The Gosh! Authority 26/11/08

If I were self-consumed enough to keep a diary I’d probably be writing about distracting myself from the cold by scoffing gallons of tea and hundreds of Waitrose chocolate biscuits. Thankfully, any ill-fated attempt I’ve ever made at such a thing has invariably ended by the 8th of January. James Kochalka (Monkey Vs. Robot, Superf*ckers) on the other hand has been keeping a sketchbook diary for about a decade - which I think is incredible. Ten years - and sticking them up on his website as he goes. I read his strip every day. I even read it before I check my email. Sometimes these 4-panel daily strips are about nothing at all, and then other times his neighbour’s car gets firebombed, or his wee son Eli learns the art of creative swearing (still not as good as Chris Morris, mind). And then at some point wifey has another baby and Kochalka can’t quite figure out how to draw him so a strange googly-eyed blob invades the diary for a few months. This third volume in the American Elf series collects everything from 2006-2007 in full colour, and even includes a few strips that never appeared online.

Scott Morse’s (Soulwind) hardcover graphic novel Tiger! Tiger! Tiger! also focuses on everyday moments, fatherhood, work, play and all that stuff but as the name suggests, it’s got a tiger in it. He originally wanted it to be an expansion of his Southpaw, but it soon became something else. The art – varied styles of painting and illustration - is reproduced in full-colour. It’s worth checking out for the art alone – a fan has put some sketchbook paintings up on Flickr so direct your peepers this way if you’ve not seen Morse’s work before.

The big event this week is the conclusion of Grant Morrison’s Batman RIP in #681! The internet is buzzing with theories and predictions, but Morrison’s saying nowt about the final fate of The Dark Knight. Well, except for this:

(From ComicMix)

CMix: And how does Batman R.I.P. fit into the timeline of Final Crisis?
GM: It takes place before [Final Crisis]. R.I.P. will lead into Final Crisis. Whether the Batman in Final Crisis is actually Bruce Wayne, you've got to see for yourself. It could be Nightwing, it could be Tim. Tim deserves it, you know, he chose the life and he's worked hard. Nightwing would be fun, but a very different Batman, more smart-ass.
CMix: "Crisis" tends to mean death for DC characters. Are we going to get big deaths this time around, too?
GM: I'd rather not kill characters. I like to give fates worse than death.
CMix: Worse than death?
GM: Yeah. You'll just have to see. Sorry I can't give away more.

Tony Daniel and Sandu Florea provide the art on this one and Alex Ross delivers another great cover – Preview here!

Grant Morrison’s work is known for its naughty words and violence, and so’s this next one: Body Bags by Jason Pearson (Global Frequency). When Dark Horse first published the series they promoted it as ‘the most controversial comic of the 1990s,’ and the furore raised over a voluptuous 14-yr old character proved ‘em right. Body Bags: One Shot is a one-shot (see what they did there?) that was originally slated for a 2006 release but has only just materialised now. ‘Controversial’ is a nice way of describing the series. Take this quote f’rinstance from some bloke off the internet:

“A despicable man-monster is visited by his slut of a daughter. They spend 'quality' time together stabbing and shooting despicable people. Ugly and violent, this technically well drawn and written comic is moral garbage.”

Comic Book Resources talk about the series here and include some preview pages from the new issue. And over on Newsarama Jason Pearson gets interviewed.

Another one-shot out this week is Thor: Man of War by Matt Fraction (30 Days of Night: Bloodsucker Tales) and Patrick Zircher (Cable and Deadpool), the same creative team from Thor: Ages of Thunder and Thor: Reign of Blood. See the very surly Thor throw a teenage tantrum and get sent to bed by Pa Odin! There’s a preview here and a review here by someone who liked Fraction and Zircher’s previous offerings.

Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba’s hugely successful Umbrella Academy returns for a second six-issue series - Dallas! It begins this week. The Umbrella Academy have already saved the world so what’s left to do? They can’t just sit around in their pants all day watching Trisha like the rest of us. It’s shaping up to be just as good as the last Eisner-award winning series, if not better. Have a look at some preview pages over at Newsarama.

Last bit of exciting news just in time for Christmas: Big Hairy Alan Moore and the amazing Melinda Gebbie have signed an enormous tower of Lost Girls just for you! Alan’s also scrawled his name on loads of copies of From Hell (Eddie Campbell’s in sunny Australia, but if you want the complete set find him at a convention and I’m sure he’ll draw you a pego). Nice, eh?

Don't forget that Comica is already well underway and there's stacks more to come - Art Spiegelman, Spain, Gilbert Shelton, and even a massive small press Comiket! The Comiket is free and goes from 1-7pm this weekend at the ICA, so if you like your small press you should go have a look. Paul Gravett even dances in the promotional video. Blimey.

Tonight it's Emmanuel Guibert and Ted Benoit of Alan's War at the French Institute, so if you're reading this in time head on over to hear what they've got to say.

The Gosh! Authority 19/11/08

If you’re after something weird this week you’ll have no trouble finding it here at Gosh! The first thing I’ll point at is Lagoon, a hardcover debut graphic novel from Fantagraphics by a talented young cartoonist called Lilli Carré. You might remember her from such comics as the Eisner and Harvey Award nominated Tales of Woodsman Pete (bits of which can be seen here), about a hermit slowly losing his marbles. Her latest book is quietly strange - the story of a family seduced by a mysterious shape-shifting creature’s siren song emanating from a nearby lagoon. It’s heavily influenced by Creature From the Black Lagoon and the top notch Robert Mitchum classic Night of the Hunter, and has a sort of Charles Burns oddness to it which I quite like. This bloke read it twice on his lunch break and thinks it’s phenomenal. But he seems a little nonplussed by the pizza.

Petey & Pussy by John Kerschbaum (Bizarro Comics) is another hardcover from Fantagraphics this week, which seems to be a gruesome Ren & Stimpy mix of Looney Tunes and Luis Buñuel. That is, ‘if all of the anthropomorphic animals were kvetching, balding, foul-mouthed misanthropes’, sez Fanta. I find a little misanthropy never goes astray, so I’ll be picking this one up. It’s oddly surreal, full of slapstick adventures, mundane realism, and obscenities. Comic Book Resources has a wee interview with Kerschbaum here.

Next up is Swallow Me Whole by Nate Powell, winner of the 2008 Outstanding Debut Ignatz Award which, by the way, is a brick. An actual brick. While looking for something else I was amused by this story about what happened to Tony Millionaire’s brick at a con a couple of years ago. But I digress! Swallow Me Whole is a uniquely bizarre love story exploring the shadowy corners of adolescence and mental illness, with none of the usual melodramatic baloney – there’s hallucination and insect armies instead. The illustration is incredibly delicate and well worth a look. Nate Powell was a guest blogger at Powell’s recently along with a bunch of other Top Shelf creators. See?

And if you like a bit of adolescent drama, you’ll be pleased to know that Wet Moon Volume 4 is also hitting the shelves this week. It’s packed full of the goth heartbreak and humour you’ve come to expect from the Eisner-nominated creator Ross Campbell.

Back in 1952 Don Freeman – author of the 1968 kids’ classic Corduroy - self-published a book called Skitzy: The Story of Floyd W. Skitzafroid, about a man literally divided between his life as a grumpy office worker and life as a carefree artist. He splits into two beings shortly after kissing wifey goodbye in the morning and the two halves spend the day avoiding each other. Drawn & Quarterly have published a near-facsimile hardcover version of this odd dialogue-free graphic novel, and it’s out tomorrow.

After my past experiences in grumpy offices I feel perfectly justified in segueing into Walking Dead Volume 4 in hardcover! Relationships are getting complicated in prison for the survivors, and the S is about to hit the F. Written by Robert Kirkman (Invincible, Marvel Zombies) with art by Charlie Adlard (Savage) and Cliff Rathburn (Brit), this volume collects #19-24 of the highly lauded Gosh-favourite.

Dead Space by Anthony Johnston and Ben Templesmith (Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse) is released in hardcover this week, collecting the entire 6-issue mini-series prequel to the recently released sci-fi survival horror game from EA. There’s a distant mining colony, a mysterious alien artifact causing more trouble than a drunken uncle at a party, religious fervour and insanity - which is pretty much all you need to make a highly entertaining book.

After last week’s Fables extravaganza you might have thought that was it for a while – but no! The war in Fabletown is heating up in the next trade-paperback, Fables Volume 11 War and Pieces, which sees Cinderella attempting to get her mitts on the same mysterious package the Empire’s been after. Written by Bill Willingham, with brilliant art by the lovely Mark Buckingham (Death, Sandman).

Two comics legends get collected this week: First up is Jack “King” Kirby’s The Demon Omnibus, which brings together the entire 16-issue series featuring one of his most memorable creations, Etrigan the Demon! Then Stan Lee’s Stan’s Soapbox columns from 1967-1980 are collected in one mighty trade-paperback volume! They’re presented in ‘historical context’ – I gather that’s chronological too, otherwise I know a few people who’ll be spending their Thursday evening rearranging it with a Stanley knife. Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada, Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige, X-Men movie producer Tom DeSanto and a bevy of others also write about their favourite columns.

Time for some superhero stuff methinks. Heroes Volume 2 in hardcover collects more of the hugely popular online comics based on the hit television series. Loads of top TV and comics writers have had a go, including Joe Kelly (Uncanny X-Men), Steven T. Seagle (It’s a Bird), Duncan Rouleau (Ben 10), and if the sales on the last volume are anything to go by this is going to be big.

Then there’s the JSA Kingdom Come Special Magog #1 written by Peter J. Tomasi (Black Adam: The Dark Age), with art by Fernando Pasarin, which sees recent Gog convert David Reid going to some lengths to find justice in the world. Here’s a preview.

Another big event continues in Supergirl #35 – that’s Part 5 on your New Krypton list! Written by Sterling Gates, with art by Jamal Igle (Nightwing) and Keith Champagne (Aztek), it’s also got a great cover by Alex Ross, just like the JSA Special up there. Preview.

Over in Age of Sentry #3 (of 6) by Paul Tobin and Jeff Parker (Agents of Atlas), with art by Nick Dragotta, The Sentry meets his match in the form of a trouble-making hillbilly. A preview of Marvel’s Golden Age that never was, here.

And finally, in what seems to be a regular Jason Aaron round-up, Ghost Rider #29 sees Johnny Blaze battle his brother Danny Ketch as illustrated by Tan Eng Huat (Fever)! Preview here. (Don’t forget that Aaron’s first, utterly crazed GR collection, Hell Bent and Heaven Bound, is still available.) Then Gosh-favourite Scalped #23 gives you Part 3 (of 4) of ‘The Gravel in Your Guts’ storyline, in which Young Dino Poor Bear returns to the spotlight. Lots of ultraviolence in this one, with art by R.M. Guera.

Excelsior!

The Gosh! Authority 12/11/08

‘Allo Goshlings! I hope everyone’s well and you’ve all still got your eyebrows after bonfire night.

Top spot this week goes to the best looking book on the shelf: Fables Covers By James Jean in hardcover. Jean could probably build a small garden shed with the pile of awards he’s won for his illustration work - all of them much deserved. But if you’re a Fables fan you don’t need me to tell you that. As well as the cover gallery this deluxe, oversized volume features never-before-seen sketches alongside commentary by Jean himself, and an afterword by Fables writer Bill Willingham. There probably won’t be a second volume like this since Jean’s announced his retirement from the series as of #81 so he can work on his own stuff, so it’s a one-off! You can see his Fables work to date (in fairly low-res, mind) here, and a further poke about on the internet reveals he’s even annotated the cover to the collection of covers. Thorough! If that’s your bag you’ll probably be wanting Fables #78 which is also out this week. Nudge nudge.

Next up is a book I forgot to mention last week because I’m rubbish: Hal Foster’s Prince Valiant Far From Camelot. Hal Foster can’t do much these days but Mark Schultz (Xenozoic Tales) and Gary Gianni have continued his Sunday strips about the iconic knight’s epic adventures. Three and a half years worth of strips are collected here, dating from November 21, 2004 to May 11, 2008. Here’s Gianni talking about his work, and here’s a review you might like to read.

And while we’re on the subject of knights, Peter David fans will be happy to see Sir Apropos Of Nothing #1 (of 5) on the shelves! Based on his acclaimed fantasy trilogy, this series is written by David himself and illustrated by Robin Riggs (Suicide Squad: Raise the Flag). In this first part of five, Apropos rides a horse with no name, seeks out some buried treasure and runs afoul of a dark tower that will no doubt be familiar to fans. There’s an interview with Peter David over on Newsarama, and a preview to boot.

Then there’s Sky Doll by Barbara Canepa and Alessandro Barbucci collected in hardcover for the first time in English! This internationally acclaimed bestseller is all about Noa, a life-like female android who exists only to serve the State’s needs until she attempts to escape from her evil master and all hell breaks loose. Definitely worth a look if weird sci-fi floats yer boat.

The Ted McKeever Library Volume 1 has been threatening to come out for a while (like many things) but is now actually here! This 156-page black and white hardcover collects Transit, a story nominated for an Eisner some 20 years back. It’s the first of three volumes, the subsequent books being Eddy Current and Metropol (both out at some point in the vague but imminent future) all part of McKeever’s interconnected magnum opus about ordinary people caught up in extraordinary events.
In this one, an urban rebel called Spud becomes involved in a political nightmare and needs to get out of it before the city self-destructs. As a special treat for fans, there’s not only a never-before-published final chapter to the story, but loads of unpublished art, character designs and ads!

Right! Here’s some superhero stuff for you. There’s two Batman titles of note this week, the first of which is the trade-paperback of Batman: Ego And Other Tails by Gosh-favourite Darwyn Cooke (DC: The New Frontier, The Spirit) collecting all of Cooke’s greatest Batman stories, featuring art by Cooke, Tim Sale (Batman: The Long Halloween) and Bill Wray (Hellboy). The other one to watch out for is Batman: Cacophony #1 of 3 by writer/director Kevin Smith (Green Arrow, Daredevil, Clerks). Smith’s own creation Onomatopoia returns in this miniseries event with art by Walt J. Flanagan and Sandra Hope. There’s a preview here but mind how you go – some fans have whinged there’s a villain-related spoiler.

The name How Late?! becomes more appropriate all the time - Wolverine #69 is another one that’s dawdling in this week, long overdue. This is Part 4 of 8 in Mark Millar (Wanted) and Steve McNiven’s (Civil War) post-apocalyptic epic which sees America dominated by super-villains and craggy old Logan on a cross-country journey with Hawkeye to deliver a secret package. Who knows when the next part will put in an appearance so best stretch it out by only reading a panel a day. Or something.

DC and Marvel’s 4-issue co-publishing event JLA Avengers in now in trade-paperback! Written by Kurt Busiek (Trinity, Marvels) with art by George Perez (Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds, Avengers), this collection also sports an introduction by Stan Lee and Julius Schwartz (editor of Justice League of America). Then there’s the highly anticipated JSA Kingdom Come Special: Superman, the first story fully written and illustrated by Alex Ross! This one spins off the ‘One World, Under Gog’ storyline and sees a final conflict between the Supermen of Earths 1 and 22. It’s all building up to a conclusion in Justice Society of America #22, out in January. Here’s a preview and an interview with Ross.

Another trade-paperback you should check out is Ghost Rider Volume 5: Hell Bent Heaven Bound written by another Gosh-favourite, Jason Aaron (Scalped) with art by Roland Boschi! Johnny Blaze is cursed and knows who to blame – now he’s hitting the road and out for vengeance. This one’s completely nuts and a lot of fun.

Final mention this week goes to Earth’s New Comic For Youth Gone Wild – Wasted #1. It’s a magazine-sized small press thing boasting a cover and by Frank Quitely (All Star Superman) which is also reprinted as a pull-out poster in the middle, and future issues will have work by both Simon Bisley (ABC Warriors) and Brendan McCarthy (Tharg’s Future Shocks) gracing their covers. This full-colour comic is packed full of profanities, blasphemy, and boobs by people like Alan Grant (Judge Dredd), John Wagner (A History of Violence), and Gary Erskine (Dan Dare). Head on over to their website for more information on this highly offensive release.

And last of all, Gosh! are looking for someone to work part-time on our busy Saturdays. Anyone interested should drop a CV in at the front counter.

That's about it.

The Gosh! Authority 05/11/08

As the first post of November shuffles quietly in from the cold everyone’s out flinging fireworks and burning things. Or perhaps you’re at home tucked up with your Horlicks re-reading big hairy Alan Moore’s V for Vendetta. However it finds you, I’m sure you’ll be pleased to know it’s a fairly low-key one after the last monumental delivery.

That said, there is a nice big hardcover to weigh you down – Dean Motter’s Mister X Archives all fully restored! This volume collects the entire masterpiece featuring early art by Jaime Hernandez (Love & Rockets), Dave McKean (The Graveyard Book), Ty Templeton (Batman Adventures), Paul Rivoche, and Seth (It’s a Good Life if You Don’t Weaken)! When it first appeared twenty-five years ago this film noir oddity was like nothing that had come before it and probably nothing since. It’s 384 pages long and features a foreword by Warren Ellis (Transmetropolitan).

Also in restored hardcover is Fantagraphics’ Popeye Volume 3: Let’s You And Him Fight! It’s the third of six volumes collecting all of EC Segar’s strips, this one spanning from 1932 to 1934. As well as the usual dailies and Sundays there’s a never-reprinted two-week World’s Fair sequence in which Wimpy and Popeye visit the World’s Fair in Chicago, leaving Olive Oyl behind because “she ain’t wide-minded” like wot he is.

Next up is The Sandman: Dream Hunters #1, the first of a 4-issue comics miniseries based on the multi-award winning prose novella that Neil Scary Trousers Gaiman (The Graveyard Book) wrote over a decade ago. P. Craig Russell (Sandman, Coraline graphic novel) has adapted and illustrated the story of the young monk and shape-changing fox and if you liked his work on Coraline you’re bound to want this one too. Head over to Comicbook Resources for a preview, or to The Beat if you want to see him talking about it.

Then there’s Daredevil by Frank Miller/Klaus Janson Volume 1 in trade-paperback! Miller (Sin City, 300) redefined the classic hero when he began his run in 1979, and by the time he left it in 1983 he had been cemented as one of the biggest and most influential stars in the industry. These days Hollywood starlets talk about what great pals they are with him in Wizard magazine. This is the first of three huge trades written by Miller, Bill Mantlo (Alpha Flight), Roger McKenzie (Creepy) and David Michelinie (Iron Man: Legacy of Doom), with artwork by Miller and Klaus Janson (Batman: The Dark Knight Returns).

After last week’s Hellboy: In the Chapel of Moloch one-shot, Mike Mignola fans will also be happy to know there’s a new B.P.R.D trade-paperback out! This ninth volume, the aptly sub-titled 1946, collects the arc set in the wake of WWII, in which Professor Trevor Bruttenholm unravels the mystery of the Nazi Occult Bureau’s Project, Vampir Sturm.

Then there’s the second issue of Top Ten Season Two, and if sales on the last one are anything to go by you’d better get in quick! This series of four issues by Zander Cannon and Gene Ha (both of the original Top Ten line-up) is sans the bearded one, but the reviews of the first issue have been very good. Here’s one, f’rinstance.

Joe Kelly’s (Uncanny X-Men) Four Eyes #1 also got a great big pile of good reviews, which is nice, and #2 is shaping up to be even better than the first! In this instalment, Enrico witnesses his first dragon fight and learns the truth about his father’s death. If you missed it the first time around, here’s the preview to the first issue I linked to ages ago.

Greg Rucka and Eric Trautmann present a world overrun by Darkseid’s Anti-Life Equation in this week’s Final Crisis instalment, Resist #1! The only hope for survival depends on one-time JLA mascot Snapper Carr, Mr Terrific and Checkmate. Newsarama have an interview with co-writers here and a preview too!

The end is nigh in Jeph Loeb’s (Ultimates 3) new Ultimate event series Ultimatum #1 (of 5), with art by David Finch (X-Men: Messiah Complex). Everything is climatically doomed unless the assemblage of the Ultimate U’s mightiest can do something about it. This one features the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, Spider-Man, the Ultimates, the Hulk and more all saying no to plastic bags and such.

The X-Men and Spider-Man have teamed up again in X-Men Spider-Man #1, the first of a 4-part series by Christos Gage (Thunderbolts, House of M: Avengers) and Mario Alberti (Credits). In this issue, Kraven the Hunter and the Blob attack! Preview here.

Then in Wolverine: Chop Shop, Logan’s about to wake up minus a kidney or two! He might need those. Here’s a preview of the story written by Mike Benson, with art by Roland Boschi.

You can cross off Part 3 on your New Krypton checklist after you’ve picked up the Adventure Comics Special featuring The Guardian #1. Written by James Robinson, with art by Pere Perez, this issue follows on from last month’s Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen Special #1 and reveals the true origin of the Guardian of Metropolis. Want more Superman? The new trade-paperback Superman Vs Brainiac collects all of their greatest battles as drawn by Curt Swan, Gil Kane (His Name Is...Savage), George Perez (Crisis On Infinite Earths) and more.

Gigantic #1 (of 5) examines America’s consumer-based culture when a gigantic armoured alien appears from nowhere and smashes stuff up. Written by Rick Remender (Fear Agent, The End League) and illustrated by Eric Nguyen (X-Men, Sandman) this series is packed with sci-fi thrills and superhero action and promises to make more sense than that first sentence.

Another miniseries begins with Kull #1! The first of six issues written by Arvid Nelson (Rex Mundi) adapting Robert E. Howard’s story ‘The Shadow Kingdom’ sees the recently self-crowned Kull seeking to unite the land of Valusia. Be sure to check out the cover on this one because it (along with Conan the Cimmerian #1 and Solomon Kane #1) is the first time Joe Kubert’s illustrations of Robert E. Howard’s heroes have seen print.
Preview here.

The last of the miniseries-based news is the release of Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti’s (Jonah Hex) Terra #1 (of 4)! After being shelved temporarily, the miniseries featuring art by Amanda Connor is finally being let out into the world. Here’s an interview with the guys on Newsarama.

Breaking news in comics! DC has just announced the cancellation of three titles: Robin, Nightwing and Birds of Prey. The February-shipping issues are scheduled to be the very last ones. Oh dear. Head on over to Newsarama for the full story.

And just so this post doesn’t end on a downer: If you missed out on our Gilbert Shelton signing back in September you’re in luck! We’ve got a limited bookplate edition of the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers Omnibus, with all new artwork created for the plate and signed by Shelton himself. As we’ve said in the past, this is the definitive collection of the definitive underground comic: 624 pages (including 224 in full colour) for only twenty quid. Come grab a Gosh! exclusive!

Comica 2008

It’s that time of year again, folks! Paul Gravett’s Comica is fast becoming an Autumn tradition and we couldn’t let it pass by without making sure you all knew about it. In the past, Paul’s brought us the very best in art exhibitions and talks by both UK and international creators, including Posy Simmonds (Tamara Drewe), Nick Abadzis (Laika), Kevin O’Neill (League of Extraordinary Gentlemen), Jamie Delano (Hellblazer) – and this year looks to be even bigger!

This time ‘round he’s lined up Alan Moore and Melinda Gebbie (Lost Girls), Dave McKean (The Graveyard Book), Ian Rankin, Alex Maleev (Daredevil), Ted Benoit and Emmanuel Guibert (Alan’s War), and Art Spiegelman (Maus), to name but a few. Why, there’s even a panel about Erotic Comics hosted Tim Pilcher, author of the two-volume Erotic Comics: A Graphic History!

Loads more events and information can be found on Paul’s website.

Brave the wind and rain and get yourself to some Comica events!
