epic, award-winning All Star Superman is out in hardcover. There’s a great review of it, along with some selected pages, over at I am NOT the Beastmaster.
But back to Batman. Neil Gaiman’s highly anticipated story Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader? begins in this weeks #686, illustrated by Andy Kubert (Marvel 1602). It promises to leave no stone unturned and concludes in Detective Comics #853 (out later this month). Gaiman sneakily put up some Kubert pencils last month and no one’s told him off yet so they’re still there. There’s also a full page of it over at Newsarama.
Nat has just told me to tell you all that Batman Confidential #26 is something you should all be excited about. He says you probably won’t be, but you should be because King Tut (from the late ‘60s TV Batman TV show) puts in an appearance. It’s the first of the three-part story arc about murders and riddles. It’s written by Christina Weir and Nunzio DeFilippis, with art by the team supreme of Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez and Kevin Nowlan. Consider yourselves excited!
After a quick and fruitless google I thought Richard Peel was perhaps the only guy on earth without a website. But Alan Moore (the mastermind behind such brilliant movies as Constantine, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Watchmen) (I kid. Or rather, Richard Peel kids.) proved me wrong on the back of his latest small press comic Captain Cape Versus Zombiac. It’s here, hiding from Google, and it’s as charmingly rubbish as I hoped it would be. Here are a few feckin’ brilliant samples of what you’re in for. You should also have a look at his blog where I found this page of Creepodrome and laughed heartily.
Last week I forgot to mention the trade-paperback Punisher: Girls in White Dresses written by crime novelist Gregg Hurwitz (The Kill Clause, The Crime Writer) with moody, darkness-drenched art by Lawrence Campbell (Punisher Special: The Hunted), which collects #61-65. Hurwitz is one of three crime writers Marvel brought in after Ennis left, the two others being Duane Swierczynski and Victor Gischler. Hurwitz, who made his debut last year with Wolverine Special: The Deathsong of Patrick Smitty and Foolkiller, says:
"My story is sort of a take on the Western tradition, with The Seven Samurai mixed in. [It's set] in an industrial town in Mexico, a lot of girls and young women are disappearing. The townsfolk feel utterly powerless, and their last-ditch effort is to pool their resources and send one guy north to find the Punisher." More here.
Lawrence Campbell popped in this morning and signed all our copies. Grab one before they're gone!
Something I did mention last week was Jersey Gods. But I’m going to do it again because Andrew keeps gushing like a fanboy. Read Jersey Gods! Everybody likes it. Even this guy who says "...if Darwyn Cooke and Jack Kirby had a baby and you’ve pretty much got Jersey Gods!"
The enormous raft-boat of a book Kramer’s Ergot Volume 7 is back in stock! We sold out almost immediately last time so I thought it was worth mentioning. Comics Reporter has an interview with Sammy Harkham, along with a complete list of creators which I’ve purloined just for you: (deep breath) Rick Altergott, Gabrielle Bell, Jonathan Bennett, Blanquet, Blex Bolex, Conrad Botes, Shary Boyle, Mat Brinkman, John Brodowski, Ivan Brunetti, C.F., Chris Cilla, Jacob Ciocci, Dan Clowes, Martin Cendreda, Joe Daly, Kim Deitch, Matt Furie, Tom Gauld, Leif Goldberg, Matt Groening, John Hankiewicz, Sammy Harkham, Eric Haven, David Heatley, Tim Hensley, Jaime Hernandez, Walt Holcombe, Kevin Huizenga, J. Tyler, Chris Ware, and Dan Zettwoch.
Speaking of Adrian Tomine, keep and eye (ear?) out for Alex Fitch’s interview with him on Resonance FM tomorrow at 5pm. There’s a repeat of it on the 15th but if you’re like me you’ll manage to miss both and just wait for the podcast (I’ll mention it here when it appears, no doubt). I also noticed that Fitch spoke to director Julien Temple about his film The Eternity Man, the true story of a man who wandered the streets of Sydney for decades writing the word ‘Eternity’ in chalk everywhere. It reminded me of the Eddie Campbell four-pager (available here courtesy of the Wayback machine) about the turn of the millenium. Sydney spunked their New Year’s fireworks budget on a bridge-sized reproduction of the chap’s chalky ‘Eternity’ and it was wonderful.
Shop news! The bookplated editions of Scott Pilgrim are now sold out, but we still have loads of copies of the regular edition which has a very shiny cover. Our sale wall is crammed full of Masterworks, Archives, Showcase and Essentials stuff so if you’ve been thinking about getting some of ‘em for a while now’s yer chance. Carpe diem and all that bollocks.
That’s me done.

The Gosh! Authority 04/02/09
You might think the snow was the best thing to happen this week. You’re wrong, of course. Batman going apesh*t was the best thing to happen this week, followed by this delightful disco mix (Beware! Sweary. More sweary than you can imagine). That’s what I think, anyway. But if you’re a Scott Pilgrim fan this is the best thing ever:
Scott Pilgrim Volume 5: Scott Pilgrim Vs The Universe is out TODAY! We’ve got our bookplated edition at the ready, featuring brand-new art by Bryan Lee O’Malley all signed by the man himself. If you’ve already put your name down for a copy you’ll be hearing from us very shortly. In the meantime, have a read of this review.
“Scott Pilgrim vs. the Universe is easily my favourite instalment of Scott Pilgrim to date; O'Malley has outdone himself again. All the fans out there who have been eagerly awaiting the new book? You won't be disappointed. It's fantastic.”
After the mad dash to secure a copy of Amazing Spider-Man #583 you might be tiring of Mr President getting his face in the funnybooks. If you’re not you should have a look at 08: A Graphic Diary Of The Campaign Trail by Michael Crowley and Dan Goldman (Shooting War) – an account of everything that happened in the lead up to the election. It’s something along the lines of Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ’72, they say. You can download a free 20-page excerpt here.
More politics in Robert Morales and Kyle Baker’s Captain America: Truth premiere hardcover which tells the controversial story of the African American men involuntarily subjected to gruesome medical experiments during WWII in order to create ‘Super Soldiers’. If you missed the 7-issue mini-series this one is definitely worth a look.
Joe Kelly’s (Deadpool) got a couple of things out this week: Bad Dog #1 with Diego Greco, a dark comedy about two misfit bounty hunters – one a werewolf the other an ex-preacher – who seem to do a lot of drinking and swearing and little of anything else. (Preview here and interview with the boys here) Then there’s Bang! Tango #1 (Of 6) with Adrian Sibar (Batgirl) starring an ex-gangster who tries to make good as a tango dancer. It could be like that Robert Duvall movie but I’m guessing it’s probably not.
Fancy some cheesecake? The first three issues of Bill Ward’s Torchy are collected in trade-paperback featuring all the gags and pin-up charm you could ask for. The strip was syndicated to army newspapers worldwide - something I’m sure comics historian Trina Robbins will tell you all about that in her introduction.
I Saw You... is an anthology of comics inspired by real-life missed connection ads by lonely hearts. Julia Wertz (The Fart Party) got loads of creators to contribute including Peter Bagge, Tom Hart, and (of course) Jeffrey Brown plus dozens more you’ve heard of and some you haven’t.
And everyone who isn’t in the above seems to be in this one: MySpace Dark Horse Presents Volume 2 in trade-paperback. Zach Whedon, Gerard Way, Steve Niles, John Arcudi, Guy Davis, Gabriel Ba, Kyle Hotz, Eric Canete and more give you the premiere of Captain Hammer, some Umbrella Academy stuff, some BPRD stuff, and some more stuff from the ongoing tales of occult detective Cal McDonald.
There’s lots of issue #1s out this week so here’s a quick what’s what: Hotwire #1 (of 5) is written and illustrated by Steve Pugh based on an original story by Warren Ellis. It’s set in the near-future when ghosts roam the streets bothering no one until a break-in at London's Maximum Security Necropolis causes an ectoplasmic catastrophe. After years of collaboration with Ellis, Pugh was keen to get this one off the ground. He says:
“It’s been an enormous project, but I’ve been determined to get [Hotwire] into print for years, and I’m actually pleased it’s taken this long, because artistically, I think I’m at the top of my game. It's only through utter arrogance and ridiculous self-belief that I could rewrite a story by one of the most famous comic writers in mainstream publication.”
Then there’s Jersey Gods #1 by Glen Brunswick and Dan McDaid, an artist given the Gosh! Seal of Approval some time ago. There’s an interview here by Comicbook Resources where the guys talk about the influence of Jack Kirby plus their all-star cover artist line-up including the likes of Mike Allred and Darwyn Cooke. Jersey Gods even has its own blog with commentary from the creators as well as sketches and things. It’s a veritable trevor trove of Stuff. Speaking of Jack Kirby, you might like our assortment of New Gods action figures including Kalibak, Big Barda, Superman, and Metron. Look!
Also starting this week is horror-western Dead Irons #1 by James Kuhoric and Jason Shawn Alexander. The artwork (which you can see in this preview) is brilliantly horrifying in the way it’s supposed to be. Newsarama reviews the first issue for you here.
The first issue of a new ongoing series The Mighty written by Peter J. Tomasi (Final Crisis: Requiem, Green Lantern Corps) and Keith Champagne (World War III) with art by Peter Snejbjerg (Starman, The Light Brigade) is another one not to be missed this Thursday. Ain’t It Cool News has an interview with Tomasi as well as a bunch of preview pages.
Expectant fans are calling Secret Warriors #1 DKR by Jonathan Hickman (The Nightly News, Pax Romana) and Brian Bendis ‘the hottest book coming out of the Secret Invasion’. And it might well be. Newsarama has a quick interview with Hickman here and Marvel have even made a podcast.
Soul Kiss #1 (Of 5) by Eisner-nominee Steven T. Seagle (American Virgin) and Marco Cinello (Spongebob Squarepants Movie, Curious George) sees a deal with the Devil go bad. This is Cinello’s comics debut and his full-colour artwork is something to behold. See some preview pages here!
And finally, I made a boo boo last week. I said something about Flash: Emergency Stop being the complete collection of Morrison/Millar Flash stuff but it ain’t. It’s only half of it. The rest will be collected in The Flash: Human Race in May. I was duly told off. Also, you should have a look at our sales wall when you’re next in because it’s packed full of Marvel Masterworks hardcovers – prices slashed! It will shock! amaze! delight! etc etc etc.
Thanks to everyone who braved the ice and came to the Adrian Tomine signing yesterday. Here’s a photo. I’ve been told it has “grainy charm” which I think is a nice way of saying it’s a bit rubbish. But we have to put a picture up because that’s what you do with blogs. And thus:
